Nintendo Wii U: Sonic Creator Wants A Wii U Development Kit

Yuji Naka, the creator behind Sonic has told Siliconera that he’s desperate for Nintendo to send him a Wii U development kit. Apparently Wii U development kits are a rarity at the moment but let’s hope Nintendo eventually decides to give him one.

I don’t have a development kit right now. [Laughs.] Please ask Nintendo to send me one! Or maybe Bandai Namco Games can send me one. I would really like a chance to play with that hardware. Right now there probably aren’t many development kits.

    1. He may be the creator of Sonic, but he can’t work on a Sonic game unless Sega says so, which is doubtful.

      1. Sega is a game publisher, They don’t make games anymore, It’s sonic team that makes sonic games usually.

Sega are already publishing (Not developing) a game which is going on Wii U.

        Am I right?

  1. I feel like Ninty is really behind at this point. The console is releasing in like a year, and nobody seems to be developing for it (besides the same companies we saw at E3). Games take a long time to make. lol

Of course, even thought it seems like they’ve reached out to some third party developers, I bet they have some major 1st party surprises in store as usual.

    1. Maybe becuz there’s either limited dev kits oorrr there’s third parties that are silently creeping around making games. They don’t to necessarily come out and say “heyyy were developing for Wii u launch”

    2. You have not seen the amount of 3rd party’s?

Gearbox is developing a game, BF3 is being ported, Arkam city is being ported, Dirt is being developed, Ghost recon is being ported to Wii U from PC, Ubisoft are developing a FPS exclusive called Killer Freaks from outer space, now sonic creator is wanting sonic.

Seriously, Know the news before you post things you don’t even know.

      1. The Sonic creator says he wants to look at the hardware. He may be the creator of Sonic, but he’s not the owner. Sega owns Sonic, and they probably have a development kit by now considering their relationship with Nintendo.

        1. If the game develuper recently (I forgot the name of the recent develuper) said that the graphics and specs are brilliant and gave thumbs up, Then I’m alredy anticipating Sonic wii u

I thought Sega said Sonic generations maybe ported to Wii U.

  2. you know what this means right if the creator of sonic wants that means that he might port generations when he gets it and uses it

    1. He’s the creator of Sonic, not the owner. Sega owns Sonic now, and since the creator left Sega a while ago, he doesn’t own the right to make any Sonic games at the moment.

    1. You need to hope Sonic team does let this happen mainly.

Sega owns Team Sonic and Sonic games, Nintendo does not but it’s nintendo’s choice to hand out development kits.

  3. I like that people are failing to realize that Yuji Naka isn’t a part of SEGA anymore, so even if he got a kit, it doesn’t mean anything for Sonic, since he doesn’t make those games anymore XD

    1. Most games are programmed in C++, but the development kits allow the developers to take advantage of the features of the console with the programming functions unique to the console. It also allows them to debug the games and test the games.

Paying a fee to make games is Apple’s Appstore, I believe.

      1. Some how we can tell this person Is a my little pony fan, look at the icon. No wonder she hates Sonic, both completely different things.

  4. I would assume that Nintendo reached out to really big developers/publishers first like Crytek, THQ, etc and then to those who have supported them with the Wii and DS such as Sega, Team Ninja, etc. The smaller ones are likely to be last. However, don’t forget that the reason Nintendo is not talking about Wii U at this point is because their main focus for this holiday is the 3DS. Wii games are also set to be released this year, and we have the whole 25th Anniversary of Zelda going on, with Skyward Sword leading the way. They want people to focus on those right now.

Iwata has gone on record saying that there will be plenty of first party games launching alongside the new system. I think they’re in a good spot. Nintendo hoped that third parties would sustain the 3DS and decided to stick with their usual development time, which is long. Clearly that didn’t work and they acknowledge that. It was a good thing that this happened to them as hardware makers usually get up in the clouds after a success and fail to deliver with the introduction of a new system. Now Nintendo is in a position where they will be more careful and not go with the flow of hype.

They will deliver with the Wii U, I bet my right testicle on it! It would also explain why they don’t have any of their big franchises for the Wii except for Zelda and Kirby. We all know how long Skyward Sword has been in development and it’s looking insane!

      1. I don’t. in fact, I have a lot of projects that I am working on in college right now. I have an anatomy test on Monday, I just had one last week, I just finished writing two versions of a small three-page story I had to write due on Monday, and I have to start writing a 10-page fiction for next week, and I’m working on a design project for this week. I have a lot to do, but ideas never stop coming, so I’m very fluent in what I write about. Also, English is my second language. It’s difficult to try many different things and keep up with them, but it’s fun nonetheless.

  5. MARIO AND SONIK AR GAYYYYY!!!!!1111111
COD I BETTER IS FOR TRU GAMERS!!!! BETTER GRAPHICS WITH BLOOD MARIO IS FOR KIDZZZZ!!!!!!11111111

    1. GET OFF THIS SITE IF YOU HATE NINTENDO!!!!!!!!

Really, When I play COD, why do i hear kids on mics all the time?

I always see adults playing Nintendo games, Who else notaced?

      1. Yeah, and considering how many people can figure out sarcasm within text easily, using the ol’ “You can’t figure out sarcasm in text very well” excuse ain’t gonna cut it.

    2. I believe the casual gamer or hardcore gamer doesn’t depend on the game being played but rather the gamer.

We’re all pretty much hardcore gamers here since we spend time discussing about games and researching information.

I believe the casual gamers would be the type to enter a game store not knowing what’s new or old just to see what they have, like my mother.

  6. I would take this as good news if he can’t ahold of a Wii U kit, maybe so many developers (1st and 3rd party) are working on titles, that it’s hard to get one right now. Reminds me of when it was nearly impossible to find a Wii in stock in it’s first months of release

  8. -_- Yuji doesn’t make Sonic games anymore. He left SEGA. And are people really acting like Sonic games still suck? That’s sad…

  10. A news article earlier said that Sega was working on a Sonic title already for Wii U? It even saids it was another “sonic and the…” game. Sega has a development kit, guess this guy was left out :|

  11. From my understanding, you don’t need a devKit to start developement. That are huge amounts of dev that can be done without it. Plus, all a developer needs are pcs that roughly match the specs and they can begin on that…
