Shovel Knight Is Officially Coming To Retail

One of the hits of last year was Shovel Knight which was praised by both players and critics alike. The game managed to receive an average Metascore of 91 which is an extremely impressive feat for an old school designed platformer. And yes, before you ask, there will be a retail version for both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions. If you’d like to play on another platform then you can also purchase it for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. The game is coming North America on October 13th and to Europe on October 16th. Here’s what it contained in the box.

The physical version of Shovel Knight contains everything we’ve released so far. First, there is the original Shovel Knight campaign with all the content you know and love! Also included is Shovel Knight’s first content update: Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows. Finally, there’s a full-featured Challenge mode with more than 50 crazy challenge levels to explore!

Of course, like the digital version, every boxed version will also receive FREE future updates as they become available:

  • Specter Knight’s Campaign – A full campaign starring the shadowy scythe spinner!
  • King Knight’s Campaign – A crazy campaign with the gilded goob himself!
  • Battle Mode – Duel with up to 4 players as your favorite heroic or villainous knight! (Wii U/PS4/XB1/PC exclusive)
  • Body Swap Mode – Did you ever wish Shovel Knight was a lady, or Shield Knight was a dude? Well, now you’ll be able to change them all around, along with the rest of the cast!

Oh, and one more thing: every boxed copy of Shovel Knight will include a lavish instruction booklet similar to the Kickstarter reward. No 2-page inserts here! You deserve a full manual, to hold in your hot little shaking hands and pore over as you wait to get home!

    1. Hell yeah it is. These guys deserve every penny they make on this spactacular piece of gaming art.

Goddamn this game is what reminds me why I love gaming.

      1. The game was a undeniable masterpiece. This game, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, and Super Mario 3D World really kept me gaming this generation

    1. Well, I already bought it, but that won’t stop me from buying a retail version.
I HATE losing digital data because of a console failure.

  1. YES! Now I can finally get a chance to play this! Has it been said if the “extra content” is going to be on the disc/card or is it going to be included on a voucher? I would hope if they are doing such a nice real version of the game they would include everything thus far released for it on one complete copy.

Also, I plan to get it for Wii U at first, but does anyone know if the PS4 version will have the secret Kratos boss and the One version have the secret BattleToads boss? As much as I despise the One, that does seem to me to be the best version of the game.

Now we just need Retro City Rampage (among a shit ton of others) to get a physical release.

  2. Also, when it says “Of course, like the digital version, every boxed version will also receive FREE future updates as they become available:” and then lists all the content below it, is that going to be content included with the game or is it content that has not been released yet?

    1. The content hasn’t been released yet. It was a stretch goal during the kickstarter, and they promised they would work on it and give it out for free after they finish the initial game.

  3. This is great news. I didn’t even know this was coming out.

Been meaning to pick this up and now will get this. Already got Mighty No.9 ordered and looking to get Bloodstained on my WiiU too.

    1. Lol. Nintendo fans getting excited over cross platform indie games because they have nothing to look forward to.

      1. Space Pirate Initiate

So? The same can be said for Sony & Microsoft fans as well because their 1st party games aren’t coming until next year.

  4. Glad to see they’re also listening to the community with some of those updates. Battle mode sounds great, too bad for me it’s only local.

  5. As a kickstarter backer of this, I can tell you that all the DLC is free and most of it has not been released yet. Plague of Shadows is NOT out yet and that will be the first of the big updates.

  6. This is awesome! Can’t wait to pick Shovel Knight, Mighty No .9, and Bloodstained in physical form! :D Wish they’d do more often!

  7. I’m kinda bummed about this because I already have it on my 3DS digitally. But I really want a physical copy… Now I have to think really hard about buying it again…

    1. Honestly, now that there is finally a physical version of this game coming out on a Nintendo console, I am all for him being in Smash if they want him in that badly (though I still think there is a FUUUUUUCK ton of others that should have higher priority). Hell if anything Shovel Knight now has a leg up on Dillion’s assist and a bunch of other trophies/music already in the game.

  8. Whew……I’m so relieved, now I can just erase the downloaded version and preserve more space on my hard drive and just buy the retail version which comes with the Plague Of Shadows DLC but the game is so great that it deserves to bought to be twice. Thanks Yacht Club 😉

  10. I’m definitely buying this when it releases for my 3ds. Never played it ND now I can enjoy it finally. Wonder wt the price is going to be

  11. Daaaaaaamn. It almost seems worth it to buy a copy for 3DS. It’s already on my system downloaded, but the game is so good.
