Zelda Wii U Will Be Only Playable Nintendo Game At E3 2016

Nintendo changes its approach to the show every year. This June, Nintendo will focus its attentions on the upcoming game in The Legend of Zelda series. The Wii U version of the game will be playable for the first time on the E3 show floor, and it will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion. Additional information about Nintendo’s E3 plans will be announced in the future.

  1. … what?

Well, then again, this year’s E3 doesn’t look like it’s going to be successful, which a number of publishers either dropping out entirely or having a limited appearance. Once at least one of the big three make that kind of move, you KNOW something’s up.

      1. What do you mean? I mean that if Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft (considered as the “big three”) pull something like this, then the others usually (*usually*) follow. None of them seem to like the ESA.

      2. Let’s not write him off just yet. I mean, he did pick up where Iwata left off because of his untimely death. No disrespect to Iwata because he was a nice, fun guy but Kimishima does have a pretty big mess to clean up. :/

  2. …I’m seriously concerned for them now. Is this really the only big franchise they are banking on? Good lord…

  3. Well, here’s a not so secret “secret” for you: E3 hasn’t been “big” for years. Publishers and devs seem to prefer Gamescom and Tokyo Game show for a few reasons from having longer time to make demo builds to more devs and pubs attending those shows (When you’re based in Europe or Asian territories, flying a ton of stuff and people to L.A. every year isn’t cheap!).

Nintendo showing one game (and a Zelda game at that) means they’re confident that attendees will be all over it like a cheap suit. With that the sole game to cover, good journalists will be trying to outdo each other to be first. But I’m betting the best articles will pop up later on. I’d say the play time on the floor will be limited to maybe a half hour because of lines. But we shall see if the big gun sites get longer time off the floor.

    1. It’s still the biggest event from a consumer standpoint, though. Not to mention, it has the advantage of being the first big event of the year, and at a time when not much is being released. If you want your products to have coverage, you show them at E3.

      1. Not really, if you know people in the industry and what they think about E3 as opposed to the other shows noted. “Consumers” (who can’t get in anyway) follow it because it’s been hyped as a huge show and YES, a lot of news drops and for many, it is. But given that Nintendo has been using Directs to lay out their messaging for a few years and there was that debacle of an E3 a wile back that split the format into multiple locations (some spread way to far apart to the point that it was impossible to make meetings!), the show has become less and less of a big deal.

        1. That’s my point. The hype is at E3, it’s what people watch live. More importantly, a lot of people that watch the whole thing wouldn’t watch the more-or-less-randomly scheduled Nintendo Directs due to a lack of interest. You create that interest by appearing in whatever people think it’s hot, no matter if it’s E3, TGS, Gamescom or whatever.

The point is, if they want to turn the eyes of the general consumers to their products (especially in the West), they need to make an appearance here. It’s not like the events are mutually exclusive, they can still appear and even hold some announcements for the other two, but leaving E3 in the dust, especially when it’s at its weakest is ridiculous.

          1. Except for the fact that Nintendo Directs for E3 aren’t “randomly” scheduled. They’ve let consumers know in advance the dates and times to the point of putting up a page on their site to spread the news even more. Also, Sony, Microsoft, EA and other pubs have had off-site events before or during E3 using similar means of communication directly to gamers.

E3’s weakness is the fault of the organizers, not the companies who want to get the word out using more than the show floor.

You may want to scan these articles (as much as the site will allow, as it’s industry only):

            http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2016-03-04-no-e3-booths-for-disney-wargaming

The post below offers up a beacon of hope while showing the huge flaws with E3 in its current form:

            http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2016-01-29-eas-absence-from-e3-is-not-a-death-knell

Granted, the show is changing or trying to change to fit the oddball gaming scene these days. But overall attendance has been down and publishers are less likely to want to show up at an event hall with dwindling numbers every year. Thing is, PAX, Indiecade and the big comic and sci-fi conventions have been doing better for devs and pubs because they can get the games to the gamers and not just the media. If you had tickets to a show like PAX , would you rather go PLAY a game in person and draw your own conclusions or read about someone playing it and get an opinion you might not agree with?

Amusingly enough, as I run a small site I see a lot of this first hand. What happens after E3? Well, almost everyone comes to NYC and shows off the same games (sometimes with updated demos because they have a few weeks more to work on them). That works best for me because in a smaller venue you’re usually not limited to 15-20 minutes of play in a too-loud and distraction-packed show floor.

            1. Except they pretty much are if you don’t follow Nintendo news. They announce them in advance alright, with two days in between announcement and streaming. Compare that to events such as E3, which are scheduled roughly at the same dates every year.

Sony and Microsoft are inconsequential to this conversation for two reasons: they don’t have to support their consoles by themselves and, more importantly, they still show games at E3. As I said, this is not a “one-or-the-other” kind of situation.

