The New Nintendo 3DS XL Apparently Has An IPS Screen While The Standard Doesn’t

ips_3ds

If you’re from the United States then you may feel a little better about your purchase of the New Nintendo 3DS XL as this version of the console apparently sports an IPS screen. The New Nintendo 3DS doesn’t have one and its benefits are readily apparent. The IPS screen has better colour accuracy from a variety of viewing angles and displays a clearer image. This hasn’t been confirmed, but judging from various screenshots taken of both systems it does seem to be true.

    1. IPS displays are what Apple uses for iPhone displays. In other words, they are top of the line, drop dead gorgeous displays

      1. Yet go on any home theater forum and IPS displays are the devil. VA panels are preferred for their much better contrast/blacks. IPS does have more accurate color though. The old 3DS uses a TN panel, which is cheaper and has almost no advantages over IPS or VA.

Damn that picture looks fucking sexy. I just might have to pick one of those fuckers up.

    1. Well, I personally would suggest to wait for exclusives to actually come out. Right now, there barely are any games that make use of the new features of the device, such as its extra buttons, so I don’t really see a point in getting it just yet. Yes, the improved 3D is a nice feature, but is it worth replacing the old model for? In my opinion, no, it isn’t. But in the end, it all comes down to your personal preferences and priorities, of course. :)

      1. Just like PS4, stick with the PS3 until two or three exclusives you want actually release. So many multiplats and very few exclusives, that’s why hardware will never sell well on its own. If people had faith in PS4 and cared about hardware first, it would be selling like hotcakes and get a lot of support with a bunch of solid, varied, and unique titles. Glad people had faith in Wii U and its exclusives. And third parties really made an effort day one to actually create content for the Nintendo gamer and not cram twin games on it with poor effort. I’m still playing Red Steel 3 And The Conduit 3. No gamer would put up with glitches, and annual releases, or defend raw power for its own sake.

Of course, if multiplats were so popular, most people would value raw power over content in terms of hardware, and put graphics over content in terms of software. Only fanboys of the weak consoles would keep the others around in the market.

Where’s my acheivement for writing this post? It was so hard, dealt with gaming, and I want to prove I’m a gamer to online strangers. Gimme, gimme, gimme.

      2. Once you play the New 3ds, you never want to go back to the old model. It’s better in every way, not just the improved 3d. And there are benefits to owning one in existing games. Like in Majoras Mask for instance, with the New 3ds you can rotate the camera to view your surroundings from any angle. It may sound minuscule, but it’s very convenient. As opposed to just centering the camera behind Link with L.

With the new system only being a hundred bucs if you trade in your old system, I would say buy it now. Don’t wait for exclusives to come out. You don’t want to wait too long to buy Nintendo’s upgraded handhelds. Buy it now, so that you can enjoy it now. And when Nintendo’s new handheld device comes out in 2-3 years you wont feel ripped off or betrayed like some people will that wait until the end of a handhelds lifespan to purchase it.

        1. I understand that those small features are convenient, but they’re not worth $100, let alone $200, imo. Current games supporting those extra buttons aren’t completely optimized or “tailored” for the New 3DS, so they’ll work just fine with older models as well.
And do I know it’s not just the improved 3D, if there was a misunderstanding. I used that one as an example because that seems to be the “main” improvement, and the one worth mentioning the most. Things such as the faster loading times aren’t significant enough, in my view.
Also, I personally don’t like trading in or selling my consoles. I spend so much time with them, they have more than just a tangible value to me, so giving them away is pretty much out of question. But that’s just me, of course. I am very well aware that trade-in promotions are an appreciated opportunity for many. :)

          1. Well, I actually agree with you on trading in consoles. I never trade my gaming devices in. But for me the New 3ds was worth $200. I like having the newest tech available especially if it’s Nintendo related. I could understand someone who is strapped for cash waiting a while, but for someone who has the extra cash it’s a must buy.

          2. I want to add to Deep’s comment, in that the N3DS is a fuck-ton faster. I live having a FUNCTIONAL internet browser, and not waiting forever for games to boot. The processing speed for someone like me is the greatest upgrade.

The camera nub should have been another slider, but oh well. It really does make MH and M.Mask much easier to play.

If these things are not worth the upgrade to you, then yeah, wait for the exclusives.

