Rumour: Amazon has reportedly bought Tomb Raider franchise in $600 million deal

In a new rumour doing the rounds Amazon has apparently coughed up $600 million for the Tomb Raider franchise which would include games, movies, TV rights, merchandise etc. The deal was apparently recently finalised by Embracer Group which owns the Tomb Raider IP after purchasing a number of the western studios formally owned by Square Enix. If it turns out to be true, then it would be Amazon’s second big purchase after acquiring the rights to the Lord of the Rings series. Amazon has yet to confirm this.

“Embracer Group just sold their ‘Tomb Raider’ rights to Amazon for a deal that we can exclusively reveal as being approximately a 600 Million overall package making it Amazon’s second biggest purchase after purchasing the television rights for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’. Therefore, this puts into perspective the cost and prices that Embracer maybe looking for.”

  1. Ok thank God, I have the intuition to check sources on stuff like this instead of just believing it.

So if you look into the article that spawned this headline, the original article is about lord of the rings, not tomb raider. But buried in the article it says

“Embracer Group just sold their ‘Tomb Raider’ rights to Amazon for a deal that we can exclusively reveal as being approximately a 600 Million overall package making it Amazon’s second biggest purchase after purchasing the television rights for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’.”

This is unverified and doesn’t even mention Video games at all. I assuming it means just television and movies.

I’ve been on this website for a long time, but this is bad reporting

    1. It says RUMOR big and bold and says “apparently coughed up $600 million for the Tomb Raider “FRANCHISE which would include games, movies, TV rights, merchandise etc.” My god, learn to read.

      1. Telling me to read when you didn’t read my comment. I just went to the source and read what the website was reporting on

““Embracer Group just sold their ‘Tomb Raider’ rights to Amazon for a deal that we can exclusively reveal as being approximately a 600 Million overall package making it Amazon’s second biggest purchase after purchasing the television rights for ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’.”

What your quoting is MyNintendoNews which did not break the story but reported on the story, and in the original article it doesn’t even mention video games. Click on that little Source button (its red and underlined) underneath the MyNintendoNews article

This is actually how fake rumors get spread
