Nintendo expects Switch to have a longer life cycle than previous systems

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has reiterated to investors that he expects the company’s best-selling Nintendo Switch system to have a longer life cycle than previous video game systems from the company. As with previous devices Nintendo has many ways to flesh it out. With two Switch systems currently available and a rumoured improved model coming in the future it seems feasible.

The Nintendo Switch will soon have been on sale for three years. We feel it is a different kind of console than the ones we have previously released. In addition to the flagship Switch model, we also released the Nintendo Switch Lite which can only be played as a handheld. This allows the user to choose a console to fit their lifestyle.

We are also looking into the current market and feel there are many different ways to think about future console development. On the other hand, software is also very important. So in the short term, while the Nintendo Switch install base continues to expand, we must place a lot of focus on that. By placing our main focus on the Nintendo Switch, we feel we can have a very different (longer) hardware life cycle than previous Nintendo consoles.

  1. I love new hardware. Expensive of course, but new hardware generation always makes the most hype and excitement — especially from Nintendo imo. I don’t find this kind of news that positive to read. I hope at least they upgrade the Switch so we can reduce/eliminate some of the worst lags in some of the titles; even hope for some 60FPS updates.

  2. Wasn’t the original plan for the Switch to be upgradable for this very purpose (extending the life cycle)? Like, just making it more and more powerful? Or am I thinking about something else? Unless that’s what the rumored Switch Pro will eventually be.

    1. I don’t think they consider a “New 3DS” or “Switch Pro” as a new generation, it’ll probably labeled as the same generation of the original Switch.

  3. If that’s the case, then there is *no* excuse to not have a new F-Zero on it. Seriously, when will my patience be rewarded?

In terms of tech, I do think Switch will stick around awhile before we see something new. I’m not even sure I could answer the question “where do we go from here?”

  4. I always love new hardware and new technology. Nintendo is still trying to never make any mistakes again like the Wii U system they having trouble with. The only thing they are talking about is trying to create something more new and fresh for there future consoles and games.

  5. I’m happy with my new Lite.

It feels really great in the hand, it has that matte finish like the latest DS system ( remember the matte black finish ? )

The A,B buttons feels much better, great D-pad.
    Screen is little bit better.

I really don’t need a PRO, for what ? I can buy a PS4 if I want that kinda expierence on a Tv.

So much games to finish at the moment.

Smash, Xenoblade, a new Xeno remake this year, Animal crossing. Finishing Tropical freeze 100%,
Finishing astral chain, play more Mario Maker. trying out new Botw Hard mode. Finishing Splatoon DLC,
Finishing Links awakening, Finish Pokemon Shield, trying to get Mario odyssey all stars, Finishing Fire emblem.
beating Mario kart 200 CC al, trophies, getting the golden glider. Become better at smash, …

Buying Yoshi game, maybe try Dragon Quest, by Bayonetta 3

Like seriously I really need a second life to finish all this stuff.

Do people like Metaldave64 crying for a PRO actually play games or they just want drama ?

  6. They’ve said this multiple times since the Switch was released so is not a surprise statement. What is surprising to me is the number of people who have continued to ignore this ‘straight from the horses mouth’ information and talk about a Switch 2 or other new console. This statement says to me that there will be at least two more versions of the base Switch, one of which will definitely be an upgraded version akin to the ‘Pro’ that people have speculated on. There is also likely to be a Switch Lite ‘XL’ at some point. I personally welcome this because I love the Switch and have invested heavily in it in terms of games and peripherals and the longer I have to enjoy all that with the console being active the better.

  7. To all these people complaining because “New consoles bring me hype” SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP! I’m so damned poor. Give me like another decade of this generation, then I’ll have the money for new consoles. Personally I hope Xbox series X and PS5 get delayed at least to 2021. I know they said 2020, but considering how we’ve still seen kinda jack shit from them regarding either console besides the same techno gobbledegook they’ve been giving us forever, I really think a delay to 2021 isn’t off the table.

    1. They’re not going to keep letting Nintendo have the market all to themselves, both are watching Nintendo eat their lunch, and want to get in on the spending that consumers are doing on Nintendo products right now. It’s a business, nothing more, nothing less.

    2. Hm, no. Not happening. Things need to involve, with or without you.

While i would love to buy a gaming hardware and get games for it forever that’s not how business work. They need to improve and innovate to keep the cash coming.

If your situation is SO bad, you could… just stick with your current console? My 3DS still works great and i play it from time to time, but that doesn’t mean i want Nintendo to hold back on the Switch. You don’t need to buy a console at launch, buy it later when it does have more games and a more accessible price

  8. Good god this is going to be the longest generation in history! It started in 2012, and if Switch goes 10 years to make it longer than 3DS, we’re talking 2027, meaning a full 15 years on the worldwide market! No generation lasted that long! The closest comes the PS2/GC/XB/DC generation which began (worldwide) in 1999 and ended in 2013, 14 years later. All hail the PS4/XBO/WiiU/Switch generation, set to be the longest generation in history!!

      1. Switch is the same generation as the Wii U.
Plus the Wii U came out before PS4/X1.
