Nintendo will transform its booth at the E3 video game trade show next month in Los Angeles to immerse fans in the world of the newest game in The Legend of Zelda franchise – playable for the first time ever at the show. To ensure attendees are able to truly experience the freedom of exploration the game offers, The Legend of Zelda for Wii U will be Nintendo’s focus of the show this year, and will be the only playable game in Nintendo’s booth via extended demos.
“At E3 this year, we’re treating people to an immersive Zelda experience,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “By giving attendees extended hands-on time with this remarkable game, they’ll be able to get a much deeper understanding of something new for the franchise.”
Nintendo’s kickoff to the E3 show happens at 9 a.m. PT Tuesday, June 14, when Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime introduces Nintendo Treehouse: Live, which will be dedicated to a day of live-streamed gameplay of The Legend of Zelda. This will be the world’s first in-depth look at the game, which will also include commentaries by Nintendo developers. The Legend of Zelda gameplay will be streamed from the E3 show floor via Nintendo’s channels on YouTube and Twitch, as well as on http://e3.nintendo.com. The stream will include game coverage, behind-the-scenes info and plenty of fun.
Series Producer Eiji Aonuma has said that this new installment in The Legend of Zelda franchise will be a clean break from the conventions of previous games, removing boundaries that forced players to follow a set path and introducing new gameplay that has not been experienced in previous games in the series.
While people everywhere will be able to watch The Legend of Zelda gameplay online, one lucky fan and a companion will be flown to Los Angeles to enjoy the action in person and be among the first to play the game on the show floor. Between now and May 10, Nintendo is offering a sweepstakes on Twitter for a chance to win a trip for two to E3 to play the game. Anyone who tweets @NintendoAmerica a note about what The Legend of Zelda series means to them while using the hashtags #MyZeldaLegend and #NintendoSweepstakes will be entered for a chance to win. Fans can share messages about their favorite games, characters or memories of the franchise. Nintendo will select a winner at random. The prize package includes airfare for two, a hotel stay, tickets to E3, a $500 prepaid VISA debit card. For all the details about the sweepstakes, visit http://e3.nintendo.com/#section-sweepstakes.

If you all would be so kind as to not enter so that I may win I would be grateful.
I can’t even ‘cuz it’s open to US/Canada citizens only or something. Siiiigh.
With a release, 9 months after E3, the ball is certainly being dropped on that holiday Zelda release in my opinion. Sure, it gets lumped up with other things even outside of gaming, but it just seems so far and now two E3’s removed from the original Zelda gameplay footage we all saw. It wouldn’t be so bad if there were a bunch of Nintendo games filling the void, but as we know, that is not the case.
Maybe not anything filling the void for you but beside the 4 games I still need to finish beating, there is still Tokyo Mirage Session#FE, Mighty No 9, and Yooka Laylee left for me to play on the Nintendo home console side of games for me to play.
Im also confused with this risky move that Nintendo is taking.
I think People would be a lot less worried about this news if Nintedo announced the date of their next direct :/ If this is all were getting for a while, then I’m not really feeling it tbh
Right, but even still, a direct isn’t a game. And I guess you mean a direct would announce other games, perhaps ones we don’t know about, but even if they are rebooting their overall approach and that means a drought in Wii U games, it still is stinky-poopoo-kaka
they need to go all out on that booth. so are they not going to do a nintendo championship this year D: ?
that would be a shame.
Am I the only one that never enters these Twitter contests?
Besides, anything involving traveling (especially on a plane) I’d never do anyway.
And finally, why on god’s earth do they call number symbols (or pound symbols) “hashtags”? I hate that word. It always makes me think of hashbrowns.
They’re called octothorpes. I think I know where the term ‘hashtag’ came from. ‘Hash’ sounds like ‘hatch’ and cross-hatching is a method of shading that looks a bit like ‘#’. And the ‘tag’ part is obvious. I still hate the term, but I have to choose between not sounding like a nerd or not sounding like the lowest common denominator.
This made me laugh. My co-worker and I found out a couple months ago they were called octothorpes. Later on I called it a pound sign and he was like “Hey. C’mon, octothorpe. Let’s call it what it is huh?
poundtag?
So… no Direct?
Curious about this as well.
Sounds like it. The Treehouse streaming seems to be placed in the Digital Event’s slot. Unless they stream it the week before E3, I’m guessing Zelda is all we’re getting. No new games, no Mother 3, no trailers, nothing.
Oh well. E3 2016 will be about what others are doing for me. I will watch very little of the streaming the same way I did for xenoblade x.
Same here on both accounts. I bet lots of people are going to only watch a part of it so as to go in as blind as possible. Besides that, hopefully Sony will give me a reason to get a PS4 Neo.
