Pokemon Gray Incoming To Nintendo 3DS?

We already know that the Pokemon Company has revealed that they have a few ‘amazing’ Pokemon games scheduled for 2012 but now it seems as though Pokemon Gray could actually be one of those games. An advert for the new Pokemon movie in the latest issue of Corocoro Magazine has multiple captions which read “What mystery is hidden in Kyurem?” and “Kyurem’s unseen power will be revealed!”. Kyurem is the third member of the Tao trio, which exists in the legends of the Unova region and is gray.

    1. This.

I can’t understand why everybody and their mother seems to think Pokemon Grey will come out for 3DS. Third versions of main Pokemon games have always been just the originals with some bells and whistles, not whole new games for whole new systems.

            1. The 3ds is not even close to being an updated DSI, dual cameras. Many of the features that set them apart are: new interface, 3D without glasses, gyroscope, constant communication with online and other players through spotpass and streetpass respectively, a new eShop, 3D Videos, and more. The 3DS is a whole new console as opposed to an update to the DSI.

                  1. Pokemon main games should stay as sprites. It’s kinda like tradition.

If something has sprites, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s worse than polygons. It’s an art style.

And I think it may be for the 3DS. If you play Black/White, you can notice there are so many aspects in the game that would seem perfect and designed for 3D.

          1. Gold and Silver are not Game Boy Color games. They have the notch in the cartridges on the top-right, whereas Game Boy Color games don’t. Crystal was a Game Boy Color game. Just look at the cartridges, you can tell.

            Here, see for yourself:
            Gold Cartridge: http://www.instructables.com/image/FK4JQ6KF48NDIQ8/You-Will-Need.jpg
            Crystal Cartridge: http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Pokemon-Crystal-Version-Game-Boy-Color-cartridge-/00/$%28KGrHqF,!icE2LgF9Fi8BNvF6l45zw~~_35.JPG

All Game Boy games have the notch in the top-right. Game Boy Color games do not. ;)

        1. Crystal,Gold,Silver were all released for the Gameboy Colour. Red,Blue and Yellow where all released on the original Gameboy.

          1. Actually you would be wrong. Gold and Silver are regular gameboy carts but with color feature built in if played on a Gameboy Color.

            1. Davin Ockerby (aka Platinum Lucario)

Actually, Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver were designed for the GameBoy Color, but were playable for the original GameBoy, ’cause it contained the 4 monochrome palettes, which consisted of white, light grey, grey and black. Where as Pokémon Crystal didn’t have the compatible palettes for the GameBoy, so it could not be playable on the original GameBoy. I’m thinking the same sort of thing might happen with Pokémon Gray, as it becomes a DSi exclusive (meaning that it’s only playable on DSi or 3DS). But I highly doubt it would be a DSi exclusive, ’cause there have only been 6 DSi exclusive ROMs (which means there is only 3 DSi exclusive games made). So I pretty much think it’s gonna be just DSi enhanced, like what Pokémon Black and Pokémon White are (so which means it would be also compatible for the original DS). Pokémon Gray would never fit in the development process if it was made for 3DS.

              1. Which was nothing but a marketing ploy considering the cartridges were specialized GB carts. Pokemon Yellow used the same cartridge and was properly labelled as the “GameBoy” game it was supposed to be.

So you may be -right- but G/S are only “GameBoy Color” because Nintendo said so. It definitely isn’t when it boils down to specs.

        2. No, Gold and Silver were Game Boy Color Games that could be played on the original Game Boy. Crystal was just a GBC Game.

        1. okay cool, now get cancer. Thank you.
Shame that the users of this site are almost all trolls, since this is one of the better news sites.

      1. In reality, it can be the same region and same Pokemon as usual with third versions, and still be on the 3DS. Just add 3D, make the story a little more in-depth as usual, and it’ll be the exact same. Just because there’s a circle pad doesn’t mean Pokemon will forever have to have Colosseum/XD style graphics. It’ll still be 4 directional movement and sprites in battle screens, just with a 3D touch to it.

