Netflix Is Making A Legend Of Zelda TV Series

Wow, now this is a turn up for the books! The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Netflix and Nintendo are teaming up to create a live action TV series based on The Legend of Zelda franchise. The series is in its early stages but sources say it’s set to be like Game of Thrones, but for families. It’s so early in development that they haven’t got a writer on board just yet.

    1. excuse me! XD but I’d rather see an animated series. because they’d be able do more with it, this doesn’t sound big budget so if it’s live action you run into obstacles that you wouldn’t run into if it was animated. such as, bad special effects/ acting, building sets that are vast and realistic enough. and It would be easier for them to find a good voice for link and zelda than have to find a good voice and believable appearance for link and zelda, let alone ganondorf.

      1. hmmn fair point, only time will tell. with that new mario movie in the works with playstation and this zelda announcement it appears nintendo is ready to take that chance on video game movies again.

    1. That picture is how I felt. The article had me all the way it says family based. They had me at the peak when they said like game of thrones.

      1. It probably refers to production value of a fantasy series, not specifically the tone. There’s nothing on television for families, with the production value of adult tv.

      1. Even if it’s bad, like CD-i bad, it won’t be a part of the main series or damage the games in any way. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes out of it, unlike some people who wanna kill it before we even see what their concept is.

  1. If it’s not animated then am going to be pissed I don’t want a stupid live action zelda it’s just going to fuck up everything fuck you america it’s all your fault

    1. Link goes on adventures that I think are better suited for a show (which on Netflix well be more like a movie in chunks) as were I think metroid would make a better movie for theatres because her adventures tend to be in one location

  2. So is it gonna be an amazing live action like the old trailer that ign made on a zelda movie or an awesome anime like zeldamotion? Either way, I’ll take it.

  3. This is the type of thing that should’ve just came out or been announced a few months before it came out so that the overly anal super fanboys don’t have a chance to destroy it before we can even see if it’s good or not.

  4. Game of Thrones but for families? Well, some of the great things with GoT is that they can do whatever they want, kill whoever they want and show whatever they want. Take that away and you’ve got a beautiful series still, for sure, but I doubt this series will have a 80$ budget. So what are we left with? A generic fantasy series? Well, if they are putting their money and work into this I guess it can be great, but it’d require some real effort to not make it cringeworthy (like that hero of time movie) or horrible (like the cartoon. They’d have to make an established Zelda world, with some established characters, and places. The games always put gameplay first, and story comes last. If they can make a compelling story and a believable world, then I’m in.

  5. Nintendo will over-do the “family aspect” of the show, I can see it now. This whole idea of “family friendly” is an ancient belief that is disappearing from the world, especially in America. Most families today will get together to watch shows like The Walking Dead, or The Vikings. While those shows are still violent and bloody, there is rarely any sex scenes or nudity. These are the type of shows that most American families watch now-a-days. Nintendo is still in the “sesame street family friendly” section, and they need to reevaluate their fanbase, and the customer base as whole.

    1. American culture is so strange sometimes: “While those shows are still violent and bloody, there is rarely any sex scenes or nudity” -> so extreme violence is more tolerable than nudity or sex? You are a crazy folk… Never the less your point still be valid, about the risk of Nintendo over-doing the family aspect.

      1. No I agree with you, we are crazy folk……as a whole. Individually not so much. It’s mainly our media and mainstream trends that has turned most americans into hypocrits and weirdos.

There is a strange insecurity when it comes to sex and nudity in the U.S… Wanna see a hundred people blow up into nothing but bloody mist and a few chunks? Perfectly fine. A single breast shown on cable television?…Omg, nationwide hysteria, lawsuits, and womens rights activist..

But back to my point. There is nothing wrong about being family friendly. I just believe Nintendo is losing their grasp on what “family friendly” actually is, in todays time. Family friendly can be defined differently depending on what generation you choose to judge it by. Family friendly shows of the 1960’s is a whole lot different from family friendly shows of the 1980’s.

      1. Haha, if Nintendo did that, it would also be the day when they make mature versions of their 1st party titles.

  6. Like Game of Thrones? So now LOZ will have incest, beheadings, castration, nudity, burnings, f-bombs…? At least Link and Zelda can finally get it on…?

  7. So it’s so early in developement that they don’t even have a writer yet, and on a website of Nintendo fans, people only have negative things to say? Are you kidding me? This is amazing news!

Every Netflix original series I’ve put time into have all surpassed my expectations. This is a step in the right direction, let’s see where it goes. Stop all the negative BS, support your favourite company and maybe you WILL see other games get the TV show/Movie treatment that you so desire.

I for one am excited. Period.

    1. And about 90% of those game based movies are pathetic and horrible compared to the original game…

But of course you cattle masses are so easily entertained by shallow visuals and cliche story garbage like Hollywood always does…

  8. I think they might be referring to being live action and epic kinda like games of thrones but without the sex…. I hope that it turns out to be a good one as there is a lot of material to make it work, but then again they can screw it up as well… but Netflix is working closely with Nintendo to make this. Let’s just wait and see shall we?

  9. Alright, buncha inbreds. Like Game of Thrones but for families refers to production value. Since family television is dead, there’s nothing they can compare what they have in mind but to a dark fantasy adult tv series, but you idiots relate so much of GoT with tits and gore, that you probably were simply unable to appreciate, for example, the balls to the wall crazy oner setpiece of last season’s battle of the wall episode.

Also, Netflix has a great track record with their productions. This at the very least, will be decent. At its best, might be even great.

But yeah, sure. Go jerk off to Khalessi. It’s not like you’re missing the point, anyway.

  10. this will be a show that does not promote violence.

    And thats good.

