Japan: Metroid Prime: Federation Force Only Sold 4,286 Copies In Its First Week

Sales data from Famitsu has come in. It says that Metroid Prime: Federation Force sold 4,286 copies in Japan in its first week. It means that it charted at number 20 in the weekly sales ranking. According to NeoGAF, not only is this slightly less than 10% of the opening week of Metroid: Other M, but it’s an “unbelievable low” for Metroid standards in Japan.

    1. I know you laughing about the game but have you seen how Metroid games sell in Japan? Metroid is not a Japan loving series since Super Metroid.

      2. Read the last sentence of the article. Apparently it’s still “‘unbelievable low’ for Metroid standards in Japan.”

        1. I can see it already. Instead of sales numbers, they give us shipment numbers instead which will be in the millions to hide the fact it’s only been selling a couple thousand at most. Or they’ll do the more tried & true method of giving us a percentage instead of actual numbers. xD

  1. I feel bad for everyone who worked on the game, especially the director. They put hard work into the creation of Federation Force, only to have it be ridiculed by everyone else because it was just a spin-off after years of waiting for a new game in the series. Maybe they should have taken the approach the Zelda team did with Breath of the Wild: wait until a new mainline Metroid title was announced, then release Federation Force in the time between the announcement and the released of said title. I have a feeling everyone would have been satisfied if that were the case.

      1. What is going to be released on the NX?
Surely you don’t mean a Metroid game, because not only is that not confirmed nor even hinted at, but last time we thought that was the case, we got a donkey Kong game.

Metroid is a valuable IP, even if it doesn’t make tons of money. Fed force has sent the message. Now with any luck they will start development on a real Metroid game and we’ll see it in 4-5 years. X. X

    1. If they had waited for a main series Metroid, I garentee the level of disgust would have been a fraction of what it was. Instead they gave it to Metroid fans like, here’s some bread scraps you mangy fans, now eat it and like it!

It makes me happy that people didn’t just bitch, but took action with their wallets. That is how you send a corporation bent on making money a message. Don’t give them money.

    2. I feel bad for them, too. I feel bad that Nintendo gave them a game that would do nothing but get them hated on. At the same time, they should have researched Other M to see why that game failed. If anything is too drastically different from past entries, the game is doomed to fail. Like making Samus too human or using an artstyle that is, for all intents & purpose, anti-Metroid.

Since they didn’t, they deserve some of the hate for this game.

      1. I think they did look into it, but not hard enough. What most players hated was the story and Samus’s portrayal. I don’t remember where I read it, but I saw somewhere that Sakamoto said he was puzzled by why it failed and he stated “I have no idea why fans were upset about Other M. I wrote the story, so I know it can’t be that.”

All I know is, if this was a true event, and he really refuses to acknowledge that “maaaaaybe I fucked up,” then he is the last person I want involved in anything Metroid ever again.

      2. I don’t feel bad for Nintendo one tiny bit. They have done jack shit for their original fans. And now They tried to give the Metroid franchise to their new casual fans, we’ll guess what? Metroid still belongs to the Old School gamers bitches! ;D

        1. I’m not feeling bad for Nintendo but Next Level Games. Now if it truly was Next Level Games’ idea to use the chibi artstyle, fuck those bastards & they can go to hell. Good luck surviving after this abomination!

    3. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

      ||Speak for yourself civilian, this abomination will never be anything but a disease in my 3 eyes even if we had gotten the best Metroid ever and I don’t care about these scientists and their misguided ways either…||

      1. True but least the game before Triforce Heroes was a good game (Link Between Worlds) that was also widely liked, unlike the game that preceded Metroid Prime: Fed………

    4. It doesn’t look like a lot of “Hard work” to me, rather the easiest way to pull off a mobile FPS. Still, someone was just doing what they were told. I imagine most of the developers won’t be overly proud to have this on their resume. The new Black Sheep of the Metroid Family.

