Insider Gaming: Nintendo Switch 2 expected June 2025, launch to have 3-phase plan

Video game journalist Tom Henderson is reporting on Insider Gaming that Nintendo has plans for a 3-phase launch for their upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console. Firstly the console is expected to launch in June 2025 and the majority of games available at launch will be first party Nintendo games. Nintendo will announce those said titles at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct next week, along with the console release date and pricing. The second phase is primarily aimed at third party developers and this is where it isn’t clear. Henderson reports that third party titles for the Nintendo Switch 2 are expected to launch between October 2025 – November 2025 and that third party developers will be sent Nintendo Switch 2 development kits in June. We can assume that some large third party developers like SEGA and Capcom will already have Switch 2 development kits. The third phase will be the Nintendo Switch 2 first party holiday lineup.

  1. So, according to this “journalist” Nintendo is going to release a console without third-party games and we will have to wait between 3 and 4 months to see some…? Knowing that IN ADDITION, he claims that the kits have not yet been distributed?!

Either he says anything or Nintendo is suicidal!

I’ll let you cross out the unnecessary mention…

    1. You, maybe, but that’s not the case for everyone…the lack of third-party games has harmed Nintendo more than once, you have to be naive to believe that they will be self-sufficient and backward compatibility is not an argument

  2. It’s an interesting concept and it might be their idea to try and spread demand for the console. June might be a “soft launch” for the hardware with games coming in force in the holiday season. In truth, if they launch alongside Mario Kart I still expect demand to outstrip supply.

  3. It doesn’t make sense whatsoever.

As much as the Switch was a success, its launch wasn’t that good. BotW having to carry it until MK8D came to lighten the load the next month, then after TWO months we had Splatoon 2. Plus one of the things people talked more about the Switch was about third parties finally coming back to support Nintendo, and they’re going to simply ditch it for, what, 4-5 months?

Sorry, but it doesn’t make sense. It was already reported that some third party developers already have S2 kits, on top of that. It even runs counter other leakers and insiders’ info about certain games.

So no, not putting stock on “video game journalist”.

    1. The immediate difference is that Wii U and 3DS failed to launch with even 1 killer app, the Switch 2 will likely launch with Mario Kart, literally their crown jewel.

The momentum for Switch 2 vs Wii U/3DS is very different. People want this console in a way they didn’t want those. Also, if you recall, the Switch didn’t have a huge library itself on release. You can sell on the strength of what people know is coming too.

  4. A little confused. So are not going to be allowed to use the n64, Sega, nes etc online service to play old games? I would’ve thought this is all the store regardless. 🤔
