Smash Bros On Nintendo 3DS Reaches One Million Sales In Japan

Nintendo Japan has announced that Super Smash Bros on the Nintendo 3DS has reached one million sales in Japan during the first two days of the game going on sale. These figures include digital and physical sales but it’s not readily apparent if the total figures are sold to consumers or shipped. Still, it’s very impressive.

Thanks to those who sent this in.

  1. The best thing is that people think that Microsoft or Sony are doing better, when is Nintendo who sell first party games at this rate… All the money goes to Nintendo itself.

    1. And that’s why they make the most profit out of the three. Hell even their own consoles starting from NES has made a profit regardless of success or “failure” like the GameCube. Win or loss, Nintendo still makes legitimate good amount of revenues so they can continue evolving and making better content and consoles.

        1. It still made a profit if you research its sales margin history. Every Nintendo console in long term has never loss any amount of company value, not even a little. For Sony, they won some and lose some. Microsoft, well, they’re the definition of hardware revenue loss. Even Xbox 360 loss some resale margin thanks to its shitty hardware build problems and repair costs.

    2. Nintendo reported a loss while the other two are still profiting. So they may be selling well for 3DS games but certainly not Wii U console and games sales, which is hurting them. I hope they can pick things up though. I would love to see all three companies succeed.

      1. HAAAAAA! The other two are NOT profiting… Sony maybe just broke even, but MS is still deep in the hole. Sales are not equal to profit.

      2. Difference is, Nintendo can afford to lose revenue. It’s not ideal, but they are sustainable, & should be for a very long time.

Meanwhile, Sony as a whole is still in debt, & the Xbox brand has yet to make a justifiable profit in relation to the costs put in. Gaming is but a fraction of Sony & MS’ overall businesses (& only part of what their media boxes do). In order to survive, they follow the fads rather than stick to what constitutes actual gaming. Hel, Ninty still makes @ least 1 game for arcades. But Sony, for example, began following MS’ model in the 7th gen, focusing mostly on FPSes, Sandboxes, M-rated games, photorealistic visuals, more ‘interactive movies’ than actual games, & “powerful” hardware. The masses always know what’s good for them, right? It’s hard to believe Sony was responsible for PS2 & the original PS. Harder still, Sony is a Japanese company, yet they’ve bailed on their homeland instead of making an effort to show them that greatness awaits. PS3 became 360’s twin. PS4 & X1 are twins. So following others means greatness? Kinda like their teen demographics who simply follow rather than make their own decisions. Of course, even Sony & MS bow to Western 3rd parties & the financial models of mobile gaming to sell hardware @ an intentional loss; feed hardcore audiovisuals, the glut of cutscenes, bloated teams, & shareholders; all while gameplay atrophes, æsthetics fade, & gamers remain ignorant & spoonfed.

W/ so many multiplats, it’s any wonder why the hardware w/ the “best” raw specs prevails. But using off-the-shelf parts w/ little customization? They left Nintendo to make the only console & are killing consoles. Consoles are supposed to provide purer, dedicated gaming experiences, but they want to eliminate that. Since PCs started becoming more affordable, analysts have been saying for decades that consoles would die by PC, but it’s an inside job. If the PlayStation & Xbox brands still remain for the 9th gen, I’m pretty sure PS5 & the next Xbox (which might be owned by a company other than MS) will be nothing more than streaming devices. Dunno, though. One thing is for certain: 9th gen FPSes & Sandboxes will look purtier, & there’ll be even less of that gameplay. Nintendo will continue believing in gaming, new ways to play, variety, & quality; all in an affordable package. Who knows? They might fully become their own industry, providing games in all genres w/ out relying on 3rd parties who follow fads & nickle-&-diming policies.

        1. You’re such an idiot.

“Gaming is but a fraction of Sony & MS’ overall businesses”
You do know gaming is the only thing that’s keeping Sony alive?

“focusing mostly on FPSes, Sandboxes, M-rated games, photorealistic visuals, more ‘interactive movies’ than actual games, & “powerful” hardware. ”
And what’s wrong with making those games? Is there something wrong with variety in games? All those stuff you listed are things Nintendo never makes. So it’s a palate cleanser of sorts, get it?

What’s wrong with having “interactive movies”? Story is vital to gaming, and if you can appreciate a great story what’s wrong with that?

“PCs started becoming more affordable” LOL ya the $1000 gaming PCs are really evolving aren’t they? There are REASONS why people prefer consoles.

PS4 has just reached 10 million sales. It’s literally the fastest selling console in history. Playstation is FAR from dead, in fact the PS5 is probably already on the works. You criticize sony for being “mainstream”, but if it’s doing them good why not continue? Just by looking at Nintendo, people already know better than to be different and push out gimmicks. 7 million in 2 years is rubbish. If Nintendo actually TRIED to be relevant when Wii U released, maybe they wouldn’t be in the shitstorm they’re in now.

          1. “You’re such an idiot.”

You sure about that? It’s 1 thing to insult what I posted, but to insult the poster? AND right from the get-go? My first impression suggests I hit a nerve & you’re more concerned w/ judging a stranger who happens to disagrees w/ you. I’m also prone to doubt your lucidy & experience re the issues I brought up.