One entire day of streaming? Well… of course I’m happy about it but they will spoil half the game this way… mmhhh…
By the time the game finally releases next year, most people will feel like they already owned and played the game just from all the footage and info that will be revealed from E3, clear until the release date. That’s what happened with Smash Bros. for Wii U. When I bought it, it didn’t even excite me because I saw SO much footage of it before it released. Never got tired of a game faster. But I KNOW I’ll still love Zelda.
I’ve been waiting so long to see anything on this game that I want to watch everything they give us. I don’t want to wait 10 more months to get an in-depth look at the game, but you make a good point. I’m gonna have to restrain myself.
I don’t think I will watch the Nintendo e3 this year. I don’t want to have the entire game or most of the game spoiled for me. I wish they would go and only focus on Zelda for e3. It just seems really backwards to only focus on one game and only one game for all of e3. More people will honestly flock to sony and microsoft this year, simply because they offer more. Nintendo, I’ve watched all of their e3’s up to this point each year and enjoyed them, while sony and microsoft I just kind of watched the highlights. Nintendo, I’m not sure why you’re making this decision, but it’s one that makes little sense. e3 should be about getting people hyped about the NX, showing it off, showing zelda off, showing off new games for the 3ds and the nx (and any wii u games left to show off). E3 is about showing off what you have and giving people things to look forward to. By only giving us one game, you basically take that spirit away. I was excited when I first saw the teaser of the new zelda game, but now, with all the delays and lack of info, I’m not nearly as excited, simply because of how tight lipped they’ve been. I honestly like the directions developers have been going when talking about in development games, because it’s connecting more with the players, and helps make the wait more bearable.
Two things people keep misunderstanding about what Nintendo said.
“Zelda will be the only Playable game presented by Nintendo”.
1. There will still be Other games MENTIONED at E3, and SEEN at the show, likely still getting booth space, but just in video, ‘Sizzle Reel” forms, and not “playable”. I seem to recall mentions of new, unannounced titles coming to 3DS this year.
2. “…Presented by Nintendo.” Though some major Developers have backed out of E3, the show will not just be Nintendo alone. Any 3rd party developers with their own booth space (either on the show floor or “Near By”. A growing trend), whom have 3DS or WiiU games in development will still be able to show off their own goods in Playable or Unplayable forms as they see fit. (Just nothing for NX until Nintendo officially drops the Curtain later this year)
So in other words…. Just Zelda
Also … while the “Treehouse Live” event is said to be All about Zelda … whether they have said it yet or not, it is a safe bet that there WILL be a separate “Nintendo Direct” that will be shown just before, during or shortly after the E3 show, which will show off upcoming things like Paper Mario, #FE, any other announced games not out yet by then, and likely mentions of the yet unannounced titles slated for 2016 release that have been hinted at (I would not expect any bombshells on those though. Probably just things in the league of Project STEAM, Dillon, etc.).
This makes a lot more sense now, in fact I’d call this a wise decision by Nintendo
Keep in mind that we should analyze this from a more reasonable standpoint than just going “WTF NINTENDO OMG #NINTENDODOOOOOOMED”
To me this seems like Nintendo not trusting E3 anymore. People get way too hyped and raise their expectations far above god level and honestly, I am guilty of this myself. I was far too hyped for this E3 and I believe this decision will end up in me, and probably you too, enjoying the NX reveal more.
Look at last year’s E3 digital event. Was it bad? No, not really, if it had been a normal nintendo direct it would have been pretty decent, despite the insulting Federation Force and Amiibo Festival.
But for E3? That was the problem. The event was way too lackluster for E3 and is exactly why people didn’t like it, “it didn’t meet E3’s expectations”.
Another big risk might be the possible “overshadowing” from the other companies.
And while I’m sure that the NX would make for an excellent E3, Nintendo doesn’t want to take ANY risks. They don’t want to risk people becoming overhyped, instead they prefer to surprise them with an exciting reveal that they have full control on. It might have less people there, but let’s be honest:
· If you’re a hardcore gamer, you’re going to hear about the NX anyways
· If you’re a casual gamer, you probably won’t watch E3 anyways
For me all this means is that “my E3” has been delayed by a few months and will avoid overhyping.
While I was panicking at first, I see this as a wise decision. And I don’t say this as a fanboy, personally I could care less about that, I’m just trying to give sense to this.
Nintendo is dumb, yes, but they’re not dumb enough to set themselves on fire. Let’s just stay optimistc or our skepticism will be what will kill the NX. Do you want to kill the NX?
Exactly. Nintendo is dealing with a lot of shit atm, and they don’t have much games in development anyways, so there’s nothing much to show or do at E3.
