Scott Moffitt: We Hear The Fans Complaints About Metroid Prime: Federation Force

One thing that fans didn’t appreciate at E3 was the announcement of Metroid Prime: Federation Force. Nintendo of America executive VP of sales and marketing Scott Moffitt says that the company is aware of the vocal fan feedback for the game. As has previously been reported, there is currently a petition to cancel the game which has received 20,000 signatures to date. Here’s what Moffitt had to say about the reaction to the game and the feedback they are taking on board.

“We love our fans. They’re the most passionate, vocal group of fans I’ve ever seen, and we listen carefully to their opinions,” Moffitt said. “We respect their opinions and their right to share those opinions with us. We try to make the best decisions we can with them in mind, but also with our content in mind, with our franchises in mind. A lot goes into the decision of which games to produce and which games not to produce. I don’t pretend to know how all those decisions are made, but we certainly appreciate our fans’ enthusiasm for the Metroid franchise. It’s a franchise I love as well, and I hope they will find other games in the 14 we’ve announced at this E3 that they can play in the meantime while we all wait for the game we’d like to come out in the Metroid franchise.”

    1. Yea, as a non-metroid player (I don’t hate the series just haven’t played it) I like FF and am looking forward to playing it. It looks like Nintendo’s version of halo.

          1. How is releasing a non-mainline game from a series hurts Nintendo? Wouldn’t throwing awawy the dev work up to this point kind of hurt them itself?

Should they consult you before releasing games in development before releasing them to make sure it is exactly wht you want? Or maybe some people appreciate that they take risks and experiment (see the success that is Splatoon that we see right now… should have been first person, and Metroid afterall!)

            1. Nintendo shouldn’t have put the word “Metroid” in the title as there won’t be any Metroid in the game at all and the name is very misleading to fans who have been enjoying that franchise since the days of the NES. The only thing that resembles “Metroid Prime” slightly is the HUD…maybe.

But to answer your original question…was Metroid Pinball fun for you? Please, don’t bother answering!

      1. And yet, Nintendo still doesn’t learn shit from their past losses so getting a game canned means a larger loss of money & time plus it’ll finally mean the message from angry fans is starting to sink into their thick ass skulls.

        1. I guess you didnt get what he said. The PC response said that they dont care and decided its best for them.to release a game like this.

Nintendo never listens to the fan base. They dont need to. Fans will buy it anyways

          1. Not according to 70,000 dislikes and 20,000+ petition signatures. That’s almost over 10% of the million fans who wouldn’t buy this game to make it adequately successful in Nintendo’s stupid ass dirt-filled eyes. Face it, this POS was doomed from the start and now Nintendo is losing shittons of fans left and right in an unstoppable freefall they just got themselves into.

            1. let me reply what Reggie said once: “7,000 signatures doesn’t mean 7,000 sales”. Everyone said the same for Devil’s third and now almost everyone wants to buy it. I swear, Sometimes the Nintendo Fanbase are the most Butthurt of all fanbases.

              1. plz don’t compare Metroid to devils third. Also I don’t see your point when u say we don’t know how for sure that Federation game will sell bad and then you say beforehand that almost everyone wants to buy devil’s 3rd?? How is it that we don’t know that Federation will sell bad but you know devils 3rd will sell good?

              2. One thing you have to learn in the business world is to respect and listen to your customers opinions, but not be bound to them. People don’t shift towards change. You’ll only know the true quality of the game when you play it.

                1. The point I believe he was trying to make is that not all of those 70,000 would’ve in that case bought the game no matter how good it looked, they just don’t like the concept. In this case, it’s 70,000, a considerable number, but I’m sure that A: some of those are going to break and buy the game anyway, and B: some of them weren’t going to buy it anyway, so their signatures mean jack shit.

    2. Agreed, there might be some people that are looking forward to this. Why should those that don’t want it and won’t buy it, ruin it for the other people.

    3. I have been playing Metroid since it was on the NES and I hope it doesn’t get cancelled as well. But either-way it looks like Nintendo is sticking by the game.

