SEGA plans to evolve classic Sonic alongside modern games

Sonic series executive producer Takashi Iizuka has participated in an interview with Invenglobal during which he stated that the company is in the process of evolving classic Sonic games as well as modern Sonic games going forward. This ties in with recent comments from Iizuka during which he said “trying something new with Sonic can result in a completely unique game.”

“We consider 2D Sonic based on Classic Sonic, 3D-based Modern Sonic, and racing games as the three major pillars of the Sonic franchise. Right now, we aim to thoroughly satisfy the demand for racing games through ‘Sonic Racing’. Of course, we also plan to continue evolving both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic going forward.”

  1. I wish they would make a racing game where the characters run. Kind of like in Adventure 2 Battle but balanced, online, and fully fleshed out

  2. People still criticizing Sonic Team that keeps bringing back Classic Sonic. Sonic’s past self but some people like me are ok with Classic Sonic appearing together with his future self Modern Sonic in games. They still want to improve the whole Sonic brand with old and new fans in order to save it.

      1. Just because they are gone or moved on, that doesn’t stop old and new fans for begging another game like that again. The game was really well received with great amount of reception.

  3. Bro, just kill Modern Sonic, at this point. He has done nothing but riding the coatails of Classic Sonic, almost nothing but bad games. Iizuka keeps trying to revive this dead horse, and he just doesn’t get it.

That, and both SEGA and Sonic Team have atrocious budgets, recently.

  4. It doesn’t feel like classic sonic is a pillar, more of a gimmick to pander to the olds. I don’t think the classics need to evolve, then you don’t have a classic pillar anymore. Just make games that have the same dedication to fun sidescrolling with eye catching hand drawn art, that’s what classics should inspire

    1. I can agree and related to your comment right there. Classic games doesn’t need to be evolve for old Sonic fans to enjoy but they can refresh the balance of the side scrolling play style for Classic Sonic for another 2D Sonic game like Sonic Mania. Yes things most often be drawn on the computer, tablet or spread sheet paper by hand.

  5. I didn’t like Superstars at sll but even if it was a better game, I didn’t like the emerald abilities. If something isn’t broken (16 Bit Sonic) don’t try to fix it or reinvent the wheel. If you add interesting stories, locations, maybe a new character or enemy here and there, its fine. Theres a reason there are so many Classic Mega Man and Mega Man X games.

    1. And that is the main reason why that most respective companies have to save the franchise life by keeping it alive by bringing in old classic collection game or revamped them by remaking them in modern consoles. GameFreak did the same with mainline Pokémon games by remaking them from scratch and want to see how it will look on modern gaming consoles with advance graphics. This is why other companies started to do the same for their own respective franchises and possibly prevent themselves for going bankrupt.

  6. I think having a Classic and Modern pillar for Sonic is healthy for the series. Just let either team have enough time to make what they need to, playtest the games, ignore anniversary deadlines (Dont care we didnt get any news for a new entree because rushing for these anniversaries is what screwed over the series)

All I ask for the next 2D Sonic is to ditch the Genesis Instruments for the music, and dont ever do the bosses like Superstars again. Other than that, Spritebased, 3D, Handdrawn? I dont mind any particular path they take.

  7. The Reason we have Classic Sonic besides that version if Sonic not being dragged through the dirt like Modern Sonic. I think Takashi Iizuka is stupidly one minded, stubborn, and closed minded. Just like how he doesn’t want to being Mighty, Ray, and other classic characters to Modern games which makes no sense. I think in his mind, he thinks that Modern Sonic must have a Boost now, and to get the 2D Sonic Gameplay, the Boost is jot included for that. I love Sonic Rush but they don’t touch the Classic or Sonic Advance games.

  8. ok then stop forcing bad 2D sections in 3D sonic games lol….man this company is annoying
Shadow Generations 3D levels were so great, then you got forced to do 2D challenges…at least the 2d challenges werent as boring as previous 3D attempts

  9. Sonic Superstars is a good game actually. It’s only real problem is the boss design (especially the final bosses). Another 2D Sonic game with tighter boss design that doesn’t make you wait for each chance to attack would be great

  10. I miss when 2D Sonics weren’t just sections in 3D Sonic or coasted on nostalgia each release.
Is SEGA still burned over Sonic Rush not selling as great even though they didn’t give it yhe marketing it needed (due to 06)?

    1. I didnt dislike Rush both games cannot compare to the Sonic Advance or Genesis titles. Sonic Colors for the Nintendo DS and Sonic Generations for the 3DS both used Rush’S gameplay formula. After those and Sonic Lost World on the 3DS (Which I still think is better than it’s console counterpart.) I don’t think that Sega has brought back Dimps. Sonic Rush was holding down Boost with a lot of forced sections where you had to defeat enemies to artificially make the levels longer. I still loved them, I loved the stages, music, characters, story, and the levels felt like roller coaster rides. But Sonic Advance Trilogy and the Genesis were better Platformers. I don’t think Sonic Team even cares about 2D Sonic, its why every 2D Sonic title has been developed by other studios. They Could gave finally proved themselves and made a large, Modern, High Quality side scrolling Sonic title in house by Sonic Team but instead they gave it to Balan WonderWorld developers. Even is Sonic team did make it, it would have been a low budget mess though.

I found Superstars to be one of the worst Sonic Games of all time. I’ve beaten them all. Sonic Forces and Superstars are the worst games in the franchise for me. I often go back to reply all sonic games, even all of the GameGear titles, even the titles where Sonic cannot run or jump I enjoyed. Sonic Superstars had a poor Camara, poorer level design, horrible bosses, The Levels didnt have the same number of acts per Zone, they forced a stupid gimic with the chaos emeralds, the forced levels with Amy for example where you had to destroy fruit was stupid, most of the music was horrible. Loved Sonic Mania. Sonic Mania’s only problem was that Takashi Iizuka forced the team to levels from past stages instead of being 100% original. Part of me feels like that was failed attempt to sabotage the success but failed as Mania still humiliated Sonic Team. They even used Scrapped Ideas from Whitehead’s Mania 2 in Superstars but because they idiotically used the Balan WonderWorld developers, they failed.
