Makers Of Fire Emblem Warriors On How They Chose Characters For The Game

Online publication Kotaku had the chance to catch up with Masahiro Higuchi from Intelligent Systems and also Yosuke Hayashi from Koei Tecmo to interview them about all things Fire Emblem Warriors.

During the interview, the duo spoke about how they chose the characters to feature in the upcoming title, with Masahiro Higuchi advising, “when we were selecting characters for the game we definitely put strategy first, and that came down to weapons with sword users, axe users, and lancers. We wanted to choose characters that would make up the classic classes and add tactical elements for the gameplay.”

Also during the interview, Higuchi spoke about how they kept fans in mind when choosing characters for Fire Emblem Warriors, “We really wanted to choose characters from around three games that make sense from a fan perspective. That’s why we chose Shadow Dragon, Awakening, and Fates to focus on.”

Fire Emblem Warriors will be released this Autumn on the Nintendo Switch, with no official release date at this time.

  1. It makes no sense from fan perspective to have Shadow Dragon in…. absolute no sense. At all.
    Blazing Blade, on the other side….

      1. But that means nothing from fan perspective, “nobody” played Shadow Dragon and the Sword of Light and even the remake is not very popular, choosing that game over, ahem, Blazing Blade for one, is like choosing Mother 1 over Mother 2 and saying that it was chosen based on “fan perspective”…. in other words, it’s bs.
        And last but not least, if they really made the choices based on fan perspective, there is a whole ballot with Lyn and Ike sitting at the top for them to take a hint….

        1. For you maybe Blazing Blade is more popular but we are talking about Japanese developers where in Japan Shadow Dragon is more popular than the Blazing Blade. I think it’s just a preference of the developers what characters want to put in the game. For me having the characters from 3 FE games is already good.

        2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

          Me & Kantenstain covered that further up. That poll was most likely also used to gauge who would be perfect for DLC.

    1. Maybe not fans who have stayed for long term instead of jumping on the bandwagon around Awakening. I would’ve loved to see some Sacred Stones characters in there with it being my first game and all, but they chose to stick with the games that are popular for the new fans of the series, and Shadow Dragon because it’s the very first installment.

  2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

    I want DLC characters. I want my Lyndis, damn it!

        I’d enjoy having Ike in the game but I’m more concerned for Lyndis right now.

        Eirika would be nice, too.

  3. Really excited to try this game. Love the warriors gameplay, and I really enjoy the lore of Fire Emblem but aren’t really into that genre. So I’m glad to get into the story a lil with this spin off.

  4. This sounded like a bunch of b*llshit in my opinion. They probably know the hardcore fans want characters from FE7 and so on, but want release it with the main game because they know idiots (like myself) are going to by Hector and Lyndis. Need I remind you all that Roy, Ike, Hector and Lyndis was the top of the FE ballot? I knew it from the start that poll was just to map out which characters would fit the DLC-bill the best.

      Now that you mention it, they probably did have a hidden agenda with that shit. The hidden agenda being who to best use as DLC only characters. -.-

          While I do enjoy me some DLC, I don’t like tactics like that. It’s very shady.

          1. The whole Echoes deal was shady as well. Shitload of content was ready at launch and the following weeks + the season pass was more expensive than the main game. Nintendo now know that Fire Emblem fans are the real deal, and now want to milk us all dry…

              I skipped Fates… and I like the waifu crap & no permadeath stuff. While Awakening was Fire Emblem’s saving grace, it has also become it’s curse. :/

              1. Yeah, it is. It’s so horrible to say: “At least I should be glad there are releases.” kind of Stockholm syndrome really…
                The worst thing about Fates was its setting and story.

            2. King Kalas X3 {Greatness Awaits at Sony PlayStation 4; Awaiting Greatness on Nintendo Switch!}

              I think I might be skipping Valentia, too.

      1. Valentia’s good stuff. Best Fire Emblem on the 3DS. I would highly recommend you not give a pass if you’re a fan of series.

  5. Such a disappointment. They cast away this massive pool of great characters just so they can cash in on both the fan service and DLC.