    4. At least that means we’ll finally get a REAL Metroid game that follows up Fusion and/or Metroid Prime trilogy story ark. Nobody in the fanbase asked for a fucking chibi styled soccer minigame with Metroid Prime name slapped on it as a pathetic attempt to sell itself to desperate fans. The hell with that shit Federation Force.

    5. Same here.

I like to think of Metroid Prime: Federation Force the same way as Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, where you’re playing as a set of characters different from the main assortment.

Now for the obvious remarks about how Organization XIII is infinitely better than what we’ve seen so far of the Galactic Federation.

    6. This game DESERVES to be cancelled: They need a lesson about how business work… or they’ll keep sinking until they go bankrupt… NO MORE GAMES! Is that what you want?

Nintendo stopped listening their fans for too long… don’t just take any garbage they throw at you and eat it just because you’re a “fan”.

They need to care about what the series is all about, in this case; not a dumb space soccer game with chibi Fed Troopers… it’s not Metroid.

I’m a huge Metroid fan myself, and I won’t buy this game.

      1. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

If this ends up being the future of Metroid, I’d rather it die after this game releases then to see it get fucked six ways to Sunday. With that said, I wish Sega would hurry up & kill Sonic already. At this point, if they can’t save him, they should just kill him & be done with it.

    7. Those 20 000 crybabies will buy the game anyway as long as it still releases :D There’s internet for ya!

      1. No offense, but calling people who disagree with this game “crybabies” just makes you look incredibly immature, and no, does not make you a better person ;). If anything, it makes people like you the actual “crybabies.” ;)

      2. Didn’t sign the commission for cancellation, did thumbs down the video, and will not buy it. If it turns out to be legitimately good, that’s great– those who want it will have it. But it’s not the type of game I want, particularly under the brand “Metroid.” Now, actually making and/or signing the petition would indeed make you a crybaby. But that doesn’t mean they’ll all turn around and buy it anyways. Your assumption is unnecessary, and honestly mildly offensive given that we’re not talking about politicians and political promises here. People will buy what they want; some will back down and buy it anyways, some may have already changed their minds after the “please just wait and see” requests from folks like the guy in this article and Reggie in another article I recall reading. But the contents of the trailer do raise legitimate complaints for many– no it wasn’t too short; this isn’t a story heavy game like Assassin’s Creed for which a trailer like this would focus primarily on story– and many people are likely to stick to their guns. More will back down if the reviews reflect extremely positively on the game, but that certainly doesn’t mean all. 70,000 thumbs down on the video will probably correlate to 40,000+ lost consumers on this game, or so I’m willing to predict.

  1. Does that mean that they are making a mainstream title, because he said “wait until the metroid that we want comes” out, meaning a metroid that the fans want is coming?

      1. I really do believe another Metroid game is coming. As a Metroid fan, and one who enjoys playing the Metroid series above the others, maybe even Zelda at times, I was disappointed when I saw MPFF. After watching the Nintendo TreerHouse Lives for it, however, I don’t believe it is as bad as so many are making it out to be and I can see a lot of potential for something more. Next year is Metroid’s 30th Anniversary and I do believe something else may be in the works.

    1. Heres a good video about the difference about complain and whining. One of the few Pach attack shows where he sounds wise.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlSeLhEgDJM

Anyways, theres lots of legimate complaints about MP:FF, its not the Metroid we waited for, but there sure as hell is too much fueled whining on top of that from other fanboys using MP:FF as their scapegoat to make Nintendo look bad. Im not gonna support MP:FF its not the kinda game i expected but im past the complain process, i wish others who dislike MP:FF to stop the complain/whine process too and simply just not the get the game.

  2. Nintendo should have waited on announcing MP: Federation Force. Nintendo could’ve talked about a true Metroid game, even if it wasn’t anywhere close of being ready. Then show MP: FF afterward as a bonus.