  2. This game would have sold much better if it sold alongside or sometime after a main-series Metroid game or a Netroid Prime game.
Hopefully Nintendo doesn’t look at the sales of this game and determine that Metroid just isn’t worth it anymore.

      1. I’m going to piggyback on your comment with this.

      2. Yes, I was mainly speaking in terms of in the west. I believe that the game could have sold a vast amount more copies when compared to what actually happened, if they played it smart. By this, I mean, maybe reveal a real metroid game, and sell this to tide fans over until that game comes out. Or, wait until the main game releases, and release this game as a basic spinoff to give just a little more. I really don’t understand why Nintendo didn’t see the error here with this game. Nobody was asking for a Metroid spinoff. They’ve been craving a real, main series metroid platformer or a Prime 4. I’m not saying people would ever ask for the spinoff, but at least they wouldn’t be spiteful about it and would maybe give it a go. I don’t know, this is just my take on the matter. I can’t really say all too much because I really do not enjoy Metroid games all to much, save for Prime Hunters’ multiplayer.

        1. People call it a spinoff… Idk about that. It’s just a shit cash-grab game.
Take star wars. Did they release Rogue One first? Or is Rogue One coming out AFTER and right before primary installments of the franchise.

You can’t launch a fucking spin-off when there hasn’t been a primary installment for… Shit, how long has it been since Other M? Or Prime 3?

Nintendo wanted to cash in on the Monster Hunter craze. It failed.

    1. nintendo has released spin offs and side sequel before the main game so this is no different, take pokemon for instance, has release a few side games (and a remake) before sun and moon. releasing them along side main games doesn’t always work. i did play the demo and my impression was better than what i originally thought, and that thought was that it looks dumb and boring, it is kinda dumb and it was a bit fun, i may get it when it goes for a bargain price (which varies who thinks its a bargain) of $10, maybe $15.

      1. What I mean, is that if people know a big game from the main series is coming, they will be more positive and possibly buy the spinoff. However, if fans of a series are not shown that a main game in the series is coming, after a long wait, and near a 30 year anniversary of their franchise, you can kind of expect people to NOT want the spinoff title, mainly out of spite whether it is good, meh, or terrible.

        1. I would have gotten this spin off… if it was on Wii U & wasn’t using the chibi artstyle. They can do it with Zelda all they want since the franchise doesn’t have an established artstyle. But Metroid does have one: realistic graphics with realistic proportions. That’s like making a new Halo game after 6-10 years of the franchise being absent & giving people sprites instead of the graphics/artstyle that past games had.

          1. Funny thing is, after the original Halo trilogy ended, they hired the METROID PRIME art director to do all of the new Halo trilogy’s art. It is not bad art, but does not fit the franchise’s original beautiful art direction.
Too bad that guy didn’t work on this game. The art style (mainly speaking about the chibis) is very “meh.”

      1. It does, however, sell semi-decently to decently here in the States, where the series is most popular. Sure, we don’t have sales numbers for us yet, but they can’t be much better given how vocal we have been about our extreme disapproval.

        1. Yes, your extreme disapproval of a game for being different.

This is why I have no respect for Metroid fans. Most self-entitled fanbase I’ve ever seen, even more so than Sonic fans.

          1. Lol honestly my advice to ya is not to take metroid fans to seriously. Once you start doing that, you’ll notice that their a relatively small and harmless group who aren’t use to much to begin with. Metroid is commonly made like mario, zelda, pokemon etc…so they constantly always crave for new metroid games.

That being said i understand why they’re upset and feel the need to vent and bash FF….i mean they got every right to do so. However can’t say i feel bad for them honestly, they only got themselves to blame for expecting and setting expectations to high for a new metroid game. You would think despite metroid being a outstanding IP the fans would realize it’s current standing to nintendo.

            1. “Relatively small and harmless group” ah, so you’re referring to the folks who bought federation force.

We’ll, now we know who two of those 4,000 are. This guy and Greg above him. Maybe we’ll meet a few more. The odds are slim since there are so few sheep that don’t believe in consumers defending a brand they enjoy.

