In the Donkey Kong Online Open 2015 on Thursday, arcade gamer Wes Copeland registered a score of 1,170,500 in the arcade version of Donkey Kong. If this score was submitted and certified, he would have beaten the all-time highest score which has been held by Robert Lakemen for the last year.
Unfortunately for Wes, Robert Lakemen noticed his competition and tried out 6 hours later, exceeding that score again with an impressive 1,172,100 points. Robert’s score is still awaiting verification, but once certified he will have held his position firmly at the top spot for a little while longer – or, at least until they meet again at the Twin Galaxies Festival to battle it out one more time.
Wes Copeland did not walk away empty-handed, as he also became the first gamer to score 1.1 million on his first man. Twin Galaxies, the player achievement archive, acknowledged his skill and said “He was able to sacrifice his three extra men on the final barrel screen, essentially making this a near perfect game.”
You can see part 1 and part 2 of Copeland’s game in his Twitch stream archive.
This reminds me when a Super Mario Sunshine category speedrun had a new WR by a notable SMS runner, and then the other got it back within a few hours.