  3. Ok, i could whine, bitch about how this game aint the Metroid we all waited for, but im over that already. All i know is that im not gonna get this game, because its not the kinda Metroid i like. Let the sales and money do the speaking for Nintendo, meanwhile im gonna wait till they make real 2D Metroid or real MetroidPrime sequel.

  4. That’s the best answer I’ve heard yet. If more of the talking heads at Nintendo would just be honest about fan reaction, current realities, etc. many of us would be happier to roll with what comes our way.

He summed up my feelings rather well:

I wanted “Metroid Prime 4”, but we’re getting “Federation Force”. It’s not what I was hoping for, but it will probably be fun. We all want a proper “Metroid” game, but it’s not here yet. That’s all that really needed to be said.

I’m just glad that someone acknowledged these fact without feeling the need to then assert condescendingly that Nintendo hasn’t made any missteps at all, and that any dissent from fans can be attributed us “not understanding” what they are trying to do.

  5. My complaint with the game is not the concept; I actually like that. What I don’t like is the art style. I mean, the soldiers look like Lego figures. If they made the soldiers look how they did in Prime 3 it would be much better.

    1. Remember Windwaker? We’re you around when it was first announced for Gamecube? People hated that too, but look at it now, universally loved.

      1. Wind Waker is not a valid comparison because it is still a core Zelda game and Zelda fans weren’t left waiting 5 years for the next major installment. If anything the only difference between Wind Waker and other Zelda games is the art style. Federation Force is a cheap looking 3DS game that is only related to metroid in name only.

      2. I still hate the Cel-shading for Zelda. It’s a good game, but it’s my least favorite of the main Zelda games. And there are people who hate Wind Waker. I wouldn’t say it’s universally loved… And to be honest, it isn’t just the cel-shading for me. I thought the gameplay was very similar to Ocarina of Time, with no a whole lot of improvement. But that’s just my opinion.

      3. If, instead of Windwaker, you got the Nintendoland version of a Zelda minigame… Yeah, probably would not have been universally loved.

      1. Because it was a spin-off that came out in between Prime releases, nobody cared because when you get consistent releases it’s not a big deal even if it is a stupid name or concept, Mario and Zelda get regular spin-offs, some of which nobody cares for, but that’s because everyone knows a mainline game is coming at some point in the near future, Metroid has been on hiatus for 5 years and hasn’t had a decent game in 8, they can’t hype a new Metroid game all week leading to the reveal and then come up with a meager spin-off with a stupid concept, it’s a slap in the face to the consumers.

  6. I’m sure he knows he can’t piss off the baby brigade or he would be crucified on twitter and via petitions. Nintendo fans suck, and I’m saying that as a Nintendo fan.

    1. You’re right. Nintendo fans do suck. Especially when they come in the form of “don’t whine about what they are doing because you don’t like it.” Some people might be whining about Federation Force but some of us have a legitimate complaint. Some of you should learn the difference.

  7. The anger from fans who have been waiting 5-8 years for a Metroid Prime continuation is valid. It stings even worse that this isn’t even a game that’s being used to cushion the wait for a new Metroid; there gas been no metroid game in development at ALL except for this trashy 3DS game.

  8. thenintendoreviewer

Translation from corporate talk to plain English; they won’t cancel the game but they know how pissed traditional Metroid fans are and how badly they want a main series console Metorid game staring Samus and he too hopes it happens ASAP.

  9. LOL.
How many times can they say the same thing? They need to just write up a generic “We hear you. We’re aware of what you want. Please understand” statement and use it in every interview.

  10. How to save the Metroid franchise:
    1.-Add a casual super-easy game difficulty.
    2.-Add a marriage system.
3.-Add a dozen of anime character stereotypes.
4.-Weeaboos will flock into the Metroid franchise making huge sales.
5.-Nintendo notices and keeps releasing Metroid games, even dividing a single game in two versions to maximize sales.

Hey, it worked for Fire Emblem, it might work for Metroid too!

