SEGA Says It Realises Its Focus On Quality Was Lost During Wii Era

MCV has released an interesting interview with SEGA Europe boss Jurgen Post who admitted to the publication that the company lost focus on quality during the Wii era. However, Post acknowledges that that market has gone and today you need to create high quality titles that have a long shelf life.

“We were a little bit opportunistic, signing a lot of titles and doing things that were not necessarily very good. There was a time when you could sell a lot of products, for example on Wii, but that market has gone. Today if you want to survive, you need to focus on quality. We want to create games that are very good and have a long tail.”

  1. Well, for it being lost during the Wii era, they sure came out with a dang good Sonic game during that time, being Sonic Colors. Sure, a lot of their other franchises were just crap, but Sonic Colors was like the best Sonic game to come out since Unleashed. I guess the quality dropped when they made the Sonic Storybook games.

    1. I really dont think they were making excuses. They literally just said in the same breath that they were less focused on quality. They are admitting guilt, dont twist their words when they are admitting they made mistakes. Not sure how you are finding that interpretation of what he said. All he was doing was explaining how they lost sight of quality. They had the opportunity to release a lot of titles in a short amount of time, and they were more concerned with pumping out games than they were making those games good. Its not the Wiis fault, but the wii is the platform that enabled them to focus on quantity instead of quality. Still their fault, and I dont think the guy had any issue taking credit for that. You guys need to calm down. The new Sonic game is not going to disappoint, they are hyper aware of the problems they have had in the last decade.

    1. the fault on sonic 06 was the holidays, they wanted to launch it on that day. now wii quality games, there were a couple of them that were pretty good like colors. i guess their main focus was just rushing games to meet a deadline which backfired, i know people despise delays but delays are good, sure there was mighty no.flop and no mans flop but there are games that getting delayed is good, breath of the wilds was one that was tough to say that a delay was a good thing at first but now its a good thing. so all in all sega should have made delays for games that needed it like sonic 06 and tell investors that they get more money with quality games aka tell them to stop being greedy.

      1. seems like holidays are always the issue, the same happened to Sonic extreme (which never saw the light of the day) during the saturn days, Yes i agree with you, delays are good in some cases.
As i said to Jon (hollowgrapej) the other day, the main problem with sega and sonic is that they tried too much in making sonic the coolest character instead of making the games fun, except the gba and ds ones, IMO those were fun.

  2. Wii was released in 2006. What came from Sega in 2006? That’s right. Sonic ’06. What do the numbers in 2006 add up to? That’s right. 8. What’s 8 minus 5? 3. A triangle has 3 angles and 3 sides. Illuminati confirmed in helping create Sonic ’06 and making Sega start its lost focus.

  3. I assume other than Sonic ’06 they’re referring to Sonic and the Secret Rings & Sonic and the Black Knight, etc.

    *Looks at profile pic* 😂

  4. That sounds like they’re trying to blame it on the Wii. Sega so many of your terrible games were not because of the Wii so don’t try and pull that. It’s your own fault you made so many bad games the past 10 years.

    1. the thing is they do

      flappy birds

that other birdie game with shit you nock over carnt remember the garbage name

all phone games for that matter

      fifa

      cod

      shall i go on

      1. Simple doesn’t mean bad. Nothing wrong with phone games, just a different experience. Also, FIFA and Call of Duty are great games. Just being a different genre doesn’t make a game bad lol

People have different tastes, and a ton of people enjoy those games because those are the games they like. Don’t be an elitest prick

  5. Wow, that’s really immature, blaming the market instead of your low effort and, actually, you can sell bad games on other consoles too. Sonic 06 sold > 1 million on Xbox360 alone.

  6. lol blaming the wii and saying oh WE made shit games during this period…

i didnt kill my family alians did it…oh thats not me taking the old ladys handbag its my long lost twin brother…

the industry and its everything is nintendos fault BS

  7. Galactus The Planet Devourer

So the next Sonic for NX will be better I take it.
I heard NX will be open for preorder sept 21 and release march 5, 2017

  8. Implying Valkyrie Chronicles, Yakuza, MadWorld, Virtua Fighter 5, Jet Set Radio HD, Vanquish, Bayonetta, NiGHTS HD, House of the Dead Overkill, and both Sonic & Sega Racing games were bad titles. Yeah I know Platinum Games were independent developers of some of these titles, but Sega gave them the ok to make these games. And before anyone rags on me because of the title, the PS3 and Xbox 360 WERE thing back when the Wii was a thing and Sega mostly developed for those platforms at the time.

Though I do agree if Sega were talking about Sonic, Golden Axe (Beast Riders was a fucking disaster), some of the shit downloadable games (Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit for example), the Samba De Amigo port (The motion controls were terrible and some Americanized tracks didn’t belong there), and the newer Super Monkey Ball Games.

  9. Sega lots it’s touch after the Dreamcast for me….
Where is my Phantasy Stat Online 2 Sega? You only send us crappy games, but keep the good ones out of reach….
    I haven’t playes PSO 2 so i don’t know if its good…

      1. Oh, i had it there as well since it came with Ep. 1 and Ep. 2 and was co-op so it was even better for me since i never got the modem for the gamecube. The last bosses for both episodes where amazing.

        1. Yeah, I played the co-op with my twin. One of the things I liked about it. Co-op adventures have always been one of my favorite genres, and for some reason they have always been very scarce. Gauntlet Legends was another one I liked. The old Ninja Turtle games. Things like that.

          1. THE LOST FREAKING VIKINGS!!! I never beat that game or got past the first level, but damn! I loved that damn game anyway! One of many games I’d love to play again some day just for the chance to beat them, hoping I’ve become a better gamer since originally playing them so I can beat them.

            1. The game I most want to go back and play to see if I can beat it is the NES Ninja Turtles game. That game was like unbeatable back in the day haha. I never heard of the Lost Vikings though. Which console was it on?

                  1. If I remember correctly, if you had a second controller & a friend or family member willing to play, they could control one of the other vikings.

  10. for me the way it has been reported is that sega thought they could sell shit and stick Sonic name as title on the wii and get away with that because most of the casual gamers will find it good…. Really!!!! I would be reall surprise cause it’s not something you do with your most precious franchise….

  11. The correct thing to say is they lost sight of quality, for the most part, during the gen the Wii came out in. But it wasn’t just Sega, though. Nintendo (mostly at the end of the gen & then it continued into the next gen with the Wii U), Capcom (Resident Evil 5 & 6), Square Enix (Final Fantasy XIII’s sequels), and many others also lost sight of quality during that generation because everyone was trying to cash in on the casuals that moved the consoles of Wii, PS3, & XB360 to over 70-80+ million consoles sold. In other words, gaming as a whole lost sight of quality for the money they were raking in because of the casuals.

        1. Fuck Hungry Hungry Hippos! Everyone knows Monopoly was the most perfect gaming platform ever! It will never be surpassed! EVER!!!

                    1. Ew! Fucking hell no! Keep that shit far, far away from me! D: I’m in no hurry to deal with demons!

                      1. Haha. I’ve never played it myself. I’m curious about it though. I’ve heard stories, but I don’t know if people are just bullshitting. Probably. But you never know.

                        1. I’m one of those “Better safe than sorry!” types so I’m curious but not curious enough to find out for myself. So I stay away from them.
