Nintendo Wants Certain Third Party Developers To Create Mature Games

Nintendo is well-known for being a family friendly company with its diverse range of exceedingly good cute and colourful titles. However, a report from the Wall Street Journal suggests that the Kyoto-based company is encouraging developers to make mature games for the platform in an effort to win PlayStation and Xbox owners over.

“Nintendo Co. is encouraging some producers of violent or risqué videogames to provide content for its Switch console in an attempt to shed its image as a maker of devices just for families, software developers say.”

“Developers say more titles for mature audiences are coming after Nintendo encouraged them to publish a wide range of games for the Switch.”

    1. I honestly think they don’t need Nintendo for this. I feel the Xbox brand might be no more after the Scorpio fiasco.

      1. King Kalas X3 {I only buy exclusives that interest me on Switch. For everything else that interests me, there is PS4.}

        Awww! You’re still thinking of me after I struck that nerve!? How adorable! *pats his little head* Here’s a cookie. You’re welcome.

  1. Took them long enough. I assume this is the new CEOs direction. But it’s honestly for the better, just look at the sales.
    But it’s also Nintendo’s responsibility to publish its own T and M rated games. Honestly the new Metroid should be M, and they should be making (I’m pretty sure they are) eternal darkness for switch.
    Hopefully we see bayoneta ports and the third game also come.
    They also shouldn’t be afraid to make new M rated first party games.

    1. Did it really?
      Wii had mature games like No More Heroes, No More Heroes 2, Call of Duty (Up until Modern Warfare 3), Madworld, Bully, Manhunt 2 and many others.

      NES and SNES had very few if any Mature games.

      N64 had a few mature games (e.i. Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Golden Eye)

      GameCube had one Exclusive Mature title called Eternal Darkness

      Nintendo Wii U had Black Ops 2, Bayonetta + Bayonetta 2 (EXCLUSIVES), Devil’s Third, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, Watch_Dogs, Deus Ex Human Revolution: Director’s Cut, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Darksiders 2 and so on.

      So yeah, there has been a large portion of Mature games on most Nintendo Systems but the reason why they dropped off so quickly is due to the fact the audience on those systems barely bought them. It’s more to do with the sales of Mature titles on Nintendo Systems more than Nintendo.

      1. Nes and snes had very few mature games??? hahaha what a joke say hello to Mortal Kombat (The most Violent console video game ever released at the time) , Street Fighter , Killer Instinct. Or how about Double dragon stabbin people with knives and shit , Final Fight and a bunch of others. Wolfenstein for the Snes wich was sick at that time and age Nazi flags and shit hanging everywhere. Turtles beating shit up , ton of shooters with air planes/space ships and also games with walking character shooting shit up. I bet I can think of more if I really make an effort. Nintendo used to offer what Sony and Microsoft have offered since there release dude. These games used to be the third party of the 90’s (among many other stuff like Mega Man, Castlevania and a nearly endless list of almost 900 games in total released in the USA alone)

    2. Bayonetta is good but far from being a system seller. Nintendo is playing his cards right this year with the rd-parties sports titles showing Switch adopters they can have their sports fix anywhere they want now just as much as any other consoles out there. Next year will be what you guys are asking for.

      1. Nintendo is a big company with many different development teams. The sole reason they’ve never actually made a ‘mature’ game is to keep their family friendly image. Now, since they want to expand their horizons and audience, a newly Nintendo made M-rated game would only help push that expansion.
        That’s not to say that an older audience doesn’t enjoy games like Mario and Zelda (in fact that’s pretty much the biggest audience for them nowadays. But Nintendo are creative game makers, I for one would like to see them make something like a horror game, or an adventure game that pushes more mature themes.

      2. King Kalas X3 {I only buy exclusives that interest me on Switch. For everything else that interests me, there is PS4.}

        Nintendo is all about being innovative. It’s time to be innovative with a mature title or two made by them.

        Yeah. Nintendo is too chickenshit to make their own mature games. Maybe one day they’ll regrow a pair again.

  2. This is something of a myth. It’s isn’t the rating or arbitrary levels of blood that’s required for that target audience, its games that take themselves seriously. Japanese culture favors a certain degree of androgeny and abstract silliness in its titles that the young western audience has never taken to. When Zelda took itself seriously, it was a favorite of virtually everyone. When it moved to a psuedo anime style, with lots over the top silly and extremely Japanese NPCs, the audience shrank to only Zelda enthusiasts.

    If you want a game that targets the young western audiences, make a game that reflects the western culture.

    Granted, I’m not saying Nintendo *has* to do any of these things to be successful, or that any of those Japanese affectations are bad. Just that Japanese culture obviously doesn’t resonate with Americans the way American culture does and if you make the choice to market to that audience you have to actually market to that audience.

  5. The only one I’m really hoping for is Dark Souls.
    There aren’t too many M-rated games that interest me these days, but I’d happily rebuy Dark Souls 1 & 3 for the Switch.
    I’d also rebuy Persona 5 for the Switch, but I know that’s a pipe-dream and will likely never, ever happen.
    Having P5 on the go would be awesome though.

  6. Well, I’m definitely getting Doom when it comes out. Idk about Skyrim anymore because I’m hesitant to get into another 300+ hour game at this point considering how long it’s taken me just to beat Mario + Rabbids in my spare time.

  7. This is great news, I would love Nintendo themselves to revisit mature titles as well. I would definitely be looking forward to a Eternal Darkness remake or sequel, and also new ip’s that are mature as well. That balance would bring them back to the NES days.

  8. King Kalas X3 {I only buy exclusives that interest me on Switch. For everything else that interests me, there is PS4.}

    As long as NintenD’OH! *facepalm* of America doesn’t screw them up like they did Fatal Frame 5, this would be a good thing. Of course, would any of those risque games make it out of Japan? Is Gal*Gun & that Senran Kagura game for Switch coming stateside? I can’t remember.

  9. “Rat-tat-tat-tat late at night with my gat
    On the streets of L.A
    Wonderin’ where the pussy at
    Straight player, looking for a ho
    Hangin’ out, rollin’ in my ’64”

    Come now Rudeboi Nintendo

  10. Everyone says Nintendo should make their own M rated games. So I came up with some titles:
    Super Mario Massacre
    Metroid: Zero Suit
    Super Smash Gals
    Mushroom Kingdom Strip Poker (for moble phones)
