SEGA considering Sonic “reboots and remakes”

SEGA is currently very busy. a third update for Sonic Frontiers is coming soon, new episodes of Sonic Prime have recently premiered on Netflix, and Sonic Superstars is releasing later this year. Nevertheless, SEGA is always looking to the future. The latest example of this is no exception.

SEGA President and Chief Operations Officer Yukio Sugino recently spoke to Famitsu about Samba de Amigo: Party Central, which is supposed to release on the Nintendo Switch next month, as well as Sonic Superstars. At one point, the topic changed to reboots and remakes of their IPs. Eventually, Sugino said that “‘Sonic’ is also SEGA’s signature IP, and in parallel with [Sonic Superstars], we are considering reboots and remakes”.

It is worth noting that the are only considering reboots and remakes, so neither of those are actually in development for the time being. Nevertheless, fans of older Sonic the Hedgehog games such as Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 may be interested in this news.

    1. I think a ian flynn reboot would be great.
The series has never made sense in terms of settings as nothing is explained. Ive always leaned towards the two world/multiple worlds setting (humans in one and animal/eggmans in the others) but some say its all one big world and that sounds dumb asf.

      1. To be fair, I think SEGA or Sonic Team never keep things where it was suppose to be and nothing is fully set in stone when it comes to the lore. As for the humans and animals worlds living together as one, It doesn’t make any sense for both species living in the same world. I like it better when both species live in sperate worlds. I really don’t know why SEGA decided to make changes for that type of element by changing the aspect of the franchise lore for not letting humans being in their own worlds instead of sharing the same world with Sonic. It still doesn’t any sense because of it.

        1. Yea, definitely not set in stone. They wanna make it like mario where events dont really matter cause new adventure = new game but that doesnt work for sonic. He has too much plot and references everything.

I just want ian flynn to soft reboot the series and start from after sonic 06 or unleashed.

and same. Different worlds is the best way.

      2. How about actually MERGING the two universes, without the consequence of freezing time.

That way, both Sonic X (concept wise, not “the show’s exact events are canon”-wise) and the popular TailsTube won’t contradict each other.

Sonic X gives us an idea of of how they got to Sonic Adventure (and how humans weren’t a thing during the Genesis days until then), while TailsTube explain that the humans are still relevant to Sonic’s universe and where they are in that universe.

  1. Hhonestly I don’t want a remake of any of the games. Tthe only ones I can see them doing is the Adventure games, aand thhose wouldn’t feel right without some of the jank.

  2. You fools already proved you couldnt make a modern game anybody thought was better than the originals and now you want to remake and reboot them!!!??? You arogant smoothbrains!!!!

  3. I guess I might as well go ahead and reboot and remake those old Rembrant paintings for a modern audience since i’m a painter.

  4. Im a lot more interested in modern Hacks of the old games. So much more exciting than making a classic look like a slick antiseptic no blemishes cold thing. In fact, if they bought the rights to the hacks and made a compilation, Id be ecstatic about it.

  5. Not sure if they could do a good remake of their older titles. In the first place their games are hit or miss and a remake celebrates a classic game, if its bad you’re unintentionally trashing the game rather than praising it. Secondly, most of their games attempt to target nostalgia from their fans, meaning a remake is only retreading gameplay and visuals of games more recently released.

Remakes are great for other long time franchises, heck I’ve been wanting a Mario 64 remake for a while now. But Sonic might be one of the worst series to tackle as most of the best Sonic games already are similar in many ways to the classics to the point where they’re mostly just new games attempting to recapture the 90s magic for the 30th time.

  6. I’m not going to lie: I have mixed feelings on this statement.

On the one hand I would love it if they actually went through and remade the Adventure games (if they actually did a proper job), but on the other I am concerned they would mess it up big time.

Honestly, I think a lot of people will be satisfied if they just ported Adventure 1&2 to the switch

  7. I swear if they remake sonic adventure and use Rogers voice I…..will buy it preowned at 15 dollars and use japanese audio. Miss me with that lol

  8. Adventure and Adventure 2 are games that would be superb targets for a remake. They are beloved games with a lot of heart in them, but are also undeniably flawed. Well-made remakes could bring these games to a whole new generation, and elevate those games to the fullness of their potential. But I don’t trust that Sega could do a good job with them for a minute, so probably just best it never happens.

    1. What if another Mania-inspired developer handles the remakes, while staying faithful to the engines that make those games great in the first place (like how Sonic Mania flawlessly recreates the gameplay of the Genesis/SEGA CD games.
