Nintendo Removing Native American References In Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Nintendo has issued a statement regarding Mr. Game & Watch in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. One of the moves references a game from 1982 which was titled, Fire Attack. It was a cowboy game where players were tasked with defending a “wooden fort from screaming Native Americans who wielded burning torches and wore feathers in their hair.” Nintendo has told Eurogamer that it will issue an update which will remove the feather from the silhouette of Mr. Game & Watch.

“Nintendo has been planning to distribute an update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that removes the feather from the silhouette of Mr. Game & Watch,” a Nintendo spokesperson told Eurogamer today. “The original game on which this depiction of the character is based was released more than three decades ago and does not represent our company values today.

“We sincerely apologise that this change was not noticed in our marketing material and are continuing our work to make Super Smash Bros. Ultimate an experience that is both welcoming and fun for everyone.”

    1. great! reference every single culture in the world but mine! #nativelives matter. We were great warriors and we demand to be represented!

      1. I guess we aren’t PC enough to be listened to so the app will continue to have exclusive things when the app should be just one more way to use the Switch’s features, making it an optional thing.

  1. On another note, video game companies are never again allowed to use the likeness of any culture. No more vikings, no more knights, no more samurai or ninja. It’s over, folks.

But seriously, companies bending over backwards for small, yet loud minorities is one of the biggest issues in the industry. People just need to grow the hell up and allow companies, especially so from cultures that don’t necessarily share your values, do their thing. Most of these loud minorities never had any intention of buying the game, and thus can’t vote with their wallets, so they need to police on others’ fun by shouting and harrassing the people responsible for the product. It’s god damn ridiculous.

    1. Indeed, so counterproductive for the Indian culture too, tell me how much content is produced nowadays that represents then at all? almost none is like they are fading into non-existence, and I guess this what they want.

    1. Wait, you’re skipping a new smash game because they are taking a feather off of Mr. G&W’s head? Of all the things to turn you away from the new game, that’s the one that’s gonna prevent you from enjoying the game? Seriously?

    1. Sad, that the other, more important issues are not put into a bright spotlight like this… Instead we have people whining about their first world problems. You know you have it too good when you complain about pixels…

  2. Wow. A fucking feather is offensive nowadays. It’s something so small most people won’t give even half of a shit.

Thankfully other companies don’t bend so easily. I’m very much looking forward to Doom Eternal and it’s “mortally challenged” enemies 😂

  3. The comments here, lol, good lord guys, get over it. Also- yeah, there is a minority complaining about this, its indigenous people… complaining about how their culture is being portrayed, so… maybe they have more of a stake in this and more of a right to complain than people who apparently desperately need to see a feather on MGW’s head. The indigenous genocide is still a touchy issue, especially in “crazy times” when the US gov tries to take away their voting rights after centuries of murdering them, and indigenous communities in Canada don’t have access to clean drinking water.

But like boohoo, someone called my game racist so I’m gunna use that to reinforce my ideas about “PC culture” instead of listening to natives.

    1. Expect I saw 0 indigenous people complaining about this and as a matter the ones I did see didnt give single shit but I did see white people offended FOR them.

    2. “, there is a minority complaining about this, its indigenous people… complaining about how their culture is being portrayed, ”

This is a lie. There is not a minority complaining about this. Every single time the actual tribes get polled on these issues, they are nearly universally opposed to this nonsense. What this is, is political posturing and profiteering.

“The indigenous genocide is still a touchy issue, ”

Good thing it’s not remotely touched upon by Smash Bros. in any way shape or form.

” especially in “crazy times” when the US gov tries to take away their voting rights after centuries of murdering them, and indigenous communities in Canada don’t have access to clean drinking water.”

For a start, the tribes are no more or less indigenous than I am. Their people migrated over long before they were born, as did mine. To the meat though, even if all of what you say is true (and most of it is propaganda), that has *absolutely nothing* to do with Nintendo having a feather in a video game about video games.

Mr. Game and Watch is a monochrome blocky representation of the vague outline of a person. How can he appropriate a culture? For all we know, in the context of that GW release, he was actually portraying a tribe.

“But like boohoo, someone called my game racist so I’m gunna use that to reinforce my ideas about “PC culture” instead of listening to natives.”

