Mario Kart World has been updated to Version 1.1.2 on Nintendo Switch 2. This update patches out a few known issues, but more notably, has removed a feature that has become a staple of online competitive play since launch. Before the update, when selecting “Random” during course selection while playing online, it would always result in a traditional 3-lap race. Now, after Version 1.1.2, the controversial intermission courses, where the majority of laps are driving from one track to another, are a possibility when selecting Random.
Latest update: Ver. 1.1.2 (Released June 25, 2025)
General
- Adjusted courses selected in “Random” when selecting next course in a wireless “VS Race.”
Fixed Issues
- Made readjustments to fix an issue where rate fluctuations were sometimes displayed incorrectly in “Online Play” and “Knockout Tour.”
- Fixed an issue where you sometimes can’t recover quickly after falling off the course in “Dino Dino Jungle”.
- Fixed an issue where you continually hit the wall near the finish line of “Boo Cinema” when transformed into Bullet Bill.

This is a shockingly bad update. Personally, I have no issue with the intermission tracks, but many do, and the option of random allowed a sort of democracy in any lobby on the manner. Also, most intermission enjoyers are playing more Knockout Tour because that feels like the best realisation of that gameplay.
This is typical Nintendo, their answer to everyone choosing Random is, rather than giving people what they want and perhaps a dedicated mode for 3 lap racing, instead they change the Random button and demand that you will enjoy the game how they want you to.
I fail to why making the “random” option more random is a bad thing. Players can still select 3 lap races if they want. Making random biased towards one play style doesn’t seem iddeal.
No they can’t?
Why are people lying about this? You can still select individual stages for 3 lap races. They only changed random to now include intermissions in the random pool (which makes sense because it IS the random option after all)
Most of the time there is no 3 lap option.
I played 5 races this morning. Not once was I offered a 3 lap option. It happens every once in a while, but that is not remotely close to sufficient.
You are the one lying, or haven’t played online at all. A 3 lap race option comes up once every 5 races at best. Factoring in the random selection, this means it’s very likely to have to sit through 10 intermissions before ever playing a 3 lap race. The vast majority picking random was a clear signal that most people enjoy the 3 lap races more. Nintendo just refuses to listen to the players and forces us to play their way. It completely ruined the game for me and many others. Just because it doesn’t for you, doesn’t change the fact that this is a dumb and arrogant decision on Nintendo’s part.
No, you are 100% right. My experience was only in friend lobbies where you can select individual courses, so I just assumed all lobbies were the same. I still think random makes more sense this way, but Nintendo really just needs to add another mode for people who just want to do classic style races.
A new game mode would be the best solution yes. I doubt we’ll get it though.
It’s an issue because it’s not an option, and picking random was the only way to have 3 lap courses, and that’s what the majority of the playerbase was doing. You can miss me with that “developer’s intent” argument, because it’s not a good one.
Picking random is NOT the only way to do 3 lap races. That is simply not true. You can select 3 lap races by choosing any of the courses not near you.
95% of the time it’s all intermissions and there is no 3 lap option except random. I won’t be playing until they either revert this change or give more/higher rate 3 lap options.
Ah, the option I was thinking of is for friend lobbies only for some reason. I see why people are annoyed now.
Please oh please bring on donkey kong bonanza, Nintendo can’t be this nieve.
In 95% of race selection there is no 3 lap option. It’s already biased to intermissions. Random was the only option for people who wanted 3 laps.
Maybe it’s because the game rarely even gives you the option to vote for 3 laps? How about let people play how they want to?
Awful.
Comments vaguely critical to Nintendo? They may mysterious disappear over the next few days, along with their authors.
Not having Mario Kart World, I cannot judge but… can someone explain to me how the removal of this feature is a problem?…
Mario Kart World doesn’t have an option to race around a track 3 times like previous titles, and this basically forces you to drive in a (relatively) straight line… which of the playerbase does not enjoy. Driving in a straight line is not a “knockout tour” feature, the whole game is like this.
Ok thank you, nothing dramatic in itself… we still make a big deal out of not much.
Except it ruins the game for a lot of people.
I feel like it ruins the game for people that expected this game to be like 8 deluxe. If you dont like this style literally go back to the last mario kart, its not supposed to be the same. Im not defending nintendo but if this completely ruins the game for people you shouldn’t have bought it in the first place, im sure they’ll add a feature for 3 laps in due time
Disingenuous take when the series has had a reputation for playing a certain way for 30 years, and a lot of people assumed the classic style of gameplay would still be there as an option. A lot of people thought the freeway type of gameplay was in knockout tour only.
Not being able to play traditional Mario kart 3 lap races consistently is a big deal.
To make a long story short, everyone picked Random so they DIDN’T have to do the intermission races.
The update may look awful and bad but at least it fixed one issue.
More than one, actually!
One of the worst updates I’ve ever seen to any game. Nintendo is either more out of touch than we thought, or they just really don’t want us to enjoy the wonderful tracks they made. Doesn’t make any sense to me.
insert dramatic no
…Yeah I already wasn’t enjoying World nearly as much as 8 Deluxe. 24 racers is WAY too chaotic for my taste- you can be frontrunning, get hit by one blue shell, and drop to 14- in seconds and then get stuck there. Plus bagging is worse than ever. So removing an entire gameplay option takes an already irritating experience and worsens it.
Controversial?
Screw you nintendo
???
Oh now you go through when the comment is small!