        1. I think what he means is a DS game playable on the 3DS in 3D with added features. Sort of like certain DS games that had special features for the DSi.

    2. Actually, they could probably add features like street pass or 3d pokedex , 3d sprites and attacks, they don’t have to change everything. But it would be nice if it would be on the ds, so i don’t have to go out and get a 3ds

  1. The only time Nintendo’s ever released a third game exclusively to a platform its previous pair weren’t exclusive to was Crystal (which was a Game Boy Color-only title, while Gold and Silver were playable on the original Game Boy). They won’t make its third title a 3DS title. It’ll be the last main Pokemon game for the DS.

The 3DS will be where the 6th gen starts up.

      1. Davin Ockerby (aka Platinum Lucario)

That’s a very good question. I’m not sure if they will have the time to continue the Nintendo DS development by then unless they start making Pokémon Lava Ruby and Ocean Sapphire in 2013 for Japan and release it in 1214 for other countries.

          1. Ruby and Sapphire came out 2002 in Japan, and 2003 in US/EU. There will definitely be MORE than ten years between R/S and their inevitable remakes.

      1. I never said that it was going to utilize 3D. Its most likely going to be able to play normally at the expanded resolution of the 3DS. That is what 3DS enhanced means

    1. I’m thinking people who liked black and white, they might give a shit? Such as me?
Besides the 3rd games in the series are usually the best in each gen (except maybe gen 1) so I recon this’ll mean a really good updated version of B/W so maybe even the people who weren’t crazy as B/W might enjoy this more, such as yourself!

      1. NAS I’m done with pokemon games when will they ever end next what rainbow gold and silver were the best ones by far the games don’t change

          1. I think they were being sarcastic with rainbow but yea this person makes some valid points what’s wrong with making a pkmon game like the GameCube games but story of the handheld

    2. Given the fact black and white made history for some of the fastest sales, I think a LOT of people care. Also, people who actually understand the mechanics and play competitively, such as myself, really like the new additions because it normally means new moves available for Pokemon, more tutors, and sometimes new forms. It’s arguable that Black and White have the best story to date on terms of Pokemon games, too. Either way, the magic in Pokemon is that it as simple or complex as you want it to be.

‘when will they ever end?’ Umm, it’s a game that takes nature and merges it with fantasy. There are so many damned possibilities it’s not even funny. Not to mention that it’s the second most successful game franchise in existence. It would probably be the most successful franchise if Mario games weren’t included with the NES and SNES consoles.

      1. Uhm….
Call of duty. Also proffessionals expect GTA5 to be the best selling game in history, because MW3 dissapointed people.

  2. Kyurem looks ugly.
But yeah I agree with the previous posts that this will properly be for theDS rather than 3DS :(

        1. FUCK YOU. Kyurem has to be the most hideous dragon I’ve ever seen. But seriously, look at him for about half-an-hour and tell me what you are really looking at.

  3. cant wait for it to come out it will probley be for the ds but it will be really good if it came out but ethier way am going to get it the first day it comes out

  4. i’m guessing this “mystery” will be another form of kyurem. that’s what happened with giratina in platinum. but in pokemon grey/gray they will have to change the storyline because kyurem is in the Giant Chasm but in black and white the giant chasm accessible through lacunosa town is only available after you beat the Pokemon League. if pokemon grey’s main legendary is kyurem then you wouldn’t have to wait to beat the pokemon leaugue and then catch him. and as for wether it will be for the 3ds i hope it will be but then again it makes more sence to be on the DS since b/w were.

what if kyurem isn’t the mascot of pokemon grey/gray? (even though it most likely will be) what if it’s genesect or keldeo?

    1. Remember that Giratina was only catchable AFTER you defeated the Elite Four in Diamond and Pearl as well and He was the Main Legendary in Platinum. If Gray/Grey does happen and Kyurem is the Main Legendary, Game Freak will just change the story round to fit in Kyurem

  5. I wonder why people are assuming that Nintendo is going to make this a 3DS game, despite all of their history pointing to it being on the same handheld its previous 2 versions are on.

