Bill Trinen Gets Asked About Region Locking On Nintendo Platforms

Region locking is regarded as a sore subject for many Nintendo fans as the company’s current hardware is region locked to wherever you purchased the device from. Reno Gazette Journal recently had the opportunity to speak to Bill Trinen about this particular subject and while he couldn’t say much as he’s not involved with hardware, he did say that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has acknowledged it and said they need to find solutions to address the problem.

On taking out region locking on Nintendo systems:

Unfortunately, I’m not the right person to ask about that as I’m not fully involved on the system side of things but more on the gaming side. (Nintendo CEO Satoru) Iwata commented on that recently and acknowledged that from a region locking standpoint, it was originally a solution to a number of challenges on the development and publishing side and we need to find solutions for those to address it.

On the creation of a more unified account system like PSN or Xbox Live:

I don’t have a whole lot to say on that.

    1. What we learned here is that this fine gentleman Bill Trinen is clueless on why the hell Nintendo region lock their consoles. Newsworthy stuff indeed! :p

          1. Importing and piracy have nothing in common, however, it was more that the DS was not region locked – and it’s one of the highest pirated game consoles. Since neither the system or games were locked, it enabled pirates in non-supported regions to hack the console and play every DS game free of charge. So that is why region locking exists since makes it easier for piracy to occur. Not only does Nintendo lose out on game sales, but also digital sales as the piracy extends to playing roms on their hardware as well.

  1. Iwata punish those that speak his mind regarding of some of the stupidest decision that are made at Nintendo, Bill just want to keep his job.

  2. Both these issues need to be addressed asap. They do nothing for the consumer and imo represent one of those rare lazy aspects of Nintendos business.

      1. Not in the same way as Sony or Microsoft. It is still fairly limited compared to their account systems.

The difference is you usually end up having to call Nintendo about it, sure it may be all attached to your NNID but it still is attached to the hardware as the NNID is itself. Nintendo even states in some rare situations you may not get your purchases back, which shouldn’t be an issue either. It should be as simple as logging into your account again, not even needing to call Nintendo, but it isn’t with an NNID.

It is much easier on other consoles is the point. They even allow you to use your ID on multiple consoles as long as they aren’t being used simultaneously which again Nintendo’s account system lacks. It is easy to implement, so I don’t understand why Nintnedo is taking so long to get their account system up date with the others. People always use the piracy excuse or say people would sell accounts, but Sony and Microsoft easily alleviated that problem by limiting the account to one person only and not allowing the same account to be used on multiple consoles at the same time.

Why Nintendo can’t do the same is beyond me this late in the game.
