Enthusiastic former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida has recently appeared on the Kit & Krysta show and had plenty of interesting nuggets of information to share. One of the things discussed is PlayStation management’s interpretation and response to Nintendo. Yoshida shared that Sony really views Xbox as its main competitor, due to their similarity of cutting edge hardware and mature games. He then shared that this view changes when it comes to Japan, where Nintendo is the dominant force in the marketplace.
“Working for PlayStation, their perception of the competition is always Xbox. They see Microsoft being the competition because Xbox is very similar – performance, hardware. Like a high-end console, mature games and Nintendo is very, very different. Nintendo is family-friendly, games for everyone, and not about technology, it’s more about having fun with friends and family and always have multiple controllers, bundled with the hardware.
Inside Sony, even when they do a business analysis, Nintendo doesn’t show up. So there’s a competition market share between PlayStation and Xbox, and somehow they don’t included Nintendo – not that they’re ignoring Nintendo, but that they do not necessarily feel Nintendo is competition because Nintendo is covering a different audience. In a bigger scale Nintendo is bringing a young audience into gaming and some of them when they grow up might graduate into more mature systems like PlayStation or Xbox. Of course there’s huge respect for what Nintendo does in terms of how Nintendo should be doing in the industry. We all felt that it’s great to have Nintendo continue to be successful so that we can grow the industry – continue to grow the industry together kind of feeling.
Except for one market – it’s Japan. In Japan Nintendo is hugely strong, and Xbox almost doesn’t exist. … it’s all about Nintendo versus Sony. So PlayStation people working in Japan see Nintendo clearly as competition, but outside Japan PlayStation people clearly see Xbox as a primary competition.”

Sounds like cope to me.
A bunch of Nintendo losers in the comments glazing Nintendo lmao 🤣
Why are you here?
Sony Ponys coping because their overpriced PS5 brick has no games 😭😭
Copium in its purest form lmao.
The Switch demolished the PlayStation worldwide, not just in Japan.
No wonder the PlayStation brand is dying a slow death, the people in charge are braindead lol.
Coming from guys who still manage to find PS2 sales more than 15 years after its production ended to “justify” its “apparent” gap with the Switch, it’s quite comical…
I’m sick of hearing about Shuhei Yoshida tbh
Shuhei should have STFU before Sony sued him for destroying their image lmaoooo this guy unintentionally raising Nintendo stocks with many of his retirement interviews.
If you feel Nintendo is your only competition than why not make more games that appeal to the Nintendo demographic?
I’ve seen this terminology now of “graduating” from Nintendo to Sony hardware multiple times. It is quite obnoxious. Personally speaking I owned a PS2 as a kid and “graduated” to Nintendo hardware.
Either way, it is a ridiculous framing, but one I imagine Sony are obsessed with as it paints them as superior to Nintendo.
the current reality is kids and adults playing on Nintendo and when those kids become adults they play on both PC and Nintendo.
They use the terminology because Nintendo only makes family-friendly games. Sony only makes games that are for older or mature audiences. There are third party companies that make family-friendly games for the PlayStation. There are no third party companies that make adult games for the Nintendo consoles. So what is it called when you move up in grade school? It’s called graduation.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Was Yashida san granted access to the Delorean time machine or something? What decade is he referring to? Sounds like a nonsensical take from 2005. Not to mention contradictory. If Ninty is kicking your rear in Japan, that probably means you should look at them as “direct competition” everywhere. Oh, and btw, I’m 49, with a Switch, S2, 3 X86 handhelds, a PS5, and XSX. Yet, Ninty gets played daily since 2017. You don’t ever “graduate” from Ninty, you pass on your love to the next generation of offspring and you travel with Ninty always in tow.
Nintendo is the embodiment of fun.
Lmao. No.
That’s some nonsense brainwashed cultist talk. Nintendo Is a terrible company (like most companies) and notoriously so for anyone who isn’t a devoted fanboy. Their games aren’t any more fun than any other games.
