Kamiya says he insisted on keeping Bayonetta’s iconic glasses on, despite pressure from others

Bayonetta is one of gaming’s most recognisable faces thanks to her intricate design, personality, and the love and attention she had poured on her by the development team. Celebrating the series 16th anniversary, Hideki Kamiya, explained that he championed Bayonetta wearing her iconic glasses, despite some wanting them to be removed. Kamiya told the team that “Bayonetta’s glasses are just like her underwear – do not take them off at any cost.” Here’s some thoughts from the development team:

Hideki Kamiya

“When we were designing Bayonetta, our clients requested us to take off her glasses, and it’s true that I kept rejecting their proposals. But it’s also true that, on a separate occasion, Mr. Shimomura, who produced the cinematics, said ‘Bayonetta’s glasses are just like her underwear – do not take them off at any cost,” Kamiya said.

“Maybe it’s due to trauma, maybe there’s some other reason behind it, I really wanted to write an episode digging deeper into why she wears the glasses… Whatever the case, in all of the Bayonetta titles I created, the only man who ever got to see Bayonetta (Cereza)’s bare face was Luka,” he said.

“During the development of Bayonetta 1, when I was drawing up rough sketches of the character design, Kamiya appeared behind me out of nowhere and whispered: ‘Give her glasses.’ That’s how everything started. Later, whenever I was sketching rough designs for Bayonetta, he’d always come up to me saying ‘Why don’t you give her glasses?’ so it became a habit for me to always have a glasses layer ready in my designs. While the process of finalizing designs was sometimes a bumpy ride, I always had the glasses layer on standby,” she commented on her X account.

  1. Ok? Sorry but I do always wonder if Kamiya is lying given the way he is. Anyway everyone buy Ninja Gaiden 4 that game needs and deserves support actual good game by Platinum. Also RIP Tomonobu Itagaki

    1. Itagaki is a legend deserved to be praised and sadly so many slandered his name like Max dood and worse matt mcmuscles also the fake FGC too all weirdos virtue signal and push politics then do sone horrible things behind the scenes. Everyone should be buying Ninja Gaiden 4 if you want quality games!

  2. Same guy who had his involvement in the W101 kickstarter scam, Tencent involvement with Platinum, turning Platinum into a live service, mobile, and licensed game studio also soured relationships with partners Sega, Nintendo, and Microsoft. Then went on to shade Platinum with his cult to pretend he’s the brain despite the damage he brought. Ignore that numerous people such as Mikami left under his leadership. Let’s see if Okami 2 actually releases given Kamiya’s track record given Project GG probably canceled now too. Previously attacked Capcom now ran back to them and now attacks the original Clover team. His bootlickers like Max dood and matt mcmuscles slandered Itagaki but defend this tool who spends all day blocking people on X. Platinum meanwhile made Ninja Gaiden 4 great game while he hasn’t directed a game in how many years? But he has his luxury car to drive around. Same bootlickers lied saying Platinum was dead after Kamiya honestly they look more alive now.

  3. He stated this back in Bayonetta one this isn’t really new information tbh …. Maybe new to the new players after Bayonetta 3… Given the Luka tie in… But not new lore at all.

Tbh … A shame with how they fumbled b3 character and story wise….
