RPG studio Mistwalker is working on a “dark fantasy” game

Xbox 360 JRPG, Lost Odyssey

Another prominent video game developers who was asked about their plans for 2023 by Famitsu is, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the acclaimed head of RPG studio, Mistwalker. Mr. Sakaguchi jokingly told the publication that he thought it was going to be the year he retired, but he says “I decided to try to give this another go.” He said that he and the rest of the team are hard at work on developing what’s been described as a “dark fantasy” game. Platforms have not been mentioned and it seems as though the project could be in the early stages of development. Mistwalker is the studio behind such games as Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and Fantasian.

Mistwalker’s, Hironobu Sakaguchi, plans and ambitions for 2023:

Ambitions for 2023: “I thought I was going to retire (laughs), but I decided to try to give this another go…”

Status Update: “I’ll never stop playing Final Fantasy XIV. Meet me in Eorzea. I also started writing the scenario for a new title yet to be announced. It will be a dark fantasy.”

  1. Sigh. I know it’s probably a mobile game but I’ll dream that Sakaguchi decided to leave us with one last story, a final fantasy if you will, before he retires…

  2. With any luck, this “dark” game will be Last Story 2 that follows Sir Therius as he tries to rid the corruption that plagues the empire’s knights. Maybe even a mini open world to explore.

That said, at this point, I’d be happy with just The Last Story getting an HD remaster. A new online mode that lets you & others explore the dungeons BEFORE fighting the boss (instead of just getting right into the boss battle) would be nice, but that wouldn’t happen with a remaster.

Pandora’s Tower could especially do with an HD remaster (due to a near game breaking glitch that stops you from accessing the penultimate boss, if you don’t know the trick to get past said glitch) but that’s Ganbarion’s game.
