SEGA is one company you can count on to create a great video game soundtrack and in a recent interview with Famitsu, SEGA president Shuji Utsumi, fully acknowledged this. Mr. Utsumi said that “SEGA’s music is truly amazing” and that there are only a “few companies that possess such wonderful music.” He then said “I want to create an environment where people can more easily listen to such music” promoting SEGA’s push on digital music platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify. Here’s what Mr. Utsumi said via machine translation:

Utsumi: From a business perspective, there are few companies that possess such wonderful music. I used to be the president of Warner Music Japan, and from my experience in the music industry, I think that “Sega’s music is truly amazing.” I want to create an environment where people can more easily listen to such music, for example, on Spotify or Amazon Music. Incidentally,
Atlus is registered as a single artist on music streaming services, but on Spotify, it ranks alongside globally best-selling artists. That just goes to show how popular game music is.
There are many fans of Sega’s music all over the world, so it would be great if we could, for example, create a list of Sega songs to make them easier to listen to. Of course, we are also considering collaborations with other artists and live performances.
I believe the music artists at sega are secretly Beethovens great great great grandchildren. Even why sega puts out a bad game, the music is always fantastic. Sonic 06 is a bad game with an amazing soundtrack.
Sonic 06 maybe a bad game, but it still has some great music potential. I wonder if one of their franchises can beat off Nintendo’s franchises soundtracks.

Donkey kong 64 didn’t feel the same without him, felt more like banjo-kazooie.
Jun Senoue has been trash in my opinion, the only bad music in Sonic Superstars is from him, and the Music in Forces is hit or miss, I don’t like CrossWorld’s Soundtrack, Forces Super Sonic Music is good because they got famous vocalist and groups for those songs. I wish Crush 40 would return though I think Sega and Jun screwed over that. Modern Monkey Ball soundtrack sounds cheap, low budget, Samba De Amigo Party Central Barely has any great music, even in it’s like $100 worth of DLC. Samba De Amigo on Wii was amazing. Party Central is like “Okay team, we cant afford famous songs to be in the game.

I only know Sega’s 90’s music, which is great and is still unsurpassed even by the Sega of today. I’ve got Shinobi in my head as I type this and what has Sega done with such VGM since the 90’s? Nothing much.
If you only know Sega’s music from the 90s, then how can you compare it to music you havent listened to? I mean, I have fond memories like yourself of the sega games of old, but i havent played a lot of the modern sonic games so I couldnt really say if its better or not?
Point taken in respect to comparing. I played Sonic Mania and I know the composer got quite a bit of hype on that. It was an okay emulation of a 90’s ost, but maybe there are better examples out there from modern Sega
I think this is one time I agree with Sega’s president: I still listen to the Sonic 06 soundtrack all these later for a reason

Sonic games have had hit an miss titles; but the music has almost always been spot on!
As he said “there are only a few companies that possess such wonderful music” then I guess I’ll let him go haha. I mean Sega do have great music but you know, not quite as much as Nintendo! You really cannot argue with Persona and Sonic for their soundtracks though, so credit where credit is due.
Persona is ATLUS, Sega deserves no credit for the quality of it’s soundtracks.
