Nintendo Museum limits merchandise sales due to scalping

Kyoto’s Nintendo Museum has officially opened its doors, and while it boasts some exhibits sure to excite even the most causal of the company’s fans, its gift shop is no slacker either- with keychains, pillows, and other novelties for visitors to take home with them.

But, as they say, “this is why we can’t have nice things.”

Scalpers on Mercari and eBay are selling items from the museum at exorbiant prices en masse, with listings flooding the online marketplaces less than a day from the museum’s opening.

In response, the official X page for the Nintendo Museum made an announcemnt:

When translated, it reads:

[Request to Customers] There will be a limit on the number of items available for sale at the Nintendo Museum Shop “Bonus Stage”.

-One per person

  • Game hardware keychain collection (6 types) 1983-1999
  • Game hardware keychain collection (7 types) 2000-2017
  • Hanafuda Phoenix
  • Hyakunin Isshu Phoenix
  • Neck strap & pass case Nintendo Museum
  • Cookie Pipe Super Mario Cookie Nintendo Museum

-Up to one of four types of cushions: 4 types of cushions (Family Computer Controller, Super Famicom Controller, Nintendo 64 Controller, Wii Remote)

-Magnet collection (7 types) (7 items or 1 box per person)

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Some of the comments on the post suggested that restricting the sale would in fact encourage more scalping, but Nintendo’s decision seems to be final for the time being.

  1. People probably wouldn’t give into this if they just sold some of this stuff online it’ll literally keep the scalpers from profiting and they can also share some of items at the remaining Nintendo stores in Japan, I’m still confuse on why it’s seems Nintendo underestimates their fan base when it comes to keeping things in stock, but they’ll probably lift the buying limit after a while though at least almost after a year when the hype dies down a bit

  2. I remember seeing a video of a scalper (since deleted) where he boasted of having sold a lot of consoles at full price and didn’t understand why he was being blamed for it because anyway people are ready to pay any price…
We see the level of this kind of individuals

  3. Oh gee, scalping. I wonder why.

Almost as if these EXCLUSIVE items are sold in a faraway part of the world, at the placethat has zero-interest expanding to Western territories, especially in North American territories.

Nintendo: Extra since God knows when.