I agree with what you said. But my problem isn’t the NX reveal. It’s the lack of games and Zelda delayed another 18 months. There is nothing wise about Nintendos approach to those problems.
I know it’s tough, but I think it’s better than wasting the NX’s games on the Wii U. If they wasted the resources they’re putting on the NX on the Wii U they’d be hurting the NX. Remember what Emily Rogers said (she even warned us subtly about this delay by saying that “we shouldn’t get overhyped for this E3”), the NX’s first year might be better than the Wii U’s lifetime, and that’s exactly what the console needs
Well yea, your right. It is better to put them on NX and not waste them on the Wii U. But does that necessarily make Nintendo wise for doing that? Nintendo put themselves in this situation by not listening to what the people wanted. They tried to give consumers something “they didn’t know they wanted” with the Wii U and it backfired. Nintendo has always gone to the beat of thier own drum, and that’s one of the reason I like them so much. But sometimes they need to listen to the people who actually buy thier products. Nintendos ignorance and pride has put them into a situation where they will have a holiday season with no software or hardware to sale. Maybe they are making smart moves at the end of the Wii U’s life, but they sure didn’t make them at the start. I’m not sure if that qualifies as wisdom.
Something had to be compromised:
· Either they put all of their effort on the NX, deserting the Wii U
– Results: The NX has a fantastic launch, but at the cost of a lackluster year for the Wii U
· Or they split the efforts between NX and Wii U, ending up with a half-efforted NX
– Results: The Wii U has a great year, but the NX doesn’t launch as strong as it could have
People already hate the Wii U (and have faith in the NX) so having games on the Wii U is completely futile. Why throw a game on the Wii U to see it die while you could save it up for the NX, which could flourish under a new hope? I don’t think this is pride, I feel like this is them fully admitting that the Wii U was a mistake, an utter failure. It’s good that they’re looking beyond their pride and trying to make something good that they can be genuinely be proud of.
This is actually good news for me, because I wanted to go into the game completely blind. If there’s no genuine full trailers for us then it means that I can really get into this blindly. Hope I can avoid spoilers though.
That’s a good way to think about it. It’s almost impossible to go into a game blindly with the internet integrated with everything. I don’t think I ever blindly played a game since renting a GameCube or N64 at Blockbuster at least 13 years ago >_<
Not impossible. I went into Dark Souls 3 completely blind. I even avoided the trailer. It was an amazing experience playing it this way. A game is much more fun to play when you don’t know what happens next. Having this DS3 experience is gonna make spoiling Zelda so much more sour. I’m really gonna do my best to avoid footage, but I know how Nintendo loves to put 70% of thier games on video for everyone to see. They did it with Mario Kart, SM3DW, and Smash. I’m certain they are going to do it with Zelda as well.
Yep, can’t wait for the main mechanics and worlds to be spoiled in their thumbnails and titles
only downside with that is those speed runners will bloody get it so don’t waste your time guys be patient for it to release over here
The Wii U sort of ended with Xenoblade Chronicles X, for me… I’m not too interested in whats left. Thought the NX would be discussed at least this year but not yet. Wait till next year. Which is fine I have such a backlog.
This website…is kinda creeping me out…http://e3.nintendo.com
I want to trust Nintendo, but holy crap this makes me nervous :/

Wow, They are gonna ride Zelda’s dic* so much this E3, it might be considered rape…
ZELDA’S A MAN??!!
we had Metroid prime federation present last year and the game is not even released yet and god know how animal crossing. To be honest Nintendo should look at how to port some 3 DS games on the Wii U (pokemon I looking at you)
For Zelda Wii U having to occupy such a large space are there any chances of it being introduced with VR technology?
I feel like this E3 will be great…. For the people attending it. For the other 99.9% of Nintendo fans its not going to be a very “immersive experience”. A new Zelda is great. Seeing it at E3 is great. Not being able to play it for another 18 months (face it people, it’s not releasing in March) and no Nintendo games for the rest of the year is devastating beyond words.
If the NX is coming in March, so is Zelda. Unless Nintendo is THAT stupid, which I don’t believe them to be. I think the March release date was removed because they want to announce it during their stream.
But hey, who knows with this game. 18 months seems like a big stretch but I’m not counting on anything anymore. This generation of gaming has been… unreliable.
RIP: Any hype for this E3.
Nintendo must have been smoking drugs while drunk when they decided to do this. Seriously, just Zelda 2017 and no Direct/Digital Event?
i took a look into fine print and am just wondering: why on earth math skill test question is required for Canadian residents? anyone could clear this out for me? :)
Lol what? Maybe Japan is trying to size Canada up.