“You do know gaming is the only thing that’s keeping Sony alive?”

Oh, I’m well aware of the irony. The original PlayStation, PS2, & early life of the PS3 were not very lucrative for Sony, especially considering the brand’s popularity (prior to PS3) & hardware was sold @ a loss. Now their situation is reversed. But there’s the matter of ‘gaming’. The original PS & PS2 were consoles, however the PS2 did also serve as a DVD player & it could be argued that’s what helped sell it; not games, sadly, @ least initially. PS3 & especially PS4 consoles? No, they’re multimedia boxes, or in the case of the latter, a low-end PC. A console is a dedicated, customized computer. I’m not a console gamer because of expenses but experiences they provide. Again, it’s about games…

“And what’s wrong with making those games?”

It’s not a matter of genre, it’s a matter of gameplay to cutscenes. The highest ratio determines how much of a “game” they are. It’s also a matter of tastes…& understanding proper perspective.

“Is there something wrong with variety in games?”

Absolutely not. I love 2D & 3D Shmups, Rail & 3rd Person Shooters, 1st Person Adventure Shooters, 2D & 3D Platformers, 2D & 3D Adventures, turn-based RPGs, turn-based Strategy RPGs, Survival Horror, Arcade Racers, Puzzlers, & yes, the Point-&-Click genre, plus hybrids of those genres. I respect other game genres, too.

“…All those stuff you listed are things Nintendo never makes.”

Exactly. Gameplay is king. Even Eternal Darkness, for all its cutscenes & cinematic presentation, still had a good ratio of gameplay. & it wasn’t ‘M-rated’ for the sake of being “adult”, nor was it cute. AND it actually embodied the definition of ‘Mature”. Nintendo is a gaming company 1st & foremost & are about gameplay & fun.

“So it’s a palate cleanser of sorts, get it?”

By your initial statement, I’m an idiot, so…your question here is rhetorical? Contrary to popular belief, 3rd parties did support Nintendo consoles post SNES. & since SNES, my libraries for N64, GCN, Wii, & even Wii U (mostly indies there) include more 3rd party games than 1st, most happen to be exclusive, & the 1s that aren’t are probably considered niche nowadays. Most, if not all of those 3rd party games, kept the cutscenes & their lenghts @ a minimum.
But where ARE 3rd party games? The multiplats now, whether on Wii U or not, forgo gameplay in favor of cutscenes, DLC (when the main game is so light), & hardcore audiovisuals (such decadence).

“What’s wrong with having “interactive movies”? Story is vital to gaming, and if you can appreciate a great story what’s wrong with that?”

Hunh? ‘Interactive movies’ aren’t actual games. & Story is NOT vital to gaming, except for the blatant ‘avatar vs. enemies’ scenario, etc. making up the game itself. But even chess or Super Monkey Ball require zero story to propel the player to complete his/her goals. But if a story IS warranted for artistic visions & genres, it can remain in the manual (digital these days, of course), or be presented like in the Metroid Prime trilogy, or a conservative amount of cutscenes. But to overshadow gameplay & break the player’s moment means there’s an imbalance. The main aspect of a game is…GAMEplay. What does on do w/ a game? They PLAY it, beyond just having the machine “play” the disc or download.

“LOL ya the $1000 gaming PCs are really evolving aren’t they? There are REASONS why people prefer consoles.”

Really? You absolutely need über PCs to play the latest PC multiplats? Especially now when PCs are designed to be upgradable? How bleeding-edge are PC games? Is a necessary graphics cards more expensive than PS4? & since you “downgrade” to a “console”, you aren’t concerned w/ bleeding-edge anyway. Which is it? Sounds like your setting the bar too high, & your point here up to fail. How much do devs downgrade their multiplats for other platforms? You make it sound like it would be far too expensive to support consoles, or too expensive to support PCs. Which is prolly why gameplay, which is harder to program & be creative w/ suffers since it’s easier to just make pre-rendered cutscenes & short bursts of gameplay (or in the case of Sandboxes, piddling around most of the time).
Of course there are reasons people by consoles, most of which are for pure, optimized, usually exclusive experiences. Unless you don’t understand what a console is. It seems like your of the multiplat, multimedia people gen. You take the word ‘console’ for granted. I started gaming on an Atari. I’ve been a console gamer since. But the 7th & 8th gaming gens have become dominated by very different priorities. We’re both influenced by this industry, but our experiences are vastly different. I’m grateful Nintendo, a few 3rd parties, & indies have kept me in the game, but I’m definitely pissed that the larger part of the industry betrayed the hardcore gamer, not just for the casuals (which are fine to an extent), but hardcore audiovisuals (too much time & money spent), & cutscenes (I want gameplay!) I want games!

“PS4 has just reached 10 million sales. It’s literally the fastest selling console in history. Playstation is FAR from dead, in fact the PS5 is probably already on the works. You criticize sony for being “mainstream”, but if it’s doing them good why not continue?”