Other than that, I think we’re speaking on different terms here. I’m not questioning the claims you posted, or the devs position about E3, or how other events allow for more direct contact with the games themselves. What I’m saying is E3 reaches more people overall. I’m not talking about the press or show floors, I’m talking about people watching the reveal from their own home. Unless the other events have surpassed E3 in number of viewers, I don’t see how they can be a more effective marketing tool no matter what devs say about it, sorry.

That said, I haven’t opened the links you posted because I’m on my phone right now, so I might redact my statement later on

              1. I’m scared this is more about Nintendo just not giving a rat’s ass about the United States more than it is about E3’s declining relevance. :/ I mean, what else do we have in America that is big & mainly focuses on video games other than E3? I can’t really think of anything because Tokyo Game Show is in Japan & Gamescom is in Germany.

          2. I agree with mr nintendo there, e3 still is sort of a huge thing to the people who still go there and for people who can’t and watch it on tv. To us, the more gamers (I hate saying hardcore because its ridiculous), we thinks its useless because of those other gaming spots and nintendo directs. However, the big wigs do still go to show off. Who knows maybe nintendo has more to offer then what the media says. e3 is still big to me, and for good reason…its the only real way to have early access to games then having left overs are the other gaming sites…what I mean by that is e3 is the first place you get to try cool new games and see new consoles like the nx which I hear from nintendo now is gonna happen. Think man, e3 is still number one in electronics.

    2. Its a huge show, both for media and consumers. There’s a reason Sony is debuting PS VR are there, and why Bethesda is coming back again this year. Xbox announced backwards compatibility last year. Arguably, the biggest news still tends to originate there

  5. It’s starting to become clear that Kimishima will be slowly turning Nintendo towards the mobile route. Only 1 console game at the biggest gaming event of the year, and it’s not even a new game, it’s a game they announced back in early 2013. Everyone thought they would reveal the NX during E3, yet they still won’t reveal it. This is absurd.

Meanwhile, they confirmed 2 new mobile games: a Fire Emblem mobile game and an Animal Crossing mobile game. That’s 2 new mobile games VS 1 console game.

The future is looking grim. My excitement, my hopes & dreams for the NX have just turned into nothingness. Is the NX just going to be a more powerful Wii U that also plays mobile games? I’m very worried now. This is still going to be an interesting E3, but not quite in the way that I anticipated. We need a miracle.

-||Amusing how everyone in here assumes that just because they mention one game so far that will be present at E3, that this automatically means that there won’t be anything more||-

  7. Seeing as there is currently absolutely nothing going on with wii u until next March, there better be a ton of details on this game. It was announced in 2013 for crying out loud. They better cover this thing like the media did 9/11.

On that note, I have a terrible feeling that this game is gonna be disappointing.

        1. I play any console with games i like to play in the wide variety of genres i like to play and nintendo of course has the least in all categories but have something i like to play

          1. So then what your telling me that you are playing others that also have nearly the same number of games? Pretty pathetic. In other words your comment is rubble. Quit trying to badtalking nintendo all the dam time, or you might end up like that other guy.

            1. No you fuckin idiot let me repeat I PLAY ANY SYSTEM THAT HAS GAMES I LIKE TO PLAY in several genres and no past nintendo handhelds mainly have a huge variety of games most likely in all of the genres i play and of course sony now i dont know about microsoft but when i get the older systems i can compare but im sure sony has more then anyone else and so obviously the more games in the genresi like to play most likely the more i will lean towards a company or companies now since shitendo has the least in the genres and have a much weaker console and are behind in many other things yes they are the worst so read the entire comment you fucking retard if you can do that

              1. Thats still pretty dam piss poor pathetic dumb fuck. If you only play games you like and yet still badtalking nintendo, why you still here if its shit to you? Your the dam idiot for coming back just to try and piss off good people. If your leaning to them, then go to them, quit wasting time on a site or company you no longer care for. Bye Felicia.

  8. People you misunderstand this. Zelda is the only Nintendo game that is playable, NOT the only game that is shown. We will have a regular Nintendo Direct like last year.

    1. A dumbfuck, obviously. Unless they are flat out lying… like they’ve done countless times before this gen. Because the reason Zelda U is the only game they are showing at E3 for Wii U is because IT’S ALL THEY FUCKING HAVE TO SHOW OFF FOR THE DEAD PIECE OF TRASH CONSOLE!!! *cough* Sorry. It’s been a tough couple of months. @.@

        1. I’ll believe it when I see it. I sadly don’t trust their words anymore. Not that it matters since I give up on Wii U since they clearly seem to have done so.

  9. So no other NX games that this one at launch, and they were so hung up on having launch games thus the december to march delay… Wii U ports won’thold Nintendo. Heck the Zelda game is wii u and ported to NX…