    1. Because the 3DS, although doing great now, still needs software to keep up the momentum. The Mario and Mario Kart game greatly increased sales, but games like Pokemon will help it even more.

  6. The Troll Who Owns A 3DS

i think that the game is going to be called Pokemon Crimson since Reshiram is White and in Black and Zekrom is Black and in White. and in the Pokedex Kyurem is listed as blue.

  7. Came to a point with black were I thought iv done this with every other pokemon game and I can’t be arsed to do it again and the new pokemon looked shit had exactly the same moves as the others it felt like all the rest it was an epic fail so to bring out grey which everyone knew they would may just have the same crap as crystal emerald and so on just pointless so if this is just my opinion by the way and I think the 3ds has a lot more to offer than another top down walk in 4 directions predictable pokemon game

    1. Yeah, Emerald is far from being crap :P nor is 5th gen. Now 4th gen kinda did suck aside from the Wi-Fi capability.

      1. 4th generation had more things to do that any other generation. I kinda find it hard to believe that it ‘sucked.’ While 2nd gen had a larger map, Kanto was so boring and there was next to nothing interesting to do there. 4th generation also made a very successful change to the battle system involving the difference in physical/special moves. 4th gen was also very balanced and I found it possible to win with just about anything if I EV trained correctly and got the correct moves. The new 5th gen Pokemon and abilities pretty much broke that balance completely. I like 5th gen, but I feel that they threw in all these extremely powerful Pokemon without thinking twice.

  8. pokemon WILL come to the 3ds. its just a matter of time. If you count rumble blast then im already right. I know for sure that a main series pokemon game will come to the 3ds.

  9. Of course Nintendo has reason to release this on 3DS -to boost sales of the console. Because we all know people would buy a 3DS just to get their pokie monsters. Even though its more likely it will be on the DS, no one should rule the 3DS out just because of what’s happened in the past.

  10. Pokemon for DS is like Guitar Hero for PS2. It will keep the DS alive for a while even after the DS is succeeded by the 3DS. Note that Pokemon Emerald, a GBA Game, was released after the Nintendo DS was out, at least in America. They are following a pattern that runs deep, though perhaps they intend to alter the pattern with the addition of the ability to trade between DS and 3DS games.

  11. Calum Nicholson-Walker

They’ll probably do Gray for the DS as the system’s swansong, then a Ruby/Sapphire remake for 3DS to test the waters and see how the main series format of Pokémon games work out on 3DS, before the release of Generation 6 proper.

  12. Well I hope it dose come out. If it was on 3DS that would be great but that is fine if its just on DS.

I hope the story would tell more about the original Dragon the 3 used to be.

  13. http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/blogs/joshawott/why-kyurem-wont-get-new-forme-41323/

“”Kyurem’s unseen power will be revealed” is the first myth I will bust. This is as generic as generic statements get. You want to know why Kyurem’s power is unseen? Because the Pokémon has yet to be seen in the anime yet! It’s just a flashy sentence to help sell a movie, nothing more. As for the “mystery hidden” in Kyurem? I’m putting my money on that being something related to the movie’s story more than anything – such as why Kyurem is battling against the Sacred Swordsmen (or Muskadeers as I like to call them) and its relation to the movie’s story as a whole.”

Also, while Kyurem being the main movie mascot gives support to it being the mascot of the third version, there is NOTHING to indicate which console the third version will be for. After all, “Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition” is for the DS. Also, see this:

    http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/blogs/joshawott/my-theory-pok%C3%A9mon-grey-ruby-sapphire-remakes-generation-vi-39667/

“The Nintendo 3DS was released in Japan 5 months after Black and White; yet a mere 20-odd days after in the rest of the world. As the Nintendo DS is now out-dated, it would be logical to think that the next Pokémon game would be for the Nintendo 3DS right? Wrong! I direct you to Nintendo’s Iwata Asks article about Pokémon Black and White. Now, there are two statements here by Junichi Masuda, the Director of Pokémon Black and White that strike me:

‘Yes. I had always wanted to make a second generation for Nintendo DS. Because the Nintendo DS family of systems has spread around the world to such an amazing degree.’

