Digital Foundry Compares Sonic Forces On Consoles

The team over at Digital Foundry have been hard at work comparing the various console versions of Sonic Forces. The results, along with the reviews we’ve seen, aren’t pretty. The Nintendo Switch version is clearly the weakest among the three versions and is the least responsive. Here’s a quick write-up from ResetEra member, chronic_archaic:

  • 1080p 60fps on PS4 and Pro, no Pro support.
  • 720p 60fps on Xbox One. Screen tearing, adaptive v-sync, most responsive
  • 720p 30fps on Switch, lower level of detail, looks worse overall, least responsive
  • 3200×1800 60fps on Xbox One X in some levels, 1080p 60fps in others, on par with Xbox One with responsiveness

    1. They probably didn’t do it because of Black Friday and christmas, but they should have pushed it a few months back.
I mean Switch is one thing (I’m sure they could have achieved 60fps 720p with a bit more optimization), but look at the other consoles. They didn’t do shit for the PS4 Pro, and the upgrades for the Xbox One X are a joke. Hope they patch all those things (maybe a few issues have already been addressed with the day one patch, not sure if Digital Foundry already had it)

  1. Sonic forces = a complete steaming, dumpster fire, in my opinion.

Modern has terrible blocky level design, linear corridors with minimal interaction and literal boost to win game play. Classic has flawed physics once again and the avatar isn’t much better than modern either.

Just like federation force, the main problem is that we want the EXACT gameplay of games in the past we love (adventure, unleashed, mania) to come back instead of literal boost to win nonsense and a poor man’s mania.

Hell I’d even take Colors 2 over this. Absolutely pathetic.

      ||Not only the game-play, I want its essence back, but it abandoned it when it transformed into 3D…||

      1. While I actually like sonic in 3d *sometimes* I very much am not a fan of forces apart from maybe the music, in some sections at least.

I think they need to make classic sonic in 3d, if they want to make sonic in 3d work. No dumb gimmicks or anything like that;just the core game play mechanics like momentum and stuff that the classics had.

I wouldn’t even mind an adventure 3 or colors 2, but sonic team NEEDS to stop with this boost to win garbage and this terrible, linear and blocky level design!

      2. And the reason I say I’d like a colors 2, even if that’s “boost to win” still is because at least that game didn’t have literal straight corridors for level design!

          ||It got ruined for me once the homing attack was introduced, it made every weapon iteration of Sonic from there on, a swim in the park as humans say…||

          ||Enemies could just as easily not be in them and fighting bosses is basically QTE half of the fights as well because of this attack…||

          ||The constant dialogue during game-play in the last few years is another pathetic feature which turns this into another Hollywood D-movie nonsense that some humans like so much in certain parts of this planet…||

          1. Eh, I’m believe that another go at a Sonic Adventure could be great if they overhauled the controls and physics. They could also stand to not take the story so seriously and vary up the level design.
Honestly, just take some tips from Mario and Sonic could be just as good. However, Sega clearly is just content with the opposite.
Pretty disappointing too, because as of now we two incarnations of Sonic:
One that’s 2D and plays really well.
And one that’s basically 2.5D and plays like rubbish.
Just make modern Sonic full 3D and start from square one again.

              ||They altered the formula too much from 2D to 3D, this is why Sonic is a failure and Mario is a success overall…||

              1. Very true, exactly why Sega should take a page from Mario’s book. The change from Mario’s 2D reach the end style to his 3D goal oriented style was nearly seamless in execution because it retained everything that makes a Mario game a Mario game and added more upon it. Sonic stumbles in that regard for Sega’s switch to a more linear style that most of time focuses on sheer spectacle over the actual gameplay. Imagine another Sonic Adventure game where momentum based movement and open level design takes center stage, with an added dimension and preferably much variation between each level. Sounds a lot better than whatever Sonic Forces has to offer.

                  ||Fascinating, you have a sense to see essence, other than that yes, they should go back to formula, especially analysing Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and 3…||

          ||It is a solid weapon, however, half of the bosses are out of place and do not fit into the style or atmosphere at all…||

Methinks he wants to be THE Nintendo First Order Reaver.

    2. The main levels largely aren’t impressing me (the first tag-team stage was pretty cool though), but I’ve liked the first fight with Infinite and the Egg Dragoon so far. Classic Sonic made sense in Generations, but here- seriously, no pun intended- feels forced into the game; his 2D stages could have gone to literally any other character and it would have made more sense. You also start with literally nothing for your custom avatar aside from deciding their body (species, eye appearance, color, etc.), you earn the gear like gloves, glasses, and hats as you play, but since they don’t do anything to aid gameplay (such as certain gear giving auto-generating a ring every 5 seconds or giving you an extra second of invulnerability after getting hit), why do you have to unlock them?

And it seems like certain sections punish you for going fast- there’s one segment in an early jungle level that goes through a half-pipe that is full of enemies- the best way through it- and the intended way through it, it seems- is to boost through, but it curves so sharply that I wound up flinging myself off the level over and over again. So it became this terrible version of red-light-green-light trying to get through the section without dashing to my death.

I’m not sure how I feel about the game yet.

Keep me updated on your personal feelings about the game, Brisk.

… I fucking love Infinite’s theme but… I think I should hold off on Sonic Forces til Sega hopefully patches some things. Right now, I’m not liking what I’m hearing from the people not liking the game’s gameplay. The story sounds pretty awesome, though, & I’m liking Infinite’s personal story. (Shadow, you might have a rival for my #1 favorite Sonic character. lol)
