Digital Foundry says Nintendo Switch 2 is “roughly a PS4 level” system

The knowledgeable tech-focussed team at Digital Foundry have been examining the Nintendo Switch 2 in their recent analysis and have concluded that Nintendo’s next generation system is roughly on par with Sony’s PlayStation 4 console. This means that we will be treated with a PlayStation 4 visual experience in the palm of our hands with third party titles such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Hogwarts Legacy and Cyberpunk 2077. The leaked specifications before the console was revealed hinted that we should expect around PlayStation 4 levels of hardware power. Nintendo Switch 2 launches 5th June.

“Broadly speaking its helpful to think of the Switch 2 as kind of like, you know, roughly a PS4 level in terms of comparable titles but it can do so much more in terms of storage, bespoke graphical features, possibly the CPU is also faster…” FF7 Remake: “The presentation is PS4 levels or there abouts. So broadly speaking quite comparable to PS4 if not actually a bit more of a favorable experience compared to PS4” Switch 2: “As a first generation ballpark, so to speak, PS4 is a very good comparison point I think.”

  1. I’m fine with that, we are obviously going to lose many 3rd party titles at like the half of the lifespan, but I buy Nintendo consoles because I wanna play Nintendo games, the third party titles are like little bonuses.

    1. I can’t help but feel disappointed by this, although I thought this would be the case.
Was at least hoping for comfortable ps4 pro levels.

        1. For £430 uk yes..
But there are other nuances in this –
          Tour price.
          Atrocious battery life
Upgrade costs and not actual physical switch 2 media

          1. Atrocious battery life? 2-6.5 hours is the standard on most of the powerful PC handhelds. You want more powerful handheld you can’t cheat physics. Also upgrade cost is exactly what Sony has been doing with their PS5 games, same with Bluray not containing all the game data so you need to download before you can play.

            1. 2hours.. I am going to assume thats what will be the most the system can do running Elden or Cyberpunk. If you’re happy with that, fine. For 430 quid, i aint.
Get your facts straight. There are a ton of free upgrades. Resi, Doom Eternal, Elden Ring.
But guess what, you can also buy the physical PS5 versions of those upgrades…

                  1. With how much complaining you’ve been doing these past few days it’s funny that you already set on not buying the Switch 2. Now i know that you’re just trolling from now on lol. No further reply from me.

                    1. I’m not trolling..I’m voicing an opinion that is shared across many.
The complaints are valid and again shared.

                    2. Nah, 450 dollars, 80 dollar games with less content than 70 dollar games, not fixing the joycons, making us pay for the tech demo. The Switch 2 is looking like ass and is gonna bomb severely.

The handheld space actually has competition now, so all Nintendo has is its first party games. People are starting to see their toxic, greedy business practices. There probably won’t be a Switch 3.

                  1. Lol. They are not. Stop spreading misinformation. Apparently I’m one of the only people that actually listened to what they said in the Direct and since then.

          2. In terms of Tflops, yeah, it’ll be similar. But it’s worth remembering that switch 2 has more than a decade’s worth of CPU and GPU advancements, much better RAM, solid state storage, DLSS AI upscaling that didn’t even exist when PS4 was designed. And that’s not even counting the additional control or mobility features PS4 never had.

Switch 2 is a far more capable system than PS4. Tflops are not the only metric, and these days, they’re among the least important metrics.

      1. This is false. Side by side game comparisons have put this closer to the ps5 than even the series s. So it’s better than series s

Hell, even PS4 pro didn’t have them. And in side by sides we’ve seen so far, Switch 2 games are nearly on par with PS5, visually.

Switch 2 is a far more capable system than PS4. Tflops are not the only metric, and these days, they’re among the least important metrics.

      3. look, it is not the same, the switch 2 value is superior to both ps4, and ps4, what would you prefer as of today? an iPhone 11 Pro Max or an iPhone 16e? that’s pretty much the same comparison, equivalent performance speaking. yet iPhone 11 Pro Max cannot do many new things that are related to the newest chips

      4. Given the games will be tuned to using SSD (sata type) read/write speeds, much newer CPU (that isnt anything like those garbage bargain bin Jaguar cpu’s that the PS4/XOne used at launch) and fairly modern GPU architecture access for compatibility with Mesh Shaders, access up to DLSS 4,modern decompression tech (similar to what PS5 uses) and such.

Pretty sure these features will put it around PS4 Pro while docked, if not better in specific cases.

    1. It does! According to CD Projekt Red, they had developed an unfinished game in the span of 7 months. And according to one of staff over at the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience in New York, the game runs at 40fps… 720p in portable, and 1080p in docked mode.

They’re planning to add DLSS onto the full sized 64GB game card once Cyberpunk 2077 for NS2 is finalized.

  2. It’s a bit of a stretch to say that when no one has the console yet.
And videos contradict them… Street Fighter Switch 2 is clearly somewhere between the PS4 and PS5 versions (and even with the PS5 version, the difference is minimal)

    1. I saw that video, I thought the Switch 2 version looked the worse, but that doesn’t mean it looked bad. Sadly Street Fighter is a Keycard game, as a physical collector I won’t buy those

      1. They never said it looked as good as the PS5 version, we’re talking about the fact that it outperforms a PS4 which is what DF are claiming it is comparable to. Or are you claiming that the Switch 2 version was the worst looking of all available versions? Might need a trip to the opticians or to wipe whatever screen you were viewing it on if that’s the case

      2. I will buy it regardless. Just because Street Fighter 6 is now coming to Nintendo Switch 2 with a Key Card doesn’t mean that I’m going to cancel it due to the fact it’s not a full sized game card.