I’m sure they don’t care about anything. Just spoon feed them oatmeal and call it ice cream and they are good.

              1. Nope talking about metroid fans as a whole, i never even played FF to begin with but i don’t care about it enough to hate on it continuously i pretty much moved on from it.

I just have a different way of think compared to the rest of you ninty fans. I stand by what i said, since i never expected a mainline metroid game i never got angry about FF. Do i want a new metroid game? yes however am i expecting a new game? well no not necessarily. My expectations for nintendo is dramatically low as you see…i barely even come or comment on nintendo related sites. I rather be surprised then to expected and be disappointed.

Good attempt with insulting me though metroid fans still be funny as ever a year later.

          2. We don’t hate it because it’s different- if you’ve paid ANY attention to what we’ve been saying, we hate it because of its horrible execution. The art style is unfit for a serious franchise like Metroid and their reasoning for its use is miserable, the game comes 5 years after the last game which was also disliked because its story and character portrayal sucked, and it just doesn’t look good general (we KNOW the 3DS is capable of better graphics than that).

Imagine, for a moment, if the last big Zelda game was awful and generated controversy like Other M. Then, after 6 years of no Zelda at all, we are shown not a new mainline game, but Link’s Village Builder, where you all you do is design and build a village that serves Link in his quest to vanquish Ganon- you don’t play as Link nor do you get to see his exploits, you just manage your village like a Sim City clone.

Surely now you get why we’re angry, because the above hypothetical situation is what happened in Metroid’s case.

            1. This happened to me as a Kirby fan when it’d been YEARS since a Kirby console game (like 10 years or something due to Sakurai leaving) since K64 and his amazing masterpiece, Kirby Super Star. Than year later they finally announce a Kirby game and it’s Epic Yarn. I’m personally not a big fan of Epic Yarn but it’s a competent side scroller and critics liked the look of the game. However a long time Kirby fan, it’s the action platforming that makes the franchise stand out for me and Kirby’s movesets and varied powers were gone. I was disappointed but than Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe, and the spectacular Planet Robobot came out so maybe there could still be hope for Metroid? I dunno, at this point. Big difference between Kirby and Metroid is that Kirby has a dedicated separate studio that just does Kirby games and can handle gameplay changes with way more clever ideas and competence.

            2. Careful. Greg Warner might think that would be a great Zelda game to come out 6 years or so after a bad entry in the Zelda franchise. Hell! I have to admit, though. It sounds like a great game to release for mobile devices during this period when we got a great new Zelda game well on it’s way for us to enjoy! Maybe even a bit of a nice tide over til BotW! xD

  3. Really they should have just stopped development when they saw the horrible reactions from fans after the reveal trailer however long ago that was. They could have just as easily gotten the message/story across in a super hype trailer for Metroid Prime 4 for Wii U/NX whatever. Nintendo should have known better than to not listen to their fans. But once they get an idea in them, they won’t let up until they know exactly how it affected them.

    1. Or at least changed the artstyle. That excuse they used for it was just that: an excuse. Hunters didn’t have any issues with being a small screen. Kid Icarus Uprising didn’t have any issues with being a small screen. Nor did those indie shooter games with realistic graphics have issues with being a small screen on 3DS.

  4. Like everybody is saying, this game is failing because we haven’t seen a true Metroid game in years,so its kind of insulting to release a spin-off like this after all this time.Mario and Zelda have spin-offs all the time but they never get that kind of hate.Personally I’m not interested in the game because I’m not a shooter guy,I love Metroid for the exploration, not for shooting shopting space pirate and I don’t care about the story of Metroid so playing as the fedaration is not interesting

      1. As tre said, it’s only Japan’s sales. Let’s wait & see the sales of other regions before we go making this claim. When we finally get those & they are just as abysmal as Japan’s, I’ll gladly agree with your comment. Til then, let’s continue hoping that the sales are just as bad everywhere else.