    1. Fire emblem always had anime like characters, but with the recent ones they just added some weeb elements to make it interesting I suppose. Nintendo must cater right?

    2. The only thing casual mode does is stop perma-death, it doesn’t change the difficulty of the game at all, had you played Awakening you would know that the difficulty setting is a completely different option and that the game is just as grindy, if not more, than the previous installments.

    3. Except Awakening is a fantastic game that keeps the spirit of Fire Emblem alive and improves the series, you’re an asshole.

    1. Don’t, buying this game will just boost their “We knew it was good, we’ll continue to ignore fans” way of thinking.

  11. This petition is, self-honestly, an act of spitefulness. It’s like saying: “If I can’t get a lollipop, then no one should get any candy at all!”, or “If my cow died of sickness, then I hope my neighbour’s dies too!”. It is an act of extreme selfishness that comes from emotions such as disappointment, hopelessness, despair and anger. And then instead of people taking responsibility for their own created emotions, they try and go blame other people to the extent where they would actually want to harm others in order to feel better about themselves. And no I don’t really care about this new Metroid game, I don’t have a 3DS, I am just pointing out the pattern of behaviour that is spiteful and so not acceptable.

People who made and signed this petition should really have a moment with themselves to think about their ways and principles. I get that they are disappointed, but to go and want to prevent others from getting a game, wow, that is some fucked up shit.

  12. So can anyone tell me if there was a petition going around when a certain pinball game was in production with a Metroid moniker plastered over the title?

    1. There wasn’t, but at least at the time we knew more real Prime was coming, and at least Pinball had the decency to look like it belonged in the Prime world unlike this Mega Blocks Soccer crap.

  13. IDK, I probably won’t buy it because I’ve never been into Metroid, I’m just making fun of the way “We hear your complaints” means “we don’t care”

  14. Fucking LOL. Anyone who signed that petition is a retard. What benefit does anyone get if they cancel the game? Just don’t play it, it’s that easy.

Honestly, it looks like a fun game. Not a Metroid game, but fun none the less. If I still think the same nearer the time I might buy it just to spite all these crybaby rivery incest fucks.

  15. Bite my shinny metal ass

Im kinda just want to buy this game cause all the dumbasses who want it cancelled. Granted i have never played metroid but if they came out with a new kid icrus game 20 years from now called super goddess paletaina (super princess peach witch i proudly own). If it looked cool and fun i would buy it. Just because of the name im not going to abandon the game becease it is associated with kid icrus. Sure i would like a true sequal to uprising but that would be my rant not cancelling a game that looks good

  16. Having a negative feedback on a game that’s set to launch is bad and seeing that there’s even a petition that’s made 20k signatures and 70k dislikes on their vid are they still thinking that game will sell well? I’m sure Nintendo knows what games will sell but chose to try to spin off Metroid of all their IPs. They should start making a real Metroid game fast if they still want to keep their older fan base.

  17. I very much like this response. As for the fan’s complaints, I’d say it’s reasonable but like the other person said, in the business world you are to respect your customer’s opinions but not be bound by them. I also question those who feel they know how business works. I went to the forum of Project Cars and boy those commentators know how business works and are greatly upset by the fan’s reaction when everything has been explained by the head of the studio. That is besides the point. My point is whether a lot of these fans who demand a real Metroid TRULY UNDERSTAND how business works.

  18. At this point, I’m starting to believe that nothing out of Nintendo’s mouth is going to convince the complainers. They’re all going to give Nintendo hate until they actually get what they believe is a “true” Metroid game, and even when FF comes out, they’ll do everything in their power to convince people not to buy it, regardless of whether the game is good or bad.

Now it’s okay to be disappointed, it’s okay to give out legitimate reasons why you’re disappointed, and most of all, it’s definitely okay to not support the game by not buying it when it comes out. Everyone has their opinion about it, after all. However, it’s not okay to be an entitled brat by trying to make these developers take all the time and effort they put into making this game and throw it all away, especially for those who are actually looking forward to the game. (Also, to those who are gonna reply with “Do you see the dislikes and signatures? NOBODY wants it!”, then you’re not helping my case at all by ignoring the comments that aren’t negative.)

