Miyamoto reveals how Fox McCloud came to be in Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The legendary Shigeru Miyamoto has been participating in interviews all about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie which launched in cinemas worldwide today. One of the big questions posed to Mr. Miyamoto is how the iconic Fox McCloud from the much-loved Star Fox franchise came to be in the film. Miymaoto says he got a proposal from Chris Meledandri about including Fox McCloud in the movie. Miyamioto thought about it and concluded McCloud could be a good fit seeing as the movie is based in space and after lobbying Nintendo and speaking to colleagues he was “surprised” that others felt exactly the same way.

“When I got the proposal from Chris about including Star Fox, in general, from Nintendo’s perspective, we tend to avoid mixing IPs, except for the Pikmin cameo. With that said, though, as the creator of Star Fox and this movie taking place in space, I felt that I wanted to see that. I wanted to see what it would be like, but I also felt that there may be significant resistance internally about that idea, so after I got this proposal, I contacted the necessary parties involved and started my lobbying activity here at Nintendo.

“However, I was surprised to find that a lot of people saw a lot of potential with it and were really excited to see what would come out of this.”

  1. Im fine with it in the movie universe since each mario species seems to have its own planet and Fox/Pikmin fit fine as just being treated as if they are like koopas or toads from their own world.

    1. It’s definitely to advertise the rumored Star fox game coming to the switch 2. He wants general audiences to get familiarized with Star fox before the game comes out. Especially if you’ve seen the movie, indefinitely has to be the case given his role.

  2. Look, I’m fine with the idea of a non-Mario character having a big role in one of his movies, especially someone disappeared from the scenes for years like Fox… but not if it goes to the expense of who should have been the highlight of this movie, especially when the character in question is my favorite character in the Mario franchise AND a female character… I feel extremely demoralized right now…

    1. Cringe, dude.

I loved Star Fox on the Super Nintendo, it’s one of the only reasons I kinda wanna check this one out. 😅

  3. Nintendo have spoiled this movie before it even comes out.

Seems a running theme for a while with movies, release a bunch of trailers spoiling all the decent jokes or plot. It’s like TikTok for hyperactive no-time-to-wait kinda people. It’s done with near enough any movie, even if aimed at kids/adults.

  4. It has nothing to do with TikTok. I am 32. It was like this back when I was in high school too. Marketing agencies are external from the production of the movies. Their entire job to make weekend 1 as big as possible at the expense of anything and everything. Including the actual experience of the film. It’s definitely an issue. And it frequently hurts movies. If people organically had gotten excited about Fox it would have been a bigger deal than it being advertised to us. Same with Rocky in Project Hail Mary. Same with all 3rd act reveals in trailers.

      1. (suggestion: this Biblical verse: “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” – Ephesians 4:29, New Living Translation version)

    1. He was. Now he’s past his expiration date, and needs to go to a retirement home, he clearly doesn’t grasp his own characters anymore.

  5. The Crossover Characters and stages were one of the greatest parts of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. As many great things as Miyamoto has done (mostly during the SNES to GameCube) most modern franchises he gets involved with get, those entries become worse if not ruined due to him. There are a lot of scrapped and unreleased projects, some which are basically finished but never released due to him. The original Luigi’s Mansion 2 waa basically scrapped, Paper Mario on the 3DS was originally closer two 64 and Thousand Year Door, Star Fox 2 was finished but never released on the SNES, Twilight Princess Director and the Mario Galaxy Director said they had to go behind Miyamoto’s back to add even the smallest amount of story because Miyamoto was on a “Story doesn’t matter and shouldn’t be in Video Games” Rampages, he sucked out all creativity in the entire Mario Franchise for a whole generation, he is why Star Fox on the WiiU failed.

    1. Wasn’t Iwata the one who forced the gamepad controls due to the system flopping?

Remember that iwata commisioned miyamoto to create games that took advantage of the gamepad.

  6. This makes sense since it does fit with the theme of space. But I also suspect that they added fox to try opening up the idea for a new star fox game.

  7. It sounds like they should have let a Super Mario Bros movie sequel percolate longer and just made a Star Fox Galaxy movie. Obviously budgets and investment were geared for the Mario brand, but artistically this would have been the better way. Oh well, they’ve made spaghetti and waffles the movie and it’s ultimately for younger audiences that just need their eyeballs speedbagged with the typical humor

  8. A Real Nintendo Fan

Spoilers: I saw the movie, they made Fox a immature D-Bag that only cares about showing off, bragging, and quote: “Only Doing Things If The Price Is Right”, Doesn’t care about anything except for his ego. Miyamoto doesn’t understand his own characters at all, I don’t care if he was the original creator, Fox has games, Fox has Lore, Fox has character. They Ruined Fox, The masses will eat it up. I’m an actual Starfox fan though, and I’m sure Nintendrones will comment and attack me to because they always defend everything that Nintendo does.

    1. If you’re serious & not doing an April Fool’s joke, replay Star Fox 64 again. Star Fox charged the Lylat military for each enemy you, as Fox, took out throughout the game. So sorry to tell you this but it seems the movie actually got him right. Their team aren’t heroes that save the day free of charge: their mercenaries just like Star Wolf.

  9. I saw the clips of Fox on social media and completely agree, they Marvel / Guardians of the Galaxyfied his personality and turned him into what you said, a basically a huge d@#$%& bag. As a Star Fox fan myself, it made me want to end my existence.

  10. Saw the movie. Wow are people over blowing the mischaracterization of Fox. I’d argue they actually sufficiently explained why he is slightly different than what one would expect of his character. Plus, he’s just sillier because everyone is in the Mario movies.

  11. Not all Nintendo MCs are flawless heroes. Mario abused Donkey Kong in his younger days, Fox McCloud is a mercenary who pretty much nickel & dimed the Lylat Military for fighting Andross’s army in 64 (he charges for each enemy he takes out instead of one large sum for fighting Andross’s army as a whole), Kirby sometimes causes the problems facing Dreamland (you wouldn’t call an arsonist a hero for putting out the very fires he/she started), & even some Links have inadvertently fucked up.

  12. Fox isn’t anything like in the Mario Movie, his father died/went missing due to the Scientist Andross and he became a pilot because he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and puts back together uis father’s original team called Star Fox with Peppy Hare. He fights to honor his father who fought for what was right while investigating what happened to his father and to go after the man responsible for his father’s disappearance. In the Games its heavily implied James McCloud is still alive. In the games Fox cares about people, he isn’t a show off or in it for the money or fame, he has a friendly competiveness with Falco but other then that Fox is a pretty down to earth heroic character, and absolutely nothing like in the film.