  6. It kinda ruins the hype I had for this game,I never played Shadow Dragon,Awakening or Fates,as someone who play Fire Emble GBA,Sacred Stone,Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn its very dissapointing that I won’t see any of the characters I’m familiar with,I might still pick up the game…or not it depends

    1. If I may say; Please don’t let the stigma of the fans let you decide whether or not to buy the newer games. I’ve played Awakening and Fates and while I agree they’re not perfect, they are not as bad as people make them out to be. I absolutely loved these games and would gladly go play through them again, despite the issues with the story that I also feel people make sound way worse than they actually are. Obviously opinions are subjective but I know a butt load of people that love these games so clearly it is possible to enjoy these games.

  7. So despite all the other FE games and great units like Eirika, Ephraim, Seth, and Lyndis, they stick to only the more contemporary games and units. At this rate, I would not be surprised if they put Awakening faves like Inigo, Severa, Owain, and Lucina in FE Warriors- after all the first 3 of them were shoehorned into Fates where they had aliases for some reason.

  8. Sigh…When is Intelligent Systems going to realize that Shadow Dragon is not as revered as they think it is? It may have the first batch of characters in the franchise, but they are not the most popular.

    Marth is the only character from that game with any real popularity. Sure, there’s Tiki but her portrayal in Awakening has become more well known than her child form from Shadow Dragon.

    Just look at the Fire Emblem Heroes Popularity Poll, Marth is the only SD character to make it. More characters from Sacred Stones were voted higher than Shadow Dragon’s characters. Intelligent Systems is so full of shit and so is Koei Tecmo for going along with them.

  9. I’m calling BS on this! They only chose characters from their recent FE games to get more attention for those games. I hate when these devs spew lies like this, thinking that people would actually fall for that of “We’re listening to the fans” bull!shit when in reality they never listen unless it’s to save their own financial asses before they financially suffer.
    I like the Switch, but If Nintendo were truly listening to the fans this entire time Nintendo would have released a better system, or at least just told the damn truth and said they plan to replace the 3ds with the Switch, as we all know that’s their plan.
    Btw in late 2018-mid 2019, when the 3ds is finally dead, we will see a brand new dedicated home console from Nintendo announced. They would be completely stupid not to do this. Let’s just hope their console focuses on higher stable frame rates, where 60 fps is the lowest it drops while anything above is average and HQHDR, along with 4k if possible.

    1. As much money as Nintendo owners spend on those retarded extra accessories, LIKE A DAMN REAL STANDARD CONTROLLER, Nintendo should be the last ones spewing crap like “an affordable gaming system” when trying to make a sell for their platform, because it complete Bullsh!t!
      Nintendo need to just make a damn powerful console, allow connection between sain console and Switch, allow digital purchases to be shared between both Switch and said new console, allow Switch to stream games from new home console exclusives that are to demanding for the Switch to run on it’s own, REAL CONTROLLER ADDED WITH THE DAMN CONSOLE, keep physical media, and allow save back ups for both the Switch and new home console along with custom themes.

      1. Okay so hang on a minute; You are aware that Fire Emblem Awakening sold better than any other Fire Emblem game at that point in time right? And as I recall I believe Fire Emblem Fates sold even better than that which means focusing on those games makes perfect sense. As for Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon, yeah we all know they’re just bringing those in because it’s a remake of the original and we kinda need Marth in this game as he’s, you know, the face of Fire Emblem.
        Also, just to point out, they said they keep “fans in mind”, they didn’t say they were basing it on a characters overall popularity and that instead they were focusing on classes first.
        Like it or hate it; Nintendo is a business before anything and they are always going to put profit before anything just like any business does. This mentality of “Nintendo has to pander to it’s fans and do what we want” is just wrong, they act based on what is the best cause for profit, which is 1 of the reasons they so easily shoe-horned Corrin into Smash Bros, to promote the upcoming games.
        Does it suck that things are this way? Sadly yes but that’s the nature of business, Nintendo are not going to do what the fans want if they do not believe it will be profitable.

  10. Can I be honest? I’m happy they’re focusing on these 3 games, Fates and Awakening especially.
    I never liked the older games because permadeath is a concept I detest so when I found out they were not forcing it anymore, I was happy to jump on board.
    People seem to think that only focusing on 3 games greatly limits their choices, this I 100% disagree with, these games have a huge cast of characters. As I recall Fates had over 60 playable characters and that’s just 1 game so throwing in 2 more on top of that is a huge selection, especially with how many fan-favourites there are.
