Creator of Kirby and Super Smash Bros, Masahiro Sakurai has certainly proved himself as an innovative game developer. In a recent edition of Famitsu, Sakurai talked about the importance of thinking outside the box when developing games. Praising Platinum’s latest NieR game, he emphasised that games are at their best when players feel like the are trying something for the first time. Source Gaming translated the full article here.
I think it’s always important to question if we should simply keep reusing and adhering to the old standards and existing systems. Sometimes you do end up going with what’s established, and that’s fine, but there’s no drawback to trying to think outside the box.
I’m not saying people should deliberately try to be weird, and make unconventional games. But in the case of NieR, everything about the game is done with intent and purpose, and choices like the one to make the main character an android feel like one part of a defined greater vision.
The experience of feeling something you wouldn’t normally feel. I think that feeling of “trying something for the first time” is very important.

I suppose it was thinking outside the box when he decided to remove all the single player fun out of the latest Smash Bros.
No, that was because we could always watch the cutscenes to it on YouTube or something, without playing the game ourselves.
You can do that in with most games though… its having to experience it yourself that makes if fun
I can’t believe there are still idiots that defend that bullshit excuse of Sakurai’s. *facepalm*
It was a retarded bullshit excuse. Anyone that defends it is just as stupid. Let’s not sell movies anymore, either, while we are at it since people can just watch it for free on Youtube, right? See. I can sound just as retarded as Sakurai with his excuse.
Smash Run was fun in singleplayer.
He was when he gave us Cloud, Bayonetta, Ryu, Mario, MegaMan, Pac-Man, AND Sonic in one game. Up until Smash 4, that was only heard of in flash games on new grounds.
Sakurai is a genius and knows how to make great multiplayer experiences. Kirby Super Star’s co-op, Air Rides cult City Trial mode, the online multiplayer in Uprising, and the smash series. I’m not a fan of all his decisions (I dislike the punishment system in Uprising. I don’t want to pay to try the hardest mode. Just let me do it over again until I improve on my own like I do in challenging game modes) but I respect him

Super Mario Crotch
I think he is still talking about the next project he is working on.
Sakurai now has 2 games with perfect famitsu scores…
Smash Bros Brawl
Kid Icarus Uprising.. ..
I think he has one more but I’m not so sure.
Most smash games seem the same to me though.. . So I don’t know how far outside the box he thinks.. . But I can certainly say he’s a work horse.. . Hope his hand has fully healed
