Wondering why Nintendo decided to chose the B button as the dig button in Donkey Kong Bananza when it is typically used as a jump button in the company’s platform games? Well, it is all thanks to the legend that is Shigeru Miyamoto. The game’s director, Kazuya Takahashi, revealed to Nintendo Dream that Miyamoto was the one who suggested that B should be the dig button rather than the jump button. Mr. Miyamoto told Mr. Takahashi that it felt more intuitive to use B as Donkey Kong is digging downwards.

I think it’s very intuitive to have the dig downwards action on the lower button, but I guess people just like to complain and expect every game to control exactly the same.
Good thing the other developers had the sense to provide an option to change the jump button from A to B for as you’re often using the punch button (Y) to fight enemies as well as destroy terrain either as often or even more often than the button to dig below, especially once you get other bananzas and skill upgrades
I’m nearly 90% of the game, and still dig a lot ! This button placement is perfect to my mind !
“when it is typically used as a jump button in the company’s platform games” Only in modern history. Us that grew up with Nintendo in the 90’s know you jump with the A button. Even the few SNES games that made you press B to jump had some sort of jump function with the A button.
The control scheme definitely makes sense with the bottom button to dig down, the top button to dig up etc. And evicting the jump button is a clever way of putting the terrain destruction mechanics above platforming in the pecking order, which clearly supports the design philosophy of the game.
The button layout makes sense. But I’m glad they had the option to switch A/B buttons. I was just not used to the A Button to jump.
Are there plans to making another DK game or do we have to buy a Switch 4 for $875 to play it?