Another expense everyone needs to keep in mind…I needed to buy a 32 gig MICRO SD card so I could do a system transfer since I download most of my games. The easiest, safest way to do a system transfer to the N3DS is to convert your old 3DS to Micro SD before doing a system transfer.

            1. I never use the 3DS’ internet browser, I find the browser of my phone/PC to be more reliable and better in overall, so that doesn’t help me. :)
About games loading faster, well, I’ve seen some videos directly comparing loading times of older 3DS models with the new ones, and honestly, the difference didn’t seem to be very significant to me. Definitely not significant enough to get me to spend 200€ (or, 160€ for the small one) on a new system.
And I absolutely agree with you on the c-“stick” though, the nub felt really weird to me when I tried it out, a second slider would have been a much better option.

But yeaa, as I’ve said in my original comment, it really just comes down to one’s personal preferences and priorities. :)

    2. If your wanting to upgrade, upgrade to the New XL. (don’t do the regular XL or non-XL New 3ds if your not in the US) From already having a New 3DS XL, the extra buttons aren’t useful enough yet, the improved 3D is pretty great but has focused away from my eyes a couple times, and the new locations of the game card and touch pen slots are hit or miss. It’s not worth it YET. Wait for a exclusive you want to come out before getting it. Also, the New 3DS’s “c-stick” nub is pretty good for camera controls when you get used to it.

  2. I was in overal very impressed with the build quality of the new 3ds xl, its just so much better than that cheap plastic a regular 3ds xl was made of. the 3D stability is crazy as well

    1. One issue the new 3ds xl has is that the plastic on one side of the game cart slot is flimsy , u can press it in and it feels so breakable. It is part of the back cover. Luckily it is not something one would touch during normal game play but still annoying to know about it.

    2. Yea my old 3ds is made of metal, don’t know what your talking about. But I agree, the new one is much better.

  3. This looks nice!!! Before the system came, out I was deciding whether I should get the normal New 3DS or New 3DS XL (assuming they were both coming to the US). I wanted the New 3DS XL because the system is bigger and I never had a XL DS system before, and I wanted the normal one because of the faceplates. So if it did or didn’t come to the US I would have been happy either way.

    1. Obinna Obbi. i cannot wait until your birthday baby. you know i love you so much and everybody at school love you too cos they know your my man.

  4. I have a 1080p IPS monitor for PC gaming and I own the New 3DS Xl and I’m glad to say this… yes, it IS an IPS screen.

  5. Isn’t that because the XL has a bigger screen and it’s stretching the resolution of the original 3DS? I mean that would make sense with it not being in the standard 3DS. Correct me if I’m wrong, someone, I didn’t know anything about IPS screens until now. Also those screen images do look good I’ll admit.

    1. Resolution or pixel density is not the subject here. It’s display quality. IPS displays offer gorgeous color reproduction and great viewing angles. An iPhone’s screen is IPS use that as an example

  6. Even though the new3ds xl is a fingerprint magnet it feels really smoth in my hands. Just love how it feels.

  7. According to Neogaf not all N3DS XL’s have an IPS screen. The XL version could also come with a TN screen. It really is a screen lottery. Hope I get lucky!

    1. I think i will start waiting for the first revision of any new gen consoles if I can hold off that long. They seem to be so much better.

  8. Interesting. I got both and I find the screen of the regular New 3DS more vivid. It’s definitely more crisp obviously because of the smaller screen size. Could also be because of that. I prefer playing on the regular one. The build quality is much better on the regular one as well.

  9. How can I feel better when the IPS display has interlacing artifacts when vertical panning occurs? It’s actually a downgrade because the distortion is fucking awful.

Also the bottom screen has light bleed and you can fucking see where 5 of the LED backlights are placed.

Fuck off with you people too blind to see these screen are absolute shit.
    Fuck off I say.

    1. Yeah, there’s talk on NeoGaf about this interlacing and dithering effect on the IPS screens. There’s also a few complaints about blacks being crushed. So IS having an IPS screen actually better?

      1. IPS panels tend to be “better” than TN panels.
Both types can be real good or real poor in quality.

Nintendo appears to not be using any type of Quality Assurance/Quality Control with these 3DS panels. (Maximum profit, ahoy!)
        Grrr!