You aren’t listening to natives. We’re the ones listening to natives. Every single time polls are run on the actual people, not politicians, they soundly reject this race hustling in their name. Go ahead and google it.

Show me the receipts. Where are these polls? I can’t find a single instance of a poll showing indigenous approval of non-native people using their culture in ways that make them seem like dangerous savages. Or do you mean those polls that telephoned 500 people in 1994 and didn’t check to see if the respondents were actually native? And then those polls were used ad nauseum to proliferate the idea that its okay for non-natives to do so. https://newsmaven.io/indiancountrytoday/archive/67-percent-of-native-americans-say-redskins-is-offensive-fOsUcarY9kGSU9jpfLospg/

“Good thing it’s not remotely touched upon by Smash Bros. in any way shape or form.”

Except it is- by yet again portraying natives as fire-brandishing savages

Unless you belong to a tribe or a band, you don’t bud. Plain and simple. I don’t know you, but if you are claiming indigenous heritage because your ancestors moved here in the last few hundred years… you’re not indigenous (the word means: the people native to a place, ie. those that have lived there and developed culture over thousands of years, not colonists descendants). Maybe you’re metis, but again, I doubt it. Also… propaganda? No- here are several news articles about the ongoing suppression of indigenous communities. MANY native communities in Canada still dont have clean water, and the last of the residential schools was closed in the mid-90s.

They addressed this in their response to it. Also, this isn’t new news- they changed his appearance to a bandit in the 2000’s release of GW, for the exact same reason they’re changing it now- because it portrays natives as savages. You’re really grasping at straws to try and include what many studies and conversations with natives have already condemned.

Referencing a poll that you don’t cite or name is not “listening to natives”, and I’m blown away that you think that counts. But hey, that’s just my opinion… based on talking to native friends, reading about indigenous genocide and reconciliation, supporting native artists and attending events that talk about contemporary native issues. Failing that, here’s a wikipedia article.

I’m out. Can’t wait to tan your ass online, Jigglypuff main, get rekt.

    3. Though I am about as PC as an iPhone and only slightly more Native American than Elizabeth Warren, I think that it’s fine that they removed it. The Native American community’s all stood up and said they were fine with the sports teams and helicopters because it was positive, but in the game and watch this move referenced it shows Indians attempting to burn down a military base with torches, which is kind of a negative stereotype. While I won’t deny that some Natives did do similar things, this was not the norm and while they may not have been justified you can at least understand why they did it. After being forced off their homeland in spite of having peace with the settlers for a time would feel like a betrayal to just about anyone.

  4. Fucking really Nintendo?? THIS is the issue to tackle out off ALL the others you have?? That’s not even to mention how relatively fast this response was.

  5. Nice one Nintendo. At least now everyone don’t want to hear this crap like this because i don’t think the character is racist. All we hear from that video is just huge insults.

  6. Note to self: sombreros are fine, Native American headdresses aren’t.

Seriously, headdresses being racist never crossed my mind and if it’s not intended to be used in a racist way, then it’s the complainers who are racist, not the companies, and they need to stop pandering to the two people who are offended when the rest of the world doesn’t care. Next you’ll tell me the remastered Peter Pan is gonna remove all scenes containing the Native American characters.

Why can’t we have nice things without someone shoving their views down people’s throats?

  7. The only thing worse than people complaining about a little feather in a video game are people complaining about the REMOVAL of a little feather in a video game.

    1. “The only thing worse than people complaining about a little feather in a video game are people complaining about the REMOVAL of a little feather in a video game.”

Nobody’s complaining about the removal of a little feather in a video game. They’re complaining about the principles involved in the line of reasoning behind the feather’s removal. If you came to me and asked me for one dollar, I’d probably give it to you and think nothing of it. If you asked me for $1 because I was wearing a tan shirt, and tan shirts in some way offend you because of the color of shirts people wore hundreds of years ago, how am I going to feel about giving you that dollar?

  8. Was this really necessary? Not really, it’s such a miniscule detail that references a much older game that does not represent modern Nintendo in any way.
That said, the detail is indeed so miniscule that I’m surprised that anyone at all cares that it’s removed. It’s a feather on two frames of animation, I’m not going to pretend like I care that’s it’s gone or that this game is worse off because of it. Entirely cosmetic.
That being said again, people really need to grow thicker skin for this kind of stuff.

