Nintendo has recently patented a Dock which supports the use of both the original Nintendo Switch system and the newer Nintendo Switch 2 platform. As Nintendo Patents Watch notes both systems handle the Power Delivery negotiation differently. Though with this Dock it can recognise which console is connected, be it a Nintendo Switch or a Nintendo Switch 2. It should also be noted that the Dock’s internal fan not only cools the Dock but it also cools the console. Here’s the specs:
Nintendo Switch 2 docked:
- USB 3 data standard
- Higher res video out
- Higher fan RPM
With Nintendo Switch docked:
- USB 2 data standard
- Lower res video out
- Lower fan RPM
If this comes to fruition then I’d buy it, probably won’t be cheap though.
I played welcome tour and I learned why the original switch won’t work on a switch 2 dock, the new dock provided too much voltage for the og switch. This new dock must have a system that detects what switch is inserted and changes the voltage for it.
Voltage is already negotiated by all components involved whenever a USBC power connection is made(charger, cable, device). The difference here is with the switch 2 Nintendo followed USBC standards. And they completely ignored them on the original.
They could have already done this from the beginning, they chose not to.. it wouldn’t even have been difficult. The current new dock negotiates as well. It just doesn’t negotiate that out of standard spec that they used on the original. Simply because they chose not to.
Wow. That’ll be cool.
With some of the stuff Nintendo has pulled lately this feels less like them planning to make one and more them trying to stop 3rd parties from making one. But I hope I’m wrong.
Not sure why the switch 2 dock doesn’t support both. Huge oversight in my opinion. So dumb.
It’s because the switch 2 dock provides too much voltage for the original switch, it wouldn’t be able to connect to the tv without frying the original switch. The switch 2 is 60 volts while the original switch is 39 volts.
So regulate that. Apparently it’s possible.
I always thought this was gonna be a thing with the Switch 2’s dock.
I think This is most likely them creating the patent just so no third party can make one. If this does end up being something Nintendo makes then cool.
This patent sounds promising and could make switching between consoles much easier. I also find Inches in cm useful for quick conversions. Thanks for the update.
Interesting patent! A dock that automatically adjusts fan speed and USB specs depending on which Switch you insert would save so much desk/entertainment unit space. It’s always nice when setups are simplified so you can just relax and play. It reminds me of planning a casual weekend—getting your setup sorted, picking up some comfort food from the Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen menu, and just kicking back with games all day. Really hope third parties are allowed to innovate around this concept too.
