Metacritic users vote for best game of 2020

Metacritic users have voted for their favourite video games of 2020 and it’s a fairly solid list. Indie darling Hades was ranked at No.4 and the best-selling entry in the Animal Crossing franchise, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, was voted in at No.8. Bethesda’s gruesome Doom Eternal landed at No.5. Here’s Metacritic users favourite games of last year across multiple platforms.

  1. The Last of Us Part II – 10,194
  2. Ghost of Tsushima – 2,079
  3. Cyberpunk 2077 – 1,691
  4. Hades – 1,510
  5. Doom Eternal – 1,062
  6. Final Fantasy VII Remake – 1,044
  7. Demon’s Souls – 818
  8. Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 701
  9. Ori and the Will of the Wisps – 694
  10. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – 615
  11. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – 596
  12. Half-Life Alyx – 584
  13. Persona 5 Royal – 487
  14. Resident Evil 3 – 463
  15. Nioh 2 – 354

“It wasn’t even close: PS4 exclusive The Last of Us Part II was the favorite 2020 game of Metacritic users by a landslide. We don’t compile game critic top 10 lists, but TLOS2 was the #2-ranked game of 2020 by Metascore. Our highest-scoring game of the year, Persona 5 Royal, placed just 13th with our users. And, yes, you’ll notice that Cyberpunk 2077 managed to rank third in our user voting. We’ll assume that all of those votes were for the PC edition.”

  1. It’s complete bullshit that TLOU 2 won over amazing games like Doom, FF7R and Ghosts of Tsushima. TLOU 1 had incredible characters, good story and great visuals. The sequel has only one of those qualities. The game was simply not good at all and I would never replay it. It just boggles my mind how out of touch journalists are just because the game was woke.

    1. This is popular vote, not journalism. Wake up from your dream and look what is going on in the world. It’s clear that the game’s user score was nothing more than an attacked by the same type of coward brainwashed mob who attacked the capitol.

      1. Are you really going to make a ridiculously slanderous comparison like that? So people who think a game wasn’t so good are terrorists now? You need to take a really good look at your moral compass my good person.
Did it ever occur to you that perhaps the game didn’t have good user review because some people thought it wasn’t very good? Just a thought.

      1. Ironic that you believe in the existence of organized mobs when it comes to the game’s user score but not when it comes to the game of the year survey.
And are you really implying that only Trump supporters can dislike the game? So everyone who disliked a game must have a specific worldview? Sounds pretty intolerant of you.

      2. The brainwashed exist on both the left and right. They are both highly cynical and very delusion on the far fringes. Games are an outlet among many from day to day work and stress. Politics should be left out of games unless the politics are within the framework of design. This is a hobby that should never be tainted by the orange vile evils of mob mentality.

        F=ma.

    1. I don’t think it’s faked, it’s just false statistics, like those “99% of all women recommend this product” statements in commercials. For example, most people who played Animal Crossing are casuals and don’t even know metacritic in the first place. On the other hand, TLOU has been played by many people and even if only a small portion actually liked the game, that’s still alot of votes compared to less famous but better games.

  2. To explain the result…

Its a bulk volume vote. The game that had the most players will by definition have a larger pool of players by volume to convince to vote for that game. The way the voting is structured, it wouldn’t matter if only 1% of people who play TLOU 2 actually enjoyed the game, it would still beat out in voting games with only a fraction of its score. On top of that, while everyone who enjoyed the game as their votes condensed in that choice, the people who hated TLOU 2 had their votes spread amongst a dozen choices.

TLOU winning doesn’t show the game is really loved, and it also doesn’t show its really hated. It shows that more people played it.

As a side note, I’m absolutely certain that timetowakeup equally condemned the left wing riots that took place all year long. He seems like an honorable chap. I’m sure he wouldn’t just be complaining this time specifically because the criminal activity was by a group he didn’t like.
