Rumour: Disney and Square Enix working on Smash Bros-inspired game called Disney Domination

Disney has apparently teamed up with Square Enix to develop a new Smash Bros-inspired video game which is called, Disney Domination. The roster reportedly features up to 55 characters at launch spanning multiple Disney franchises which are spread across a single-player campaign that features 60 stages. Disney Domination has apparently been in development since 2018 and started a passion project but has swelled with a reported team of 240 developers. The launch window for Disney Domination is the second half of 2024. It should be noted that this is a rumour and neither companies have announced the project.

  • Disney Domination will feature up to 55 characters at launch, spread across a single-player campaign that features 60 stages.
  • There will be ‘so many’ online modes, including 12-player online battles, voice chat battles, ‘Disney Dominion’, missions, and more.
  • There will be a ‘Lounge’ in Disney Domination where players can go to share custom stages and other content.
  • It will boast a unique art style that ‘looks like something out of Unreal Engine 5’, and it’s supposed to be ‘edgy’.
  • Reportedly, it’s being developed by Square Enix, but that’s totally unconfirmed.

  1. This just sounds like a weird fusion of smash 4/ brawl like why does it have to be edgy, no is gonna take it seriously and people are going to meme it death just like brawl 💀.

  2. Failed before development even started, people who love smash already have smash.
Fighting games are already niche as it is and people who play Smash style fighting game make up even smaller portions of that niche percentage with little to no growth in the future.
Every single smash copycat have already flopped or on thir way into irrelevancy due to lacking features and zero patience from anyone willing to give said copycats to play catchup to most features already available in smash, plus smash has introduced characters from other totally different companies fans wanted for years that will never be seen in other fighting games again.
Creating a smash clone is pointless and a waste of money and time in my books and the only way to even compete is if you are capcom, snk, netherrealms, bandainamco or any of these other already established fighting game companies and manage to get every single other major fighting game company to agree to combine all of their characters into a smash clone, example SFxTekkenxVFxGuiltyGearxDoAxKoFxMK ect ect.
Unless that happens all smash clones are bound for failure as sad as that may sound, or you would need game features that blow smash out of the water and tbh that isn’t happening because developers today lack creativity and innovation while publishers are nolonger willing to take any financial risks and only stick with safe copy and paste investments.

    1. Platform fighters are very viable. Gamers just generally aren’t smart enough to understand HOW and WHY Smash Bros is so fun. That’s why you see all those nonsense requests from fans.

Then there’s the people who think they can just make a game that appeals to the competitive audience (you know… the people who don’t ever buy knew games but just pirate and mod a 22 year old game) and you get something like the Nick game that was completely charmless.

It seems like Multiversus might have gotten closer to the mark but I honestly don’t know as I haven’t played it.

No, to say that it’s impossible to compete with Smash Bros is kind of ridiculous. Even it hasn’t perfected or innovated much on it’s own formula so the opportunity is there. The only thing that you might say is impossible to compete with is the IP that Smash Bros can use. Unfortunately, it’s content has become too bloated and little less curated so… yeah, someone could totally make a platform fighter to rival Smash.

It… probably won’t happen though. And, if it does and it’s Disney and SE making it… it’s going to be a free-to-play nightmare.

  3. If this is true, it will fail, because not everything is workable or usefzl for a smash game. It was a miracle, that Smash Bros became a success, but in like the WB verson, this won’t work, at least for me. On the other hand, Disney is desperate after all the failures they made and tries everything that sticks to the wall to make money. Sadly too late.
