Smash Bros Wii U Wins ‘Excellence In Multiplayer’ In SXSW Gaming Awards

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has been voted for “Excellence in Multiplayer” in the SXSW Gaming Awards. The Wii U fighting game was up against four titles that don’t appear on Nintendo platforms: Destiny, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Titanfall and TowerFall Ascension. The Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. lets up to eight players fight simultaneously in local multiplayer.

  1. Well, that’s great for Nintendo!

Unfortunately, I’m let down by this game, AND by myself. I looked SO forward to it’s release. Then when I get it, I play it for just a little while, and then get bored. I haven’t even unlocked any characters, or played with every character yet. And I have no desire to return. I guess it’s partly due to me not really liking fighting games. I’ve never been good at Smash Bros. games, and usually always defeat my own self by falling down cliffs. I get hardly no fun out of it.

I was also HUGELY disappointed in there being no story mode, and at then taking out my favorite side-mode…..Break The Targets. The target mode it DOES have is an insult to the classic one. I wish Nintendo would make an All-Star RPG game. One similar to Earthbound, Super Mario RPG and Zelda.

    1. Zelda RPG? Are you sure that has ever been a thing? Zelda is an action/adverture game where you go in to dungeons and defeat enemies and solve puzzles, no RPG elements to be found.
Anyway, on the note of the first half of your comment, I somewhat get where your coming from. I personally don’t feel that way, but my Brother, who isn’t even O.K at Smash Bros, does feel that way. The only way I can bring him in to even looking at the game, is by doing the Palutena’s Guidance Easter Egg. He seems to enjoy that, but after 1, 3 stock round, he said he had enough and wanted to get back to playing Mario Kart 8, because Mario Kart is his favourite franchise and Mario Kart Wii is the game where he can give me a run for my money. He’s getting better at Mario Kart 8, but we only get a few hours per week to play, because he goes to work Monday-Friday…

      1. I’ve always called Zelda an RPG. And nobody until recently has ever corrected me. I always said that Earthbound was my favorite RPG, but always felt guilty because of Zelda. So if Zelda really isn’t considered an RPG, then I can stop feeling guilty for calling Earthbound my favorite RPG.
Besides, I said I wanted an All-Star RPG game that was like a mix of Earthbound, Super Mario RPG and Zelda. But whatever.

    2. I absolutely agree with you on the story mode point and (especially) the missing Break the Targets. The latter had been part of every SSB game since the first entry of the series, and it was loved by so many. The only reason why the
The single player of Smash 4 is very lacking imo,

      1. Well, pressed “post comment” too early… AGAIN, lmao.
What I was trying to say, the only reason why they removed it I can think of is because the game seems like it was rushed. The single player in general is very lacking, imo.
Sure, it’s really fun when playing online and all, but the single player has barely any substance, even unlocking characters isn’t very fun anymore, like it used to. Maybe partly because the vast majority of the roster is unlocked from the very beginning, and Nintendo spoiled every character before the game was even released. It used to be so much fun to discover the characters on your own, in my opinion. It’s sad they had to take that away, it was one of the things that made SSB so special.

        1. My Wind Waker Is Bigger (I.A.B.A.B)

Yes! Playing by yourself is so fucking dull and lacking. The online and multiplayer is what keeps smash afloat. I’m currently waiting on the online Tournaments. That will surely increase the fun when playing smash.

        2. In all honesty, no Smash game will ever beat Melee in terms of “unlockable content”.
I had way more fun putting work and effort into unlocking the characters and stages in Melee compared to the other games.
Brawl and Sm4sh were way too easy in that department (With Brawl giving you all of the characters just from playing the Story Mode, as well as Sm4sh having a ridiculously low amount of VS. Mode matches required to unlock everyone), and to have Target Test, my most favorite mode in the entire franchise get removed from those games was underwhelming. Brawl’s Target Smash doesn’t make up for it due to it lacking “uniqueness”.
Every character had their own exclusive layout in that mode from Smash 64 and Melee which made it unique, but in Brawl everyone had the EXACT same level design with horrible music added into the mix, which gave off a repetitive feeling, even if I was using a different character.
I didn’t even bother attempting the Challenges that required completing all of the levels (1-5 I believe) with every character.
Sm4sh’s Target Blast is just terrible in general compared to the other 3 games.

          1. I agree with pretty much everything you’ve said.
Melee was my personal favourite as well, even though I probably put more time into Brawl, but that’s mainly because I used to play it with friends all the time, both local and online. Melee, though, had everything, really. A super nice Target Test, great modes, a wide variety of missions and unlocking characters was actually challenging too, especially when compared to Smash 4.
I honestly liked Brawl a lot too, even though it didn’t come too close to Melee, in terms of “quality”. Yes, Target Test wasn’t nearly as good as in Melee, or even the original SSB, it still was muchhh better than Target Blast, which sucks terribly. I even liked Subspace Emissary, it was different in an enjoyable way, and just put some more substance to the singleplayer. Yes, unlocking characters in Brawl wasn’t all too difficult, but again, it was definitely better than Smash 4.
I’m just overall sorta disappointed in Smash 4, it could have been so much more if Nintendo just took some more time for it. The game had so much potential, but Nintendo kinda wasted the opportunity, imo. Yes, the WiiU was in desperate need for some must-have titles (or still is, considering there hasn’t been anything worth mentioning since Smash 4, but that’s another story), but sacrificing SSB for it? I don’t know.

    3. Smash Bros takes practice. WHy not learn the controls. It is super, duper fun when you can actually win matches.

Especially online. Me and my brother play 2 v 2’s all day every day. We’ve played over 2,000 matches together!

SSB4 has got me back into gaming. I’m not talking about gaming a little here and there, I’m saying this game is the reason I stay up late at night playing people online and has me waking up early in the morning to play.

I haven’t done that in YEARS for any videogame, but I am obsessed with SSB4. It’s fantastic! :D

      1. Really? I think SSB WIiU is dull. It almost caused me to sell the WiiU. If it wasn’t for StarFox and Zelda coming this year…

  2. A shame this game still hasn’t been getting the love that it SHOULD have gotten back when it was first released. Which I blame the 3DS version for.
I’m still actually playing it to finish completing the 140 Challenge Wall, or with my brother in 2-player online mode when we both have time.

  3. Exact same as brawl with more characters and less features if any other game did this people would complain but nintendo gets a free pass. This is the worst most uninovative game this gen and this is coming from a former pro
