If you haven’t parted with your money for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and you are planning to purchase the forthcoming Pokemon Sword & Shield then do not worry as it seems that the game will feature in-game purchases for online features that would usually require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. This is what it says on the website:

I would imagine it will be an option to pay for Pokémon and other items distributed by mystery gift, since you would need an online account to get those.
Knowing their current choices, I wouldn’t doubt it. They already proved they’re idiots, so why not prove further by adding them? It would not be surprising. Would prompt Nintendo buy more shares in Pokemon though, and save the franchise before they add them.

Honestly…as much crap as I give Pokemon S+S, I actually think this is pretty good. If you’re someone that loves playing Pokemon Online but doesn’t really care about the online for other games, this is a suitable option.
Of course, it better be cheaper than the full paid membership.