I don’t watch that show or most tv shows anyway besides a few comedies.

    But this yes.

    hopefully Metroid is next.

  11. Interesting. This could be good. And it would be nice to finally have the characters of the Zelda universe actually talk. Assuming of course no body does the terrible voice acting from CDI Zelda.

    1. The legend of zelda series is my favorite, by far. Of course I’m skeptical but this can really be amazing. I’m not sure how you all can shoot this down when there is nothing to show so far. Netflix has a very good tracm record. I’m very excited for this and can’t wait to see a casting and a trailer.

      1. Yeah, the zelda series has some really good stories under it’s belt(wind waker and majora stand out to me), so theres defineitly the potential for something good here if they try to make somethign which is’nt overly cheesy and actually has effort put in. so i’m gonna keep neutral on this for the time being, it could be amazing…or it could be the worst adaptation of a game history has every known.

  12. While some have said that Zelda will be ruined, keep in mind Super Mario Bros. was pretty bad even though the cast was great. If we don’t like something we move on, but I think this has a TON of potential. I think Nathan Gamble from A DOLPHIN TALE would be the perfect Link, with Michael Ironside (Scanners/Total Recall/Starship Troupers) would make a truly great Ganon (and raise the bar on the adult aspect of the series since he’s been in many R-Rated films). They should consider making it more “gory” to appeal to teenagers (Gamble is 16 years himself). But even if they don’t go with my casting recommendations, I think it’s a fun idea and people shouldn’t be so quick to write it off. If we don’t like it, we can just go back to playing the game and forget it.

    1. Agreed; except on the Super Mario Bros movie part as I thought the movie was great for what it was. If Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit can have limbs or heads getting chopped off & still be family friendly, this Legend of Zelda series can do it too!

If there are any 2D shows on this planet they should be terminated on sight…

  13. Hmm… I am interested in how this could turn out, though I’m not feeling to confident. I still feel it would work best with animation however.
Honestly, if the make it completely seperate from the games, I’ll be okay with it. I want it to establish it’s own ground with basis from the games, but don’t make this Ocarina of Time except as a TV show. Make it it’s own thing and, with the right touch, Link might even be able to talk without ruining anything. I mean, I feel like the Zelda manga by Akira Himegawa worked a non-mute Link very well. And many people who create fanart and fanfiction have given Link a rather good personality and voice. Link can be given voice people, it just has to be done right!

      1. Actually, if this is done right with high production values it could be great, as animation that is made for TV tends to have low production values and looks crappy. Have you watched any cartoons lately? Potentially Live action could do more justice to the Zelda series as it meshes with it quite well. Give it a chance before condemning it at least; it may surprise you or it may actually suck… it’s impossible to say at this point. Are you one of those people that refuses to watch anything that’s not anime?

      2. I prefer Pixar style animations, I hate Anime or the cartoons of today, they are so incredibly ugly and horrible compared to the cartoons of before…

  14. Not sure how I feel about this…i would have been way more excited if it had have been an anime. But it will def be big budget, especially if they are calling it a “family friendly Game of Thrones”- netflix has created some of the biggest bugeted tv series ever…casting link will be a tough one. Surely he will be speaking too, and for the first time…so much to contemplate…

If it is great, this will be awesome, if not, it won’t affect the games or Nintendo… Personally, I think the world of Zelda is so rich, that there is an infinite amount of ways they can do it, so I hope they hit out of the park with excellent production values… i will give it a shot as everyone should… and if it shits the bed, let it be

  16. Family friendly?? Tell me when were Zelda games ever a family experience? The’re lonely single player games (for the most part) and that is what makes them awesome. And the Zelda franchises isn’t exactly kiddie friendly nor family friendly… The’re actually somewhat more on the mature side of things, if you know what I mean:

    http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/zelda/images/6/61/Princess_Ruto_Artwork.png/revision/latest?cb=20110424194334

Now tell me how they will pull off Ruto, Midna or the Great Fairy “family friendly style” with a real *nude* or *half nude* actress? Or all of these violent beast slaying scenes which, realistically involve *death* and which, entail some amount of *blood* on screen? How about Gorons and Zoras? Will they use high quality CGI or use actors in suits with prosthetics? If they can do it the Peter Jackson way then ok, but I fear since this is just a TV series and they won’t be able to put that much money and care into it. Peter Jackson’s Lotr and the Hobbit movies were excessively high budget movies, and it shows in the end result. Not sure it will be the case with Zelda. Enough said there.
This is a bad idea. As many have already stated, I’m afraid of the budget limitations on this project, a problem, which is typical of TV series. The Zelda universe is huge and complex, and requires the proper resources and care to be put into it. Maybe if they made it into an anime instead of a live action, then that might work out ok…

There is also an awful trend with screen adaptations of games, books or anime. All too often the end product betrays a shear lack of knowledge or concern about the “essence” of the universe. The writers chosen for those projects are often not even “real” fans of the series. As a result they don’t understand it nor do the proper homework to get to the point where they could understand it. The end product… something completely disconnected and alien to the original.

Let’s just cross our fingers that this doesn’t happen.

  18. For the love of God, give us a talking Link. If they do a crappy job, the first episode of the second season can have Link lose his voice somehow. If they don’t want to give us a talking Link, at least give us a very good, but cool, reason why he’s not talking. Maybe he could be wearing a scarf when we first see him & when he removes it at some point in the first episode, it reveals his neck has a deep scar that he suffered from either Ganondorf himself or one of his minions, preferably Ganondorf himself, that resulted in his vocal cords getting badly damaged.

Anyway, if Link has a fairy companion or something that speaks for him if they do go the mute route, I hope they do what Hook, starring Robin Williams, did with Tinkerbell for Link’s fairy.
