Mario Kart Tour Played In Portrait, Tracks Mainly From Previous Games

People have begun to share details of Mario Kart Tour on social media. Codes for the Android beta version were dispatched earlier this week and those in the beta have started downloading the app.

The game is played in portrait mode rather than landscape mode and the majority of tracks seem to be from previous titles on the long running Mario Kart franchise.

Here’s an incomplete list of characters who appear in Mario Kart Tour:

  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Peach
  • Daisy
  • Toad
  • Toadette
  • Rosalina
  • Waluigi
  • Baby Peach
  • Baby Daisy
  • Baby Rosalina
  • Metal Mario
  • Larry
  • Lemmy
  • Ludwig
  • Dry Bones
  • Dry Bowser

Each race has two laps and the characters have their own individual items to use in each race. The karts accelerate automatically so you are in charge of steering your way around the various tracks. More information should emerge soon once more people download the beta software.

  1. Sounds terrible. I guess Ninty is going full hog with mobile games business models. But hey, if it helps finance real console games for them… I’m not complaining. I’m not looking for a meaningful game on my cell and they seem to outsource for most of these games so… No loss on my end.

    1. Exactly my thoughts on how this game sounds and mobile games in general. I honestly can’t think of any game that would make me interested to play on a phone. I imagine this one will make lots of money as Mario Kart is a very popular brand

    2. My son and I were lucky enough to get to be part of the closed beta test. It’s not perfect but we both enjoy it, thoroughly. Ultimately it’s a mobile game w/user accessibility as Nintendo’s top priority (profit a close second…gacha…smh). I will not likely ever spend to play. I, however, will likely play from time to time. It is a fun little romp.

    1. It’s a free game. Of course there has to be a catch. You could probably pay to remove stamina, but you don’t have too.

  2. I hope that this game isn’t taking up resources that would otherwise be spent on a new Mario Kart. MK Wii came out in 2008, MK 7 came out in 2011, and MK 8 came out in 2014. We’re due a brand new mainline, but we’re only getting rereleases and mobile games. I want a Mario Kart with a course maker and more environment interactions. Preferably also with a new kind of single player mode.

  3. I have a feeling this is the game that’s getting the remake of the original Wario Stadium. Rip.

  4. whatever. I think gamers shouldn’t overthink this issue too much. smartphone games are there to stay and in some cases they can be a really nice thing to have. But in cases like the Diablo-shitstorm, some people just love to hate on things. things they couldn’t really care less. If you aren’t into smartphone gaming, why bother so much?

I understand it seems like wasted ressources on something where they could have used them to make the next real MK game better. But then again, if this earns them 10 times the money, just go on. I can totally live with companies using smartphone games to go crazy on microtransactions, lootboxes and so on, especially after gaming on smartphones can’t be healed from this anyways. Looking at Elder Scrolls Blades being basically a game about collecting chests and considering that might be the biggest state of the art smartphone-production, I don’t really think traditional console gaming is going anywhere.

  5. Here are some things I found out

The list stops at Dry Bowser, but there have been more characters confirmed. Those being Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Wendy, Morton, Iggy, Donkey Kong, and Koopa Troopa.

    There are options for 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, and 200cc

Tracks include Choco Island 2 and Mario Circuit (SNES), Koopa Troopa Beach (MK64), Dino Dino Jungle (MKDD), Luigi’s Mansion (MKDS), and Toad/Mario Circuit (MK7). Idk why there are two Mario circuits, maybe there might be one but as of right now idk.

Items included in the beta include single red shells, single green shells, single bananas, single mushrooms, blue shell, bullet bill, super horn, and the return of the Mega Mushroom. Coins have been found on the track, just not as an item yet.

Last thing: It seems that there is a mode that lets you have 3 item slots. When you get 3 of the same item, it goes into an item frenzy. It gives you an invincibility star glow on ur character and surrounds you with the items you get (3 green shells will turn into 6 green shells, for example) for an unspecified amount of time.

    That’s all from me.

      2. Thank you addy

I got all this info from other sources, as I don’t have the game myself.

  6. I finally got to see gameplay, and it being in portrait looks really… bad. Who knows, could be good.

    1. to be fair to the game (which I don’t think online people will be fair to it) it’s a beta test for the game. Most likely in an update, they will address this problem. I think its only portrait because you to drag ur finger on the screen to move, and maybe they could have some controls on the bottom like you are playing a racer.

      1. Yeah, I suppose. Personally I think that the most precise and comfortable controls would be tilt controls, so I’m guessing Nintendo will add those later.

  7. The people complaining about microtransactions are the same people complaining that paying $10 for Super Mario Run is far more expensive than paying games in microtransactions. I would rather pay one singular price than having to pay $1,000’s on one game per day/week/month. Also its not expensive to pay one singular price on a mobile game.

  8. Seems to be nothing more than a recycled cash grab. Plus, a racing game in portrait mode? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard all day. Literal garbage.

  9. The problem with mobile games to me is that they are usually watered down versions of existing great games.

Besides a few gems, most app games either try to suck all your money or just aren’t worth the high price tag.

I would rather play Mario kart Wii or Mario kart 8 deluxe then open my credit card and shell out tons of money towards a watered down Mario kart game on my phone. And that’s all it wants- money.

  10. Not sure if MyNintendo knows, but there are screens, videos and impressions floating all over.

  11. I hope Nintendo gets those mobile players all broke so they have many billions to spend on real games. Milk them like cows, because that’s what they are!
