Insider Gaming says Ubisoft has canned its Animal Crossing-inspired Alterra

Insider Gaming has been on a roll lately and its latest report states that Ubisoft has canned its Animal Crossing like game, Alterra. The project was never officially announced by the company but it was reported in 2024 that the game was in development at the French developer. We now know that the game was titled Alterra and the site reports that employees were told the game was canceled on Tuesday, and they were subsequently all sent home for the day. Thankfully, Insider Gaming says that no layoffs were announced at the time of cancellation, so they will be sent to work on a new project. Alterra had been in development for nearly three years at Ubisoft Montreal and was led by creative director Patrick Redding and lead producer Fabien Lhéraud.

Alterra was a social-sim game inspired by Animal Crossing. The game featured a voxel art style and mechanics similar to Minecraft, where players could build what they want with gathered materials.

Images seen in the past by Insider Gaming show Matterlings—the NPCs in the game—that look similar to Funko Pop characters. The world consisted of different biomes that housed unique creatures and materials to meet, fight, and gather.

  1. Looks like Unisoft was smart enough to realize Nintendo would sue them I’d they tried to copy one of their profitable I.P.s so they quit while they were ahead for once.