The best thing I can say is to just wait for the game to come out and see how things go. I’m not saying that it’s going to be a bestseller, but I imagine that Nintendo is going to make at least a little bit of profit out of the people who are looking forward to the game and I wouldn’t be surprised if there are hypocrites that are going to buy the game anyways, despite saying that they’re not.

I’m not fully defending Nintendo on this. I mean, if it does turn out to be a bad game overall, then yeah, go ahead and say to them that it is indeed a waste of time and money, and they should just stick to just making the regular Metroid games. However, we must be mature about this and not be whining, swearing up a storm, and claim it’s the end of Nintendo as we know it just because of a game that, while I do admit has very poor timing considering the drought of Metroid games and is an example of their bad marketing, might have potential (Keyword being “Might”, by the way.). Just wait it out and we’ll see how everything will turn out.

  19. Federation Force isn’t a bad game, just a disappointment. It hurts even more that they are saying it’s another Metroid Prime game instead of a side game. The aesthetic of this game is on an entirely different spectrum to every other Metroid. Before you bring up Wind Waker, the older Legend of Zelda games were more light hearted than people realize, the series is not a dark and gritty solo experience, there are npcs regularly, and most of the plot for them is “go to dungeons to get stuff, bad guy turns into ganon, kill ganon” in metroid you are usually on a planet alone (aside from everything trying to kill you), there are exceptions, but that holds for the most part.

  20. Coming from a non-Metroid fan, they could have made it a Metroid spinoff rather than being part of the Prime series.

    1. okay so I dont usually comment on this stuff because too many of us Nintendo fans are too stubborn to listen anyway. But I feel obligated to do so this time. I will buy Federation Force. I have played every Metroid game 100%. I also love AM2R and you should search that if you want some excellent traditional Metroid. But listen, Nintendo likes to experiment, they always have (look at Zelda2 compared to well the rest, also I like Zelda2). This is an experiment and it may not be all bad. Personally I wish it still allowed players to at least play as other bounty hunters like from prime hunters. But read the other article on this site about how Samus makes an appearance. It states that players can fight the space pirates and feel the prime universe. THe hud and playstyle are very close to hunters. There will be a mission with Metroids to defeat. Also look at the article about another prime game; we probably just have to wait until the NX. But itll be great, they confirmed that it was Sylux in corruption’s ending and that we will get more traditional metroid someday. I will be waiting, but Im willing to mess around with Federation Force in the meantime. I mean I enjoyed Prime pinball and Im sure Ill have some fun here too. Just be patient and go try AM2R for some 2d metroid. Hes almost done.

      1. This! ^ I love the Metroid series the most and have managed to play all of them. I first fell in love with the games when Metroid Prime first came out. I’ve been talking about how MPFF simply looks fun and that there are several aspects of the game that are Metroid like the HUD and the creatures, including hoppers, barbs, metroids, and the space pirates, the flying space pirates, and the brutes. Everyone could see this in the TreeHouse Live segments. And we are playing as the Federation Force! This could lead to so much more like in what we saw in the beginning of Echoes and the bomb mission in Corruption. They also hint that there will be another Metroid game if you don’t already realize that they said two were coming. And why shouldn’t there be? Next year marks the 30th anniversary of Metroid. I’m sure Nintendo will do something that truly matches what we come to expect from the Metroid Prime series. Also, I never finished Zelda 2. Hell, I couldn’t get past the horse, but still I understand that it brought a lot of new elements to the Zelda franchise that are now central in every game. Also… Sylux! I have to speak out too because this game is getting so much hate. Even I was less than amused when I first saw it.

  21. We’ll see how cocky they will be when sales drop and fans leave. Slapping Metroid Prime on an eshop game and saying ‘deal with it’ is not a way to ‘love’ your fans. This is PR bullshit. I guess Ninty doesn’t quite get who we are yet.
