Journalist Laura Dale has spoken to a source over at Ubisoft who has revealed to her that the Nintendo Switch’s right Joy-Con features IR pointer functionality. Dale says that the IR pointer would work similarly to the Wii Remote. This would make sense for something like Just Dance which we know is coming to Nintendo’s next console. Here’s what she had to say on the matter:
We believe the handheld, when docked, will switch on two small IR lights similar to the Wii Sensor Bar at the top of the handheld screen, peeking out above the top of the dock. The IR sensor in the right Joy-Con can then be used in much the same way as a Wii Remote pointer. This is designed to be used for touch screen replication, rather than the camera turning and aiming functions Wii Remotes were often used for.

I think we may get to a point where all this will start to confuse the common consumer.
Which is exactly why they didn’t try and reveal this in the initial trailer – because that definitely would have confused the message.

wait a sec… the wii required the sensor bar to be center-aligned with the TV. does this mean the Switch Dock has to be center-aligned, too?? hope not, i would have a hard time setting up my Switch that way.
I don’t think they showed it off that way in the preview and while it was just a preview… changing that seems unlikely.
Yea, it would have to be centered. It’s confusing though because I only saw one spot that looks like it can be an IR light and not only is that not enough lights, but it was at the bottom of the unit.
Maybe they don’t intend for it be used to track rotation and distance so one light is enough?
Sounds pretty cool. I was hoping both controls had motion controls to replicate the wiimote and bunching except way better lol

Seeing as Nintendo is steering the Switch as far away from the Wii label as possible, I’d say no. Plus we really don’t need a seventh control option.

The negativity I hear already splits my head, People say the console will be a little weaker than a base Xbox One. Nowhere close to PS4 let alone PS4 PRO. Then RTUSA says he expects $250 to $300 but less than 300$ usd because it’s weak.
As if they know anything about its capabilities in the slightest. People anger me. $200 it’s not worth more than that. Well you know what?!