In fact, the memory size in this game is more than 64GB. I wouldn’t mind buying a Key Card based title. All you need is an internet access (including NSO subscription) and a purchased game.

Even if I don’t have enough data, I can always purchase a MicroSD EXPRESS memory card.

      3. Lol. Are you kidding? You really thought Switch 2 version looked worse than PS4? It had more detail and higher resolution/FPS.

  3. They know near to nothing about the hardware, so their opinion is worth close to nothing. 🤷‍♂️

    1. Dude, how did you get that assumption of Sickr being negative based off this article? Nothing stated here is negative- Switch 2 being comparable to a PS4 is a good thing due to the portable nature of the system. Also, like it or not, Mario and Sonic are linked to the hip due to their shared legacies. Sonic and any other third party IP that is associated with Nintendo or rumored to be are newsworthy and should be included on this site. SEGA has ties with Nintendo; this is a Nintendo news site; when those two concepts collide, they will be reported on. Take your negativity and leave it elsewhere.

      1. He should at least tame or moderate the drop the price spammers. Leaving it alone shows some level of implicit support to those trolls.

    2. And every single thing you ever say is worth nothing. You all just hate on anybody that calls out or points negative things out about Nintendo.

      1. What’s wrong with you? 😆😆😆
Do they have access to the hardware yet, or are they just spitballing?

      2. There’s a big difference between denouncing real mistakes and spitting on something for free because it says “Nintendo” on it…
You’re just showing bad faith for Street Fighter 6 (among other things)

  4. PS4 can’t do 4K nor can it do 1080p at 120fps. This is more in line with the Pro but capable under the right developers to make it so the Switch 2 gets current console games rather than being a gen behind. Ultimately though who really cares? Tech specs aren’t games. It’s games which make a platform worth buying. 4K alone really opens up splitscreen gaming to be a lot more enjoyable. Especially since it’s 60fps at 4K. Mario Kart should make really good use of the display and make getting together with family and friends more fun.

  5. And I add these 2 truths: the ps4 is unable to do dlss and ray tracing so comparing the 2 makes no sense just with that alone

The xbox series s is “less powerful” than the xbox one x and yet, its games are more beautiful…

  6. I disagree since it is already doing things and has versions of games that were deemed too much for the PS4 to handle, such as Cyberpunk Ultimate and FF7 remake Intergrade.

  7. They don’t even have their hands on the hardware and are completely ignoring the DLSS and raytracing….

If people wanted proof that DF is a bunch of hacks, there you go. The day when people stop giving them the time of the day will be a happy one.

    1. Thankfully most of Nintendo target demographics don’t even know who or what tf DF is. The original Switch won’t be as successful as it is if we go by most of what DF videos said about its “performance” and “graphics” lol.

  8. Star Wars Outlaws, which PS4 couldn’t run and removed from the store, will be sold on Switch 2. Nvidia said that the graphics power is 10 times more than Switch(DLSS & ray tracing) and that’s about 4Tflop(PS4 1.84Tflop) on 16 bit. You can at least look at the Street Fighter 6 comparison videos, it’s better on Switch 2 than Series S.

    1. Digital Foundry did express surprise that Star Wars Outlaws will run on Switch 2 – they acknowledged that that would be a high level of performance against the PS4 benchmark. In fact, pretty much negative comment about Digital Foundry here is addressed in their video – they were not saying that Switch 2 is capped at PS4 performance and that’s it. They were giving an opinion on the rough order of magnitude of Switch 2 power based on what we’ve seen.

I get that people aren’t going to watch a whole nearly 2 hour video to understand their full perspective but maybe at least trust that their opinion is a bit more nuanced than the headline suggests.

    2. “Star Wars Outlaws, which PS4 couldn’t run and removed from the store”

That never happened. It was never on last gen systems.

    3. Why are you literally making stuff up in order to benefit your narrative? Outlaws on ps4? What? No. You can get just about anything to run on just about anything if you optimise enough and reduce fidelity enough. Just look at the switch versions of the fifa games. Just because its ON the platform doesn’t mean it’s going to provide an experience akin to the more powerful hardware out there. No matter how hard you cope about it. The switch 2 will probably be exactly what they said it will be. That’s just the reality of handheld hardware right now. The steam deck is comparable to the ps4 also, with a faster cpu. Valve have said they haven’t released a deck 2 yet because “the hardware upgrade to justify it just isn’t there yet”. So… makes sense to me.

  9. So… comparable to a steam deck then. They could’ve just said that. Though i suppose they wouldn’t want direct comparisons to their actual competition that tells owners of said steam deck that “hey, your steam deck is already doing what the nintendo switch 2 has yet to do”. Because, yeah. That’s what a steam deck is. A base ps4 equivalent with a faster processor.

  10. They compared a ps4 version to a intergrade version which was only ever released on pc/ps5.

Yet they conveniently didn’t mention that or how switch 2 is closely running to the ps5/pc version of ff7 but instead made an excuse that it’s light changes but the ps4 version when Square themselves talked about those lighting changes only on ff7 intergrade which is only on next gen and pc!

Not to mention the side by side comparisons people have done to switch 2 and ps5 version looking similar.

I don’t know what the hate boner with them on switch 2 is but clearly they can’t help themselves with opinion pieces instead of being biased in certain videos.
    Never watching those idiots again.
