The excellent Metroid Dread took us all by surprise and was a fantastic and polished experience, Spanish site Game Reactor caught up with the talented developers over at Mercury Steam which is the team behind Samus Returns, Metroid Dread, Castlevania Lord of Shadows, and more. MercurySteam CEO, Enric Álvarez, told the site that working alongside Nintendo on Metroid Dread was a “game-changing experience” for them all and that they have nothing but praise to lavish on the Japanese company. Here’s what was said:
“It was an amazing experience working with the best and trying to do our best to reach Nintendo’s very high level. It was heaven to work with them. We worked very closely with the Japanese team, meeting every week and visiting very often. And it was amazing. It was a game-changing experience for us.”
“And then the product, well, both products, Samus Returns and Dread,” he continues, “were very, very well received. And Dread was the best-selling Metroid game ever, even ahead of Metroid Prime. So, that’s right, I couldn’t be happier.”
“We understand each other perfectly. I think it’s fair to say that, over time, we became friends. They are very talented and hard-working people. They have a work ethic that is second to none. And they’re open to accepting new ideas and trying them out. We were also hungry to make our own mark on the franchise. And we never stopped suggesting and proposing ideas. And many of them ended up in the final product. So we are very proud of the collaboration between Nintendo and us. And, yes, as I said, one of the best development experiences we could ever dream of.”
Thanks to Greatsong1 for the news tip!

I love Metroid dread, it’s certainly a polished game with nice tight controls, I’m not so drawn into the emmi idea, but overall the game is great. Hope they are working on another title for the 2d Metroid genre
Dread is an incredible game. Loved every minute
While it was well made there was nothing new or genre redefining like the old ones or what we expect from Metroid series.
“There was nothing new”
That’s just objectively wrong.
