Miyamoto responds to critics who left negative reviews for Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may have been a hit with cinema goers but the response from critics when the reviews for the film landed were far from great with a 37 Metascore on Metacritic, which leaves a lot to be desired. Shigeru Miyamoto has commented to the critics reviews in a new interview with Nintendo Dream. Here’s what he had to say:

“Regarding the critics’ reviews of the first film, I remember thinking, ‘they have a point.’ But I figured this time would be different… only to find that the they were even harsher than last time, which I found rather odd (laughs).”

“We stepped in from another medium and did our best to help energize the film industry. And yet the very people who are supposed to champion the film industry are the ones being so negative; it’s truly baffling.”

  1. You can’t reason with them Miyamoto, and that’s okay. Fun, creative, and joyful people was your target audience– and y’all nailed it.

  2. I usually always ignore critics since all they want is just action movies and junk. I always stick with the audience score.

    1. This is literally the opposite of what movie critics want. The fact that you even posted this means you gotta leave your bedroom once in a while.

    1. It’s possible for a film to be both good fan service and a poor movie. I found the first to be a touch underwhelming in both categories, so I skipped the second. I’ll watch it when it’s free to me, and buy the 4K if I end up liking it.

  3. It’s not a great “film”… I think he’s a little bit high on his own supply to be baffled by the review scores

  4. Miyamoto-san, I love you, but they’re right. I think the problem is that Illumination, as a film studio, should have warned Nintendo that throwing nonstop references into the movie is not a good thing from a cinematic standpoint. They are great animators, but not great filmmakers when it comes to cinematography.

    1. Exactly. Illumination is like the lowest common denominator for big-budget animated movies. All style, no substance.

And, MINIONS- I hate those talking Twinkies. They alone make Illumination bottom-tier for me.

  5. Honestly how many people pay attention to critics nowadays instead of reviews by ordinary people? Even that can be hit or miss, but it still gives people a better idea of how much they’re going to enjoy something than a critic if things aren’t being review bombed.

    1. Exactly. And more than anything it’s marketing that tells the majority of people what to like, not critics. Otherwise they’d spend $100M buttering critics instead of advertising
