Miyamoto says Nintendo “would rather go in a different direction” with AI

In around a week from now, the Nintendo Museum will be officially opening at Kyoto, Japan. With the grand opening so close, Shigeru Miyamoto has been participating in interviews with various gaming outlets. We’ve already informed you of one he has done with Game Watch. However, there’s another interview he did with the New York Times.

In this interview, Miyamoto takes a brief moment to mention AI as an example of how Nintendo likes to do things differently from others. He said that “it might seem like we are just going the opposite direction for the sake of going in the opposite direction, but it really is trying to find what makes Nintendo special. There is a lot of talk about A.I., for example. When that happens, everyone starts to go in the same direction, but that is where Nintendo would rather go in a different direction”.

  1. All these tech companies investing in AI… I get the feeling the bubble will soon burst. It’s good to see Nintendo didn’t get sucked into the hype.

For the record, I’m not against generative AI at all. It could probably help automate a lot of the smaller tasks people don’t like to do but it’s never going to innovate creatively.

  2. As long as their art doesn’t have extra digits and other weird inconsistencies that make the consumer feel like they’re in a bad acid fever dream.

We need art editors for a reason. Maybe they can even use AI to future-proof the mortality of excellent voice talent.

I want to see AI done right, with humans still overseeing quality in the final product, instead of just treating such next-level technology as a taboo practice and throwing it away.

  3. Nintendo’s decision to explore its own creative path with AI highlights the company’s commitment to originality and player-focused innovation.