Now, it could easily be argued that his definition of “generation” may be different to our fan definition and fair enough, I’d accept that. However, this next quote really drills the message in:

‘Yes. Since this generation would be presented on the same system, I was extremely worried that it would turn out to be basically the same as its predecessor. If we tried to make it the same way as normal, I thought the games would turn out to be similar to Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl Versions.’

There we have it. That is why GameFreak will most likely be saving the Nintendo 3DS for the next generation. If they were to move to the new console now, they would only encounter those same problems when it comes to working on Generation VI’s Primary Pair.”

    1. I’d like to point out that Pokemon x Nobunaga’s ambition is developed by Koei and shouldn’t really be used as an example here. Every other Pokemon game coming from Nintendo’s studios recently were for the 3DS, which you clearly haven’t pointed out.

So while you think Gray won’t be on the 3DS – in actuality, they have no reason NOT to do that. It would be a pretty boneheaded business move as well.

      1. I personally think it would more boneheaded to put it on 3ds. I like my 3ds, but take note that Pokemon Black and White made sales records for some of the fastest selling games in history. The Nintendo DS is much easier to obtain and over 100 million people have one vs. only 4 million 3ds consoles. It would be smarter to develop such an extremely popular franchise for the more available console until said console dies out.

  14. in my opinion if this will be in nintendo 3ds hmmm well it will be a bummer for the programmers since many in interviews have seen before you can already tell that they dont like nintendo 3ds and that is for the head programmer and lead designers

i don’t know if someone is familiar on the rom file of the games but based on my last check on it, its highly suggestive that it has enough space for the addition of game data for black and white if they will have a gray version. the presence of the god stone in the game data even though its not obtainable under normal circumstances is indicative that they (gamefreak/nintendo) has already something in-store for the third version of the game and moving to a different platform of programming is very unlikely simply because it will take a lot of time and will cost a lot for the company. another key information that every body should know is the presence of the 1 and 0 value for black city and white forest. these two cities are not actually game specific in the truest sense since if we manipulate the ram of the game you can access one or the other a feature that can be or will be probably present on pokemon gray without ram manipulation

we must all realize that the nintendo 3ds is not really well received by the public, do not be fooled if the sales went up in the last quarter of 2011 why? simply because it went on sale and from a marketeer/spectators perspective it does not translate to profit for nintendo but rather they were trying to salvage what they can from a product that is not a profitable a projected

gamefreak left so much room of speculation for kyurem in contrast to giratina of generation IV. and chances of expanding unova/isshu for the third version of black and white is very likely. and who knows what are the possibilities left for kyurem, keldeo, and melloetta.

what i can just guess is the possibility of the legendaries for generation V to have multiple forms and probably not only the legendaries but even the common pokemon we see in unova/isshu

on a more personal note If pokemon gray will be on 3ds i wont buy it but if it will be on ds for sure ill get one

  15. The Metalhead Next Door

Well, since they made the Pokédex 3D I don’t think it will be a issue for nintendo to make Pokémon Gray on 3DS. Besides, they probably almost finished it…

  16. I’d prefer Ruby/Sapphire remakes for 3DS instead of grey for the regular DS. 3rd gen Pokemon were pretty nice, unlike the 5th gen Pokemon. Not saying Black/White sucked, the games were pretty good. But yeah, I didn’t like the Pokemon, their names, theirs looks. Plus, it’s about time for a “classic” Pokemon game for the 3DS, not something like Rumble or I don’t know what.
Nintendo would make a lot of money if they’d finally decide to release such classic-style Pokemon game for the 3DS.

  17. I love how everyone is saying that gray will be on the DS lol, gamefreak already said that the next main series games will be on the 3DS so you can stop talking and saying “hurr its gonna be on the DS cause black and white were on it” because it wont be on it.

  18. They’re not calling it Grey because of Kyurem’s color. Black + White = Grey. Kyurem is the empty corpse of what Zekrom and Reshiram used to be before they split into two. Zekrom + Reshiram = Kyurem.