Terminal shit taste.
How dare you find Nintendo games fun!!!!!1!!!
Everyone must be a overly cynical, miserable POS like myself who take video games way too seriously!1!!!
Copium of the highest degree. Small wonder Yoshida is just a former president.
Last time reality checked in, Nintendo completely demolished Playstation on Japan. The Japanese market only cares about Playstation from time to time whenever some game or another gets released (and, if there’s a Nintendo version later down the line, it gets Nintendo ahead again). It’s not even a competition.
If Sony doesn’t see Nintendo as a competitor elsewhere: why did they release a device that’s basically the Wii U gimmick? Why did they dial it back certain attitudes in order to cater for smaller devs again? Why did they dig up some very dubious numbers to maintain the “PS2 still is the most sold console” argument? Why did they release Astrobot at all (which is strange, considering it’s a typical “Nintendo game” and yet was more successful than their previous ones, even winning GOTY for them – moneyhatted, sure, but it’s still a GOTY)?
The meme from the 2010s is back. There’s no arrogance like Sony’s arrogance.
Nintendo outselling both of them? Xbox like not a real competitor in the console market and puts games on everything also Game Pass Sony can’t compete with that
Nintendo fans, PlayStation fans, and Xbox fans teaming up to be the most unbearable people in every single comment section. 🔥🔥🔥
Lol. Everyone here just commenting in whatever convenient way they want to interpret the article.
I’ll just address the most common twisted point in the comments. So what if Nintendo outsells playstation? That doesn’t mean they’re in competition. If to Sony it’s an audience they won’t capture anyway, then they’re happy to let Nintendo have them, because both companies are making more people gamers.
Sony and Nintendo in Japan is a different story both because Sony sells more games that are closer to Nintendo genres, and vice versa, in Japan. And because there’s even more clear boundaries between gamers in either camp. Japan had a smaller population, so it’s more important than global to capture larger proportions of the game population as well.
Whatever your story may be (going from playstation to Nintendo, going from Nintendo to playstation, going from whatever to PC), that’s YOU. You do not represent all gamers. You are friends with other gamers who are like you. You don’t know anything outside your demographic unless you’re willing to research objectively about it. And participating in these console wars kind of proves you’re not the type of person to do that.
That’s fine and all, but when the then head of SIE comes out and says that Nintendo players graduate to PS, then they themselves are admitting to them being. something.
Now, When Sony releases a handheld to compete with Nintendos handheld, then they are admitting to being competition.
When Sony blatantly rips off the Wiimotes, then they are admitting to them being competition.
When a Nintendo announces the NES classic, and Sony then gets the bright idea to release the PS Classic, they are admitting to them being competition
When Nintendo has the most successfull racer and party brawler, and Sony blatantly rips them off with Mod Nation Racers and PS all Stars, they themselves are admitting to them being competition
When they themselves released the Portal, even after the failure that was the Vita, and all to combat the Switches ease of transition from home console to handheld, then they are admitting to being competition.
When they themselves licence the totaku Collection to blatantly rip off the Amiibos, then they themselves are admitting to them being competition.
You can try to deny it all you want, but they do see Nintendo as competition.
One of the best “objectively correct” reply I’ve ever seen on this site. I’m sure that guy will have no rebuttal to this lol.
Thanks, yeah, I doubt he’ll even reply.
A More “Mature” Console with no games or included disc drive. All adults I know play Nintendo Consoles and PC.
I mean, it’s true. Most people I know who own a Switch also own an Xbox or PlayStation for the third party games. Myself included.
Xbox and Sony Games come to PC along with all 3rd Party Games. There is no reason to own a PlayStation or Xbox. Nintendo releases a first party exclusive practically every month
True, but PC isn’t the ideal way to play. To cumbersome. That’s why these boxes make it easy to just plug… And play.
“there’s no reason to buy a $500 console because a $3000 PC can do the same thing” yeah, uh-huh.
