Rumour: Best Buy apparently dropping physical media in 2024

A rumor is currently circulating online that the popular North American retailer Best Buy will no longer stock physical media such as games, Blu-ray discs, DVDs, and CDs from 2024. Physical sales at the retailer could stop from the first quarter of next year, which would be a major blow for gamers and collectors. If the move from Best Buy proves to be true, then other stores could follow suit. As we all know, digital is now the prominent form of game sales, presumably due to the convenience of it. Best Buy has yet to announce the move, so it is currently marked as a rumour for now.

  1. Movies I can see, but I think physical video games are still pretty strong. Maybe within the next 5 – 10 years or so I’d say physical video games might not be sold in stores.

  2. I was coming in here to say BS at the top of my lungs, but the last few times I’ve been to best buy, they’re CD section is pretty much gone, the Video section is almost gone, and their game section has slowly thinning out. So I really wouldn’t doubt it, it could also just mean that they won’t stock physical IN store, and just have all of that ship from their warehouse 🤷 I wouldn’t doubt it though.

  3. I thought it was odd when Kmart stopped selling physical copies of games. They stopped selling Eshop cards, PSN cards and Xbox Marketplace cards … Soon after they filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. Going all digital probably wouldn’t be my 1st choice, if your account gets perma banned then you loose any and all digital purchases, but that’s the risk we take in this digital age. I’d assume consumers could just order physical copies online, as some won’t purchase games as digital.

  4. Physical in store not online.
Digital is not the prominent game purchases made at all. People pushing the digital trend always try and act like it is.
Physical will always be a thing and if taken away the game industry will greatly suffer from it. They are already failing with no new ideas coming out.

    1. The lack of creativity and ideas has nothing to do with the media format, what the hell are you even on about? You could even argue that digital games are the most creative games right now, and in the last decade. You know digital, the ones that lack a physical box.
