Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo Power Reveals Super Mario 3D Land Details

US gaming publication Nintendo Power has revealed a whole host of interesting and exciting Super Mario 3D Land details for the Nintendo 3DS. I received the opportunity to play the game at a recent Nintendo press event and lets just say it’s shaping up nicely! Here’s some of the details:

General

– Focuses on snappy action instead of exploration
– Nintendo Power never spent a second wondering where to go or how to get there
– Usually can press left/right on the Control Pad to move the camera and peek at the path in front/behind you
– All levels have a set of medals that you can collect
– Faint chime can be heard when you’re close to a medal
– Ground pound: L or R while jumping
– hold a button to run
– Touch a checkpoint flag to save your progress in the level
– flags are in every level
– Backflip: start by crouching (L/R); this game requires you to stay crouched for roughly a second before doing a backflip
– Can flip forward or backward
– Stopwatches add to your time
– Long jump: Jump while holding L/R
– Mario can wall jump and cartwheel jump
– Triple jump is gone

Tanooki Suit

– Continue to hold the jump button to descend slower than normal
– Can whip the suit’s tails at bricks/enemies
– Swing the tail while holding L or R to crouch

      1. True I wont be surpassed if the Wii U cost’s 500 DOLLU’S! Really, Nintendo really needs to care about it’s fans.

        1. If the PS3 costed so much and was a shock. What happens to Wii U?

My reaction maybe similar, don’t be surprised to hear something similar when your in the Wii U price release in early 2012.

          1. Correction you didnt in 3D Mario games you never had to hold a button. You were at one speed. Altough mario 64 and sunshine did have a move where you could slide on your belly but thats not running. Replay it.

            1. actually super mario 64 did infact have a run bottom well at least the ds did i can check i’m to lazy to turn my wii on but the run button just fells nesereay

      1. To be very clear – Mario would always run in these 3D Mario games: Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Galaxy 2. Mario did not automatically run in Super Mario 64 DS.

        1. Because the DS didn’t have a contrl stick, just a D-Pad. And yes, I’m sure you know but I’m just contributing lol.

      2. dude only in the old 2d mario games… and the super mario 64 DS remake ( i forgot if you had to hold a button in the original) BUT NOT EVERY ONE YOU IDIOTIC TROLL!!

  1. Dangit! I moved out of country and I can’t get any of the issues… I had a few months left. They’ll be there me when I come back next year but they’ll also be a year old!

Anyways, this game is about 5th on my “Most Wanted” list. Mario Kart, Zelda, and Sonic Generations make up my top 3… I’m just not that excited for this game. A demo might change my mind.

  2. This reminds me more of Super Mario Wolrd. You press and hold a button to run and to fly, and there were no triple jumps then. Btw, they’re using 3D is a very interesting way. The part where Mario is in a small room with a big coin, in 2D, the cube in the air with the coin looks like it’s unreachable and you have to go around to see its exact location. In 3D, you can see it clearly.

So it’ll be Uncharted 3 vs Super Mario 3D Land in the battle of 3D, so I assume far more people will experience Mario 3D than UC3.

    1. It reminds me of Super Mario Land rather than World…

Hmmm, Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario Land…

Perhaps there was a reason why all three Mario Land games are coming to the Virtual Console first…

  4. I played this at Gamefest last month, it was fantastic but it didn’t have that sweet level select hub. The 3D was better than any of the games currently out. The medals were easy to find but that’s just down to the levels they selected for the demo (I hope).

Just annoyed that this arrives the same day as Assassin’s Creed: Revelations

  6. The triple jump might not be included, because Mario 3d Land has smal leavels and not enough space to complete a trible jump.
    Thats how i see it.

  7. Too bad Mario can’t fly like in SMB3. That would be sweet if the game was similar to SM64, with the whole flying option available. Except you’d have the Tanooki suit instead of the winged cap.

  10. It’s meant to play like a 2D platformer but in 3D. In the 2D mario games, you had a run button and no triple jump. Just a guess, but I think that was Nintendo’s intention.

I honestly don’t care if there’s running and triple jumping or not; somehow Nintendo is going to make this challenging and fun!

  11. I’m not particularly bothered about the lack of Triple Jump, I never really used it all that much in all honesty (backflip was way more useful in most 3D games). The lack of the statue functionality with the Tanooki Suit… now that’s less excusable.

Most of the details known about this game sound good though.

  12. super mario 3d land will pwn sonic generations 3ds look at the trailer for the game classic sonic looks like a riped model from sonic adventure. :[ modern sonic looks i got to say epic but if it had 3d sections this is me :’O yeauuhhhhhhhhhhh!!.
