Miyamoto: Zelda 2 was “sort of a failure” and Link to the Past is the “real sequel”

In a resurfaced interview via Games Radar the legendary video game developer Shigeru Miyamoto talks about The Legend of Zelda 2 and while the game was Miyamoto’s idea, it was developed by another team at Nintendo. While it is not as highly regarded as other games in the franchise Miyamoto looks back and considers the game as “sort of a failure.” He said internally they are of the opinion that the acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the Super Nintendo was the real sequel to the original Zelda and The Legend of Zelda 2 was really “more of a side story.” Here’s what he said:

[Zelda 2] “was my original idea, but the actual game was developed by another team.”

“The games I make usually get better in the development process, since we keep coming up with good ideas, but Zelda 2 stayed the same. It was sort of a failure.”

“We actually see A Link to the Past as the real sequel to The Legend of Zelda. Zelda 2 was more of a side story about what happened to Link after the events of The Legend of Zelda.”

    1. Still better than many of the other games in the series. I’d rather play it over Ocarina of Time any day.

    1. My dream scenario would for Zelda 2 to get a full blown remake. I think OOT is too risky. If it’s too much like the original people will complain, if they do to much new content people will complain. Zelda 2 would have none of that and could benefit from a ground up remake more so. They can take risks and redesign pretty much everything without people complaining.