Again, it’s not a console. & while PS4 is far from dead, consoles seem to be dying. The naturally progression for PlayStation & Xbox would be streaming-only devices. Seems that’s what they & their audiences wants.
& w/ the amount of multiplats, or the encouragment of such, the label ‘console’ for their platforms is further obsolete. Sony & MS might as well have designed a budget PC together & cut out the proprietary software keys. Offer one concept that they & other companies can replicate for a licenseing fee. Do the ends justify the means? @ what cost? What’s next for the industry? VR? Or full-on movies?

“Just by looking at Nintendo, people already know better than to be different and push out gimmicks.”

& here I thought you wanted ‘palate cleansers’. Yet, when it comes to hardware AND software, you change your stance regarding variety? So you champion mediocrity, condemn risk, welcome the whims of the masses, multiplats, & considser “consoles” affordable PCs????? C’mon. The point is games & consoles, & I think you want something else. Fine, just stop misusing ‘games’ & ‘gamer’. You’re still gaming, but just because it has gaming elements, that doesn’t mean its a game or you an actual gamer. I’d still respect that.

“7 million in 2 years is rubbish.”

Yeah, it’s sad what the industry considers games & how much style outsells substance. C’est la vie, right?

“If Nintendo actually TRIED to be relevant when Wii U released, maybe they wouldn’t be in the shitstorm they’re in now.”

In other words, Nintendo should’ve sold out to, hopefully, a fad; made a multimedia box; completley changed or dropped their current IPs; focused soley on M-rated, audiovisually hardcore, photorealistic interactive movies, using the same basic controller from the 6th gen, & basically become something other than Nintendo.
Sorry. I’d prefer Nintendo stayed themselves & try to freshen the industry while maintaining oldschool formulas & IPs, champion gameplay, & show “gamers” what true games & consoles are. I want Nintendo to be a leader, not a follower.

            1. Ridley 2 Big 4 Smash? More Like 2 Big 4 U Wiiklings 2 Control! Leave Him 2 The Masters!

This entire comment should be a freaking article! xD

              1. Yeah… *grinning sheepishly* Sorry, ’bout that.

But I wish it were an article; would’ve taken proofreading it way more seriously, or would’ve had an editor do it. … … … … Shit…

    3. Actualy Xbox one game sales are the highest, Nintendo is in second, and even though Sony I selling the most systems, it has the lowest of games sold. “hardcore gamers” what a joke, they don’t even buy games.

          1. http://www.joystiq.com/2014/09/10/destiny-ships-500-million-highest-selling-digital-console-rele/
Activision announced this morning it has shipped over $500 million worth of MMO-shooter Destiny into “retail stores and first parties worldwide” as of day one. The number is a little messy to extrapolate because it mushes up the “shipped” dollar figure we try to avoid reporting when possible, with the nutritious digitally distributed “sold” number

                  1. Yeah, I saw that. Somewhat surprising is that the Xbox (360 or One) game sales didn’t even make the list. PlayStations seemed be be the only consoles to really draw any revenue! PC must have made up the remainder…

          2. I’m pretty sure it sold well, but they put a lot of money in game beyond 500 million it took to make it, plus the advertisement ect..

        1. And reviews coming in are pretty bad, so it looks like that $500m worth of software will sit on shelves. Thats roughly 8.3m copies that was shipped to retailers. Friends who have bought/played the game were bored with it after one night… not looking too good.

      1. Are you kidding me? the American market only sells in amount, because quality games have no chance there, generic and stinky market.

    1. Sold them? Your such a dick man. They were to be given out to friends, u lonely fuck. At the very least you could have given them to the poor bastard on here that were scrounging for hours. Sad day for ninti gamers..

  2. I think the Wii U version will sell better because it’s smash on the big screen and because kids and their graphics lol

    wtf… really sickr?
i knew i should stay away from the internet for a while :'(

    1. I’m really digging the Smash Bros 3DS demo. My favorite so far is Mega Man. I really want to see if Nintendo did online well for this round, Brawl was terrible. Overall good news though, keep up the great work Nintendo

      1. sasori deidaraobi the master puppet clown destroyer

only social rejects are buy smash bros. 1 millons sales this must be a nightmare :'(

  4. Nintendo strikes again. Everybody was wondering why they would release smash for 3ds first, well now you have your answer. Smash on 3ds should have 4-5 million copies sold before the Wii U version releases. I predict the Wii U version to sell One million in the first two days as well. Probably around or just below Mario Kart 8 numbers after a year. Who knows lifetime sales for either games.

  5. The thing I hate about this website us the community. Seems like most people here are clueless about everything and have their heads up their asses.

      1. Ridley 2 Big 4 Smash? More Like 2 Big 4 U Wiiklings 2 Control! Leave Him 2 The Masters!

xD If Nergal is a Nintendrone, I’m Bruce Lee back from the dead.

  6. There are games, game studios that can only dream to achieve one million sales number world wide in a two month life span… Nintendo is living the dream.

  7. Ridley 2 Big 4 Smash? More Like 2 Big 4 U Wiiklings 2 Control! Leave Him 2 The Masters!

This is no surprise considering Japan is full of 3DS owners & considering handhelds are kicking the asses of home consoles. Even the tragic Vita is doing well… for now.
