Did You Know Gaming? Takes A Look At The GameCube (Part Two)

The informative team over at Did You Know Gaming? Have uploaded the second part of a fascinating video about the history behind the much-loved Nintendo GameCube. No doubt you’ll want to watch the video that unearths the history behind the successor to the Nintendo 64. Here’s the details:

“With rumblings that we might see GameCube games on the Nintendo Switch, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, Easter eggs and history of the Nintendo GameCube. This console followed the Nintendo 64 (N64), was succeeded by the Nintendo Wii, and had many games that boasted comparability with the Game Boy Advance (GBA). Another version of the GameCube was released under the name Panasonic Q, though this was short lived. The console was the home to many Nintendo franchises, including Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros, Pokemon, Mario kart, Mario Party, Metroid, and was the birth place of Pikmin and Animal Crossing in the west. Through our analysis of the GameCube, the console’s games and their beta builds, we hope to show some of the more interesting facts from the making of the GameCube and have its history explained.”

Thanks SimonSP for the tip!

    2. Gimmicks for money you say? Bar the Wii U, these gimmicks for money are actually proving to be successful. Besides, what does a company need to stay afloat? Simple, Money, Dosh, Wonga, Dollars, Pounds, Yen, Rupees, Euros.

      1. what the fuck are you talking about.
Wii is a piece of shit weak gimmick console that give alot money to Nintendo.

And Wii u is the worst gimmick failure home console nintendo ever made.

back then it was a joke if you were a normal person and not a nintendo fun or a casual gamer to have a wii for REAL. you only had wii just because of curiosity. for the motion controlls. no1 who is normal cared for Wii for real everyone got ps3 or xbox360 to have it as main console Wii always was more like a troll console to have.

And wii u lol. The worst home console ever from nintendo. with many games missing from there.

    3. Wow, you are a troubled little thing. Speaking about “normal” people as if you know anything about what constitutes being “normal” and what that has to do with their preferences in a gaming console. I believe if you look at sales figures for the Wii and the Switch, consumers by a majority are very interested in what Nintendo is selling for their “underpowered” systems. And what better definition for “normal” is there than the collective understanding of the majority?

Moron. i didn’t talk about switch. im talking about the wii. and yes you have to be a moron and not a normal person to have a wii as main console and not have ps3 or xbox on the time back then. Stfu already it is a shit weak console vs real consoles like ps3 and xbox. Only casuals bough wii and Nintendo funs. Lol the not even skyrim on wii what a joke or wii u. Glad that i emulate all the great games on pc such as xenoblade. But to play Xenoblade Without HD on a tv? wow what a joke.

  1. So MS had the audacity to try to purchase Ninty? Damn, im glad they didnt though. Who knows what wouldve happened back then. Even today with Phil in charged, I wouldnt want that because as great as phil is, he still answers to suits that know jack shit about gaming.

      1. Rare was a dying company though, im surprised Sony didnt get to them first. Also, I wonder if anyone remembers that Ninty had first dibs on buying Rare, and they passed.

And to that, I say Nintendo were fucking idiots. Even if the talent was gone, Nintendo was more than capable of replacing the talent & could have made franchises out of Conker, Perfect Dark, & Killer Instinct for years to come with the right leaders. Hell! Rare’s library of games would have made great virtual console for the Wii.

Letting Rare go will always be Nintendo’s biggest failure/mistake.

      3. That is a huge whopping YES, I still wonder why they didnt buy rare off. As you said, the talent was gone, but those IP’s wouldve been a great addition. Who k ows why though, because they owned what, 40% of the company? All they needed was an extra 10% to own tye majority and it wouldve been ok.

In fact, when Mortal Kombat stopped coming to Nintendo systems, Killer Instinct would have been a great replacement. I sometimes wonder if Nintendo let Rare go to Microsoft in an attempt to eliminate competition for their franchises.

Fuck those people that made fun of it looking like a lunchbox! I still say the Gamecube is one of the best, awesomest looking consoles in video game history.

So a Texas company has tried to fuck Nintendo before, eh!? I’m not fond of Nintendo these days but fuck you, Texas! I loved that Gamecube controller!

Yamauchi made the right call in not accepting Microsoft’s offer. Just look at how far Rare has fallen under Microsoft’s control. A shame Nintendo didn’t keep Rare because they had the capability of doing with Rare what Microsoft obviously couldn’t: replace the talent that left with talent that could have equally been as great as the former talent if not better. (Who’s the idiot at Nintendo that thought it was a good idea to let Rare go!? That’s a massive library of games that could have been selling on the Wii, Wii U, & eventually the Switch.)

The Panasonic Q actually looked pretty cool. A shame it fell through. I would have bought it.

  3. “and had many games that boasted comparability with the Game Boy Advance”

Wait…..WHAT? The Gamecube blew the Game Boy Advance away. After all, it was a console, and the GBA was a handheld. How can they say that the games were comparable to GBA games?

Oh well, with that said, the Gamecube will always be one of my favorite Nintendo consoles. In fact, the design of the Gamecube is my favorite out of all of Nintendo’s consoles. It’s just so darn cute. I haven’t cared much for the design of any Nintendo console since (sadly, the Switch is my LEAST favorite design). And the name “Gamecube” is perfect. It explains exactly what it is. A cube that plays games. I love everything about the Gamecube. Even the controllers. Both wired and the Wavebirds.

The only thing that bugged me was the memory cards, and how they didn’t hold enough saved games. I bought an official memory card 1019, and it got corrupted for absolutely no reason. I lost SO many saved games. And to top that off, it was unfixable. I was never able to use that memory card again. Because there was no way to format it. And I wouldn’t have trusted it anymore anyway.

    1. And that whole GBA Connector thing that allowed the Cube and GBA to communicate. Some games to utilize it were the original Animal Crossing, Billy Hacther and the Giant Egg, and I think even the later Mario Party games for the system used it.

  4. It was a good console, but for me a major letdown (both Luigi eand Mario games very unappealing and Wind Waker not what I was expecting). Smash Bros was really good though. Luckily the Nintendo Switch has not let me down.
In that generation Sony and Microsoft were far stronger than now in terms of offering.

  5. Gamecube is still my favorite home console from Ninty, giving us amazing titles like Melee, the first two Metroid Prime titles, Luigi’s Mansion (of which I’m currently doing my annual Halloweentime playthrough), and my favorite game, F-Zero GX. I wonder if Switch will usurp it one day because so far it’s on fire.