  9. You gotta be fucking kidding me. You can’t seriously tell me with a straight face that this make someone feel offended.

Why are people so goddamn soft these days? They are the same sjw people that b*tch and moan about every single goddamn thing others do and then making others apologize for even breathing.

If someone got “offended” by this, then you need to go outside and get a life, you aren’t ready to face for the real world.

  10. How can progressives have progress if they can’t acknowledge where we’ve progressed from.
That was the whole point of G&W as a fighter in general, to be out of place in a modern game and highlight how far games have come and part of how far games have come is moving past certain attitudes towards Indians.

If anything, because G&W is a protagonist, then the Indian was going to be a protagonist this time around.

  11. Disgusting. As a video game collector, i own the original G&W games. Having this removed is a step back for humanity, are people that easily offended? these battles took place so long ago, that the people have no right to complain. the people crying about the feather arent even going to be playing the game, or at least the people who initially brought it up. nintendo is weaker than i thought, did they think this would affect sales? this better not happen again. i will let it slide only this time

  12. I hate this cultural appropriation bullshit. Let’s stop having stuff like chinaware, anime, manga, dreamcatchers, Samsung, Sony products, Sony movies, Nintendo, Square Enix, Capcom, etc all removed from the United States of America. It’s cultural appropriation to be letting all of us white people play with Japanese video games, watch Japanese anime, Korean anime, Japanese music, etc etc.

So why stop at a feather? Find out who all the white owners are of your products, Nintendo, and send a patch that shuts our 3DSs, Switchs, Wii Us, Wiis, 2DSs, etc down and bricks them. After all, we’re racists for owning your products since we aren’t Japanese and we’re appropriating your culture.

  13. I don’t understand why the European market should also have this removed. We don’t have any native Americans in our territories (or so few that don’t count). In fact we don’t give a … about the reference. This is an America issue which should not affect the European market. For donkey years Nintendo defend their policy about region locked and why some games were not release in some market by explaining to us that each territory should be treated differently cause they are different market and culture…. strangely enough it does not apply here…..

    1. Well uhm uhh the Native Americans first started uhm uhh getting attacked by uhm well by uhh European settlers so uhhh you uhhh well should have to uhm uhh ya’know suffer as well as uhmmm well us in well uhmm ‘Murica as you guys well uhh started the process of uhm uhh eliminating the Native uhm uhh Americans. You uhh are uhm uhh just as guilty uhm uh, Europe.

lol And that’s how SJWs will mental gymnastic their way into defending the removal of it in the European version of Smash Ultimate.

      1. geez, if I understand the logic, then everything that maybe offensive to the British (for those who don’t know their history, the USA used to be a British colony) should then be also ban in the North America market… There is way more British in north America than there is native American in Europe…… Anyway, the decision to remove it from the European version still baffle me…

        1. It’s probably not just America and Europe but other places, too, like Japan. I want to assume it’s just Nintendo being cheap & lazy and removing it from the original copy instead of removing it from individual regional copies with a patch.

  14. Unbelievable… Seriously, who was the design hurting?

What are they going to do next? Cry foul at Street Fighter because T. Hawk- who wears traditional Native American attire- can be K.O.d by Guile- an American military man with a US Flag tattooed on his arm?

    1. Well fuck! You forgot Balrog. They better remove him from the game or make him become a good guy. After all, he’s a lackey of M. Bison, a white guy, so it’s low-key racism as he’s essentially Bison’s slave.

        1. Speaking of subservient women, these people better not go see the next Wonder Woman film. She was created by a guy obsessed with BDSM so one of her weaknesses early on was being bound by rope. That’s, like, hate for women in someone’s mind.

  15. lol I am not even going to try to address what it is in these comments. All I’ll say is that Native Americans have been one of the most poorly-treated populations in the world, and we should all educate ourselves about how this oppression continues even today before crying about how this change is a symptom of the decline of human civilization.

    1. Also consider this: The problem was not simply the representation of native american stereotypes, but the unnecessary celebration of a super racist old game.

      1. I don’t get the issue. Lots of cultures threw fire to burn down their enemies’s homes and stuff. It’s not like Native Americans were exempt from doing it as I’m pretty sure some did do it, especially after seeing the enemy do it. I get having an issue with a stereotype that is made up but having an issue with one based on actual fact is stupid.
