In the latest press release from Nintendo, it was confirmed that the latest iterations in the Pokémon series, Pokemon Sun and Moon, have become the fastest-selling games in Nintendo history in the Americas.
The company has seen an 85 percent increase on sales in comparison to Pokémon X and Y, with Sun and Moon selling a whopping 3.7 million units in just two weeks in the Americas.
Here’s the full press release:
“After becoming the most pre-ordered video games in Nintendo history, Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon – the latest games in the wildly popular Pokémon franchise – have now become the fastest-selling games that Nintendo has ever launched in the Americas. In less than two weeks, Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems sold a combined total of 3.7 million units. That’s an 85 percent increase over Pokémon X and Pokémon Y – the previous record holders for Nintendo’s fastest-selling games – during the same period when those games launched in 2013.
“With these huge sales figures, Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon have proved themselves as two of the hottest video games to buy this holiday season,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “With great reviews and outstanding fan response, these next iterations in the Pokémon series are sure to please any player in the family.”
All Pokémon-related software has sold more than 280 million units* worldwide since launching with the Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version games in 1996. The Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version games are both available for download in Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS. Other notable launches in the Pokémon series include Pokémon X and Pokémon Y(15.64 million games sold globally life-to-date), Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire (13.18 million games sold globally life-to-date).
In Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, Pokémon Trainers-in-the-making head to the game’s new Alola Region – a series of tropical islands – to catch, battle and trade Pokémon. By discovering new Z-Moves, Pokémon can unleash powerful attacks in battle. The new Poké Ride feature allows certain Pokémon to help people get to places they wouldn’t be able to reach by using human strength alone. In addition to three new partner Pokémon, players can catch a host of new Pokémon, as well as the unique regional variants of some familiar favorites.
*Total for all Pokémon-related software: more than 280 million units worldwide as of May 2016.”

Wow. I knew Sun and Moon are popular, but this was unexpected – in a good way.
And this account is very, very old. What was I thinking with that name?
||Good, the rise of The First Order is going as foreseen…||
The first order will reach its glory with BOTW sales and Switch sales surpassing that of ps pro and scorpio
||Your mind thinks way too small young one…||
My mind is on the future, once Switch outsells the Scorpio and PS Pro outsells Scorpio…microsoft gaming will fall. Then there will be two. Bring gaming back to Japan!
Microsoft ain’t going anywhere.
And just to think, there will be a mainline Pokémon game on the Switch within the first year of it’s availability on the market. I’m more than confident now that the Switch will be a big hit….especially because of the fact that a new 3D Mario title, an open world Zelda title and console version of a Pokémon title will all be bonafide system sellers
“But NO ONE plays pokemon anymore! It’s all rehashed trash!”
Pokemon is dying man. It’s obvious by these headlines.
Trash, no. But before Sun & Moon, the mainline games were rehashed: get starter Pokemon, catch more Pokemon, beat gyms, beat evil Team *insert name here*, beat Elite Four, play post game stuff, finish Pokedex. Pokemon, up til now, was Nintendo’s Call of Duty where only the story was different & there were minor changes from the previous entries. Finally a break from the usual!
Totally deserved, is a fantastic game.
Shut up
It’s sold more than Red and Blue? Its great to hear Sun and Moon is getting the recognition it deserves. They did a good job on this game, and it’s a really fresh take on the franchise.
Meant to say “selling faster that Red and Blue” ^
This record is the more success since X and Y.
Awesome. I love Moon. Alola is easily my favorite region. I’m enjoying it a lot more now that I’ve finished the main story. I was getting so sick of all the cutscenes and text boxes. I just want to explore, catch, and train!
Also the trials are suuuuuch an improvement over Gyms. Game Freak did fantastic. Really hoping Stars on Switch is true! I would love to play it on a tv in hd.
But will it meet the overall sales of 32.5 million units?
Pokémon is a force to be reckoned with.
wow nintendo did a good job with selling this game its rocks.
I know sometimes fastest selling doesn’t always mean the best selling, but I do think this will be the best selling Pokemon game to date.
Well it did beat off X and Y
And just to recap- Sun and Moon sold 2 million in Japan, 1.5 in Europe, and 4 million in the Americas.
So two week total = 7.5 million.
It’s one of the fastest game selling in history. Besides it did beat off X and Y.
99.9% of that demographic were people in their 30s maybe older who either
1. use expliots (haxs)
2. have no life Eg The Magikarp Sweep
or
3. Study the game that much it sucks the fun out of the main game and makes players think why the fuck should i even bother?
85.54% of statistics are pulled out of people’s ass. Fact.
That maybe so but the game’s target audience are for 7 -10 but in reality people old enough to be young parents play it. Stick that in your analytical brain and smoke it pal. #yougotserved!
Pretty sure it’s because of Pokemon GO!’s popularity; more non-gamers has exposed themselves to Pokemon because it was popular. If anything, Super Mario Run will do the same for Super Mario Switch next year.
