The Pokemon Company has confirmed today via their official website that the upcoming Pokemon Sword & Shield games for the Nintendo Switch will utilise the new Pokemon HOME application. Previously The Pokemon Company had used Pokemon Global Link but that functionality is being handeled now by The Pokemon HOME application. Here’s the details direct from the site:

“Thank you for using our products and services. We have some information regarding Pokémon Global Link (PGL) and the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games, which will release for Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019.

For Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, services equivalent to the current Rating Battle and Online Competitions are planned to be supported. However, PGL will not support Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

These battles and Online Competitions can be enjoyed in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield using just the connectivity features of Nintendo Switch* Game Sync will not be required for these new games. For more information on Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, visit the official site.

In addition, functionality from PGL to view services such as Rankings, Distribution Regulations, and the events calendar will be provided through Pokémon HOME, which is planned for release on iOS and Android devices in early 2020.

Please look forward to more details about Pokémon HOME coming soon!”

*Nintendo Switch Online membership and Nintendo Account required for online play. Internet access required for online features. Terms and conditions apply. Visit Nintendo.com/switch-online for more information.

  1. Tbh I have no idea what that meant but then I’ve only ever used the online parts of Pokémon games sparingly so not too familiar with how it all works.

    1. Basically the switch itself allows for easy connection while storing ranking without the need of a bunch of other applications. So now that most of the features are built directly into the game, they can just put the small remaining random things into one phone app =b for when you can’t connect your switch Online and want to check certian stats and junk

  2. I’m ok with this. Too bad pokebank is not coming to Nintendo Switch that people are expecting to be. But I understand some people want to transfer there old Pokemon from past generation but now it won’t happen this time witch is sad.

    1. You will be able to import Pokémon from Bank and Go to Home and send Pokémon available in Galar to Sword and Shield.

The goal of Home appears to be your hub world between all of your games where you can show off your collection from all of your games and trade Pokemon. They’ve announced it might include some sort of interactivity.

      1. Yeah I just heard about the interactivity part but the other part you said about import your Pokémons from Bank and Go to Home and Pokémons available in Galar to Sword and Shield. Yeah i almost forgot about that on what Mr Masuda said during E-3. I remember he said that the new game don’t have the compatibility to used Poke Bank and let people transfer there pokemon from 2 generations since he notice that many people are worried that they will lose there pokemon that they have from their past generations like X and Y and Sun and Moon. But now, people don’t have to worried anymore.

  3. Do we NEED a Nintendo Online subscription just to USE Pokemon Home/store and MAINTAIN our Pokemon!?

Because if I have to lose my Pokemon forever because Nintendo isn’t getting MY $20 a year, heads are going to roll.

What’s next, a $20 subscription just to boot up your already purchased games? Because that would be a devil’s move right there.

      1. NOS is far more than Pokemon Bank. You only had to pay $5 a year just to transfer Pokemon, not keep them in a box until a select few were usable in the next generation. NOS wants $3-4 minimum per month. For a year, Nintendo/GameFreak wants 4x what Bank charged.

  4. When I think about it; I don’t really mind them getting rid of an old program and replace it with a new one as long as it either does what the previous program could do and then some… but knowing video game companies; they seem to replace them with something that does LESS like when Club Nintendo got replaced with My Nintendo or when Microsoft Movie Maker got replaced with Video Editor.

They had potential to improve upon their original programs but they never take advantage of it. So I’m expecting that despite how good Pokemon Home sounds on paper, it’s likely going to squander its potential to the point where people want Global Link back.

  5. If we need Pokemon Home to transfer our Pokemon from PokeBank to it to Sword/Shield (what few Pokemon that are even in the game, anyway), please tell me Pokemon Home will have an app on the Switch itself. If I have to get a damn smartphone (or borrow my wife or kid’s) to do this transfer, I’m gonna be very annoyed.
