We already know that smartphones are now immensely popular in Japan, but what we didn’t know was the extent. It’s been revealed today in the 2014 CESA Games White Paper that the Japanese smartphone gaming market has now hit 5.1 billion, which is more than dedicated hardware sales and software sales combined.
Japan’s mobile gaming market in 2013 was, at US$5.1 billion, bigger than the one for console (hardware and software combined) at US$4 billion.

The Smartphones are definitely doing well. How could they not be when Flappy Bird is around? It’s truly one of the more awe inspiring Smartphone games and the only one that I can confidently say that I really enjoy. Just try it. A friend showed me Flappy Bird right before it blew up and got overpopular and mainstream. It’s fun for a while. Just try it. If you don’t like it you can delete it. It’s better if you’re competing against friends.

In fact, its handhelds that inspired mobile gaming in the first place but smartphones can’t even get mobile gaming right with its standalone touch screen and motion (thank the Wii) which is only good to micro games and racing at best.

Seriously? I see them all the time. In the train and whatnot. In larger courses where the class is in an auditorium, I can usually catch people playing Flappy Bird on their laptops or phones. Why colleges decided to allow people to bring in Laptops when they know that teens will just use them for games and facebook is beyond me

This isn’t really eating into the console market. Smart phone gaming simply has a reach into a previously untapped market. I see this all the time on the subway; older ladies and business men tapping away at Candy Crush. You won’t see them buying a 3DS or console and you never would have. But they’ll buy a $1 app to make the 50 minute train ride more bearable.
However, the threat might come from the children they eventually hand those phones down to. My two daughters both have hand me down iPhones and 3DS’s. They prefer the dumb dumb games on their phones because they think it makes them look cool to their friends.

A lot more smart phones out there then home consoles. A lot of jackasses out there that will buy and play for 5mins. Impulse buying. The real reason though is the cost of games now. Gamers are being taken advantage of, with planned DLC, Dlc on disc. Sure Dlc can be legit but not usually. $69.99 for a single game plus DLC.

I have played a few but just to pass the time when there isn’t a book available. On my phone, I basically have chess, sudoku, 42, & other games of that sort. But I rarely play them, usually on the toilet or waiting an indefinite amount of time for whatever, though I’m probably reading or serfing the web. When traveling, I look @ the scenery, retreat into my mindscape, listen to the radio, &/or talk w/ my travel companion(s). Too much going on for me to game, seriously or casually (which I barely fit into @ that).
Everyone on the planet has a cell phone, not everyone on the planet has console. Pretty simple really. And frankly it’s irrelevant. A phone is not a gaming machine, Everyone on the planet could have 100 Smartphones still doesn’t mean shit about consoles.

here’s the problem, sure there’s a ton of money, but look at how many games there are, and then look at the money made per game, only a small fraction of the games are making most the money. half a billion goes to candy crush saga alone.

Smartphones and consoles are two different things!
There are literally thousands of phone makers versus the 3 major console makers. Not to mention the gazillions of phone users who’ll buy up any type of distraction that’ll hold their interest for 10 minutes and move on to looking up Selena Gomez’s/Justin Bieber’s vagina.
The social/media communication market is bigger than the niche market that the gaming industry is. Not to mention how gaming has grown to include a lot of those elements. Smartphones are like fleas, games on smart phones are quick and dirty cash grabs, the games on consoles are specific, sure there are ports but most of these ports on the smart phones suck, for now anyway.
And so…
These types of articles almost always try to spell the end of the console.
They want to be so right and take credit for something that may eventually happen in the long run. Heck, they’ve been saying this for so long now that when it does actually happen they’ll be like… OH YEA, JACKPOT! I WAS RIGHT… SEEE! SEEEE! I’M SO FUCKING RELEVANT NOW! “collapses”

Yep. & before this talk of smartphones killing dedicated devices, there was talk of PCs killing consoles (though in that case, handhelds were safe since mobile tech was still in its infancy). Actually, I’d be more worried about PCs killing consoles, especially considering PS3/4 & Xbox 360/1’s configurations (multimedia, multiplatting, x86 architecture w/ only minor customization). & then there’s Wii U, which is the closest the 8th gen has to a console, but, while still in 2nd place, the consumer’s perception of it is poor. Sure, there are many reasons for that, but one reason is that it’s too dedicated. The 6th gen was already the last gen for consoles.
Disturbing at best. Smartphones are not, in any sense, consoles or handheld. Its a tool to make long distant calls and messages to family, lonely and emo friends in a nutshell. That’s it. When it comes to “games” on mobile, its nothing more than a laughable joke, a mere carbon copy of another original game that started off on real game consoles years before cellphones were even moderately used. Its only selling well because 1. People are dumb as hell wasting a buck on POS knockoff apps bloated with microtransactions and 2. Since the games are super dirt cheap because the quality obviously blows more than all of the world’s prostitutes on dicks, people are baited to such easy luring of a low price tag hoping for an equal gaming experience on a phone that lacks hardware controls and comfortability.
I would even choose an Xbox over that crap…