  5. Welp… looks like Metroid is dead as dead can get. After this I doubt we will ever see this franchise ever again, hell if there truly was a real Metroid game in the works during or after MP FF was being created Nintendo probably scrapped that would be future Metroid project right after this failure, unless the sales in the west are really good. If the sales in the west more than make up for the poor sales in Japan Nintendo will probably cater more to the west with how Metroid NX gameplay is with a true Prime sequel, and even release it in the west before Japan, or maybe never even release it in Japan at all after this. This is just my theory on the situation though.

  6. Ive said this from day one! Nintendo needs more mature/ adult mascots instead of these cute cuddly little chubby mechs running around.
In the beginning they did the unthinkable & paid platinum games to make an exclusive BEYONETTA. A huge step in the right direction. I’ll even add ZOMBI*U also. This sleeper hit should’ve received more exposure & advertising from Nintendo. What a cool mascot to have: A FLESH EATING ZOMBIE. & they should’ve followed it up with a sequel, but, they didn’t do NOTHING with this brilliant title.
Admittedly I love what they’ve done with SPLATOON. Ink boy & Ink girl are just the badasses Nintendo needed. But still they are in need of more characters that will appeal to an older crowd.
They can still do their cutesy little creatures but add some mature mascots as well. Cause last time I checked kids are more into GTA, C.O.D., Gears of War & Battlefield.
Meaning their audience of kids come first is like from 4 to 6 years.
Sorry…but the 7 year olds aren’t into Mario like we used to be in the 80’s & 90’s.

  7. What sucks about this is that the executives and number crunchers at Nintendo will look at this and say, “well, I guess this means all our fans don’t care about the Metroid franchise At All any more. Cut all funding to all other Metroid projects in the works”.

… completely oblivious to the fact that Other M and Federation Force were simply ‘disappointing’ games, and another Flop with the Metroid logo on it only INCREASES passion and desire for a GOOD Metroid game for fans in the WEST.

Either a REAL “Metroid Prime 4” (even though most of the original dev team members have scattered) or a proper, sidecrolling Metroid 5 (picking up the story after Metroid Fusion) would be ENTHUSIASTICALLY Welcomed by Western Nintendo Fans like ourselves in Europe and North America.

    1. Metroid will be fine as long as Nintendo doesn’t act like babies & blame us for the game flopping. When it was still in production & we voiced our dislike of the artstyle, they should have made Next Level Games go back to the drawing board instead of trying to shove something many of us didn’t want down our throats with the purpose of “showing us why we should like it.” Fuck that. That’s like a restaurant telling someone they’ll show them why they should like eating dog & proceeding to shove it down the customer’s throat against their will. We wouldn’t support a food place doing that to one of their customers so why should we give Nintendo a pass for doing roughly the same thing?

    2. If they didn’t want to change the artstyle of FedshitForce, they should have immediately got to work on a new, true Metroid game & told us they were working on a true Metroid game. If they had done one of those two things, the hate for this game wouldn’t have been nearly as bad.

  8. Coming in 2020, A project that’s been in development since the wii’s lifespan faded for the NX We are happy to announce the latest in the Metriod franchise which is now called Prime Force Heroes where you play as the avatars from the underated federation force title on the 3ds but for those wanting a the chance to play as Samus and not a federation force soldier for monthly transations of 29.99 you can purchase parts of the armour or mine for the materials you sell on the space market to earm the metal to craft it. But , the armoury is on a timer and there will be micro transactions for extra time

Look forward to Prime Force Heroes

  9. well it’s a 3DS game and for me that enough to wish the game bad sell. I want more home console games, no 3DS games. Also please somone remind me did I dream that game was announced in June 2015 during the E3 or it was later than that. Cause after 1 year geezz, they just released it now?????!!!! Damn they took they time with that one….

What I am damn curious is how Nintendo take feedback. I mean nobody during an interview with a developer just say something along those lines: “listen mate, your game was shit because……”

Also on the fan side people moan about a game behind the same (i.e FIFA,call of duty and so on) and when there is something different, they moan as well so it’s kind of lose lose situation here.