The game *could* show a past form of Kyurem before it’s body split into two.

  19. I got a lot of entertainment of people arguing what game system this is going to be on.
Every new gen went on a new generation of Nintendo hand-helds.
Gameboy had the original, Color had second gen, Advance had third, and DS had fourth, then there were other versions of the DS, like DS lite, DSi- 3DS… Which the fifth gen pretty much applies to those. So, the third one could very well be a 3DS game, considering the first two were made ‘normal’ in comparison. Like how Crystal had animation, Grey may very well have a 3D option.

  20. OR, YOU KNOW, THIS COULD JUST BE ABOUT THE FUCKING MOVIE AND NOT INVOLVE A NEW GAME AT ALL.

Christ, the article says it was something ABOUT THE MOVIE. It doesn’t mention a GAME. Anywhere.

  21. I got a question for a few people… how do any of you know it’s a corpse of what Reshiram and Zekrom used to be?
I would like to see some proof before making some sort of a speculation that could really be false in the future.
I’m not saying it’s false, I just want proof before believe something that may not be true.

Also, I hope @sickr would give credit to who drew that picture he posted. I know who did the art and deserves to be mentioned before people say “OMG NEW ARTWORK”…. don’t do what IGN did, @sickr.

    1. im a bit late to respond here so sorry but people think kyurem is the “corpse of the dragon reshiram and zekrom where due to it resemling the 3rd element in budisem i cant spell and don’t feal like looking spellcheck up so deal with it for now not to mention that kyurem shares a name sacke with reshiram and zekrom which is the r*m but a difrent vowels that is why people think kyurem is related there are a few but for more on it you can look at a web site called bulbapedia under kyurem in the trivia near the bottem. i hope any of that helped. in all i like the theory but i don’t think its true. but again did that explain it for you

  22. I think they could easily have ‘Grey’ for the 3DS. All they need to to is do the 3D inversion to the game. They already have the basic out look for the game; and with a bland-graphic game like Pokémon it would be fairly easy to do.
I am not really wanting a game based on getting Kyurem. The getting of Pokémon already in the two previous games is a bit redundant. Unless Game Freak does what most fans want and add in other Generational Pokémon. Which is what they truly need to do.

  23. well um i think Kyurem is not anything close to the other 2 dragons stories because in the game in i read in the town next to the gaint chasm that he crashed there in a huge explosion and at night a mist showed up in town and started taking ppl but it ended idk y but i think hes from space and has nothing to do with the other 2 but i think gray will be focused on how Reshiram and Zekrom will merge to become the dragon they were once were just saying in no negative way just in my point of veiw with facts.

  24. Kyurem looks like an amorphous son Reshiram and Zekrom did, for me it’s like a dumb pokémon, but i prefer it over the “Giant Purple OVNI Bug crap”. Damn i miss the awesome pokémons like Kabutops, my first impression when i saw Trubish was “Seriously!” a rotten trash bag!? Anyway, just saying, have a nice day ^^

  25. Pingback: Rumor | Pokemon Gray llegará al 3DS este año – Revista Gamer Style

  26. In my humble opinion, every Pokemon game in the main series was absolutely amazing. I’m almost 15 years old now so the first game I ever played was Pokemon Sapphire. I was blown away. I honestly could not put my Game Boy down for at least a week. It was, and maybe still is the best generation yet. I played every other game in the third generation onwards and when Generation IV was announced, I was as excited as ever. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. People think that they are the worst games out there, but really in my opinion, Red and Blue were. FireRed and LeafGreen were a little better, but still rather boring. When Generation V was announced, I was even more excited than I was about Generation IV. People say that Generation V was very disappointing. NO! The graphics were amazing, the storyline was fantastic, the selection of Pokemon was astounding the music was beautiful, and I really enjoyed them.

If they do make a Pokemon Gray, and it ends up being for the 3DS, I will buy a 3DS just to play it. They probably won’t, it’s probably still going to be for the DS because otherwise they will break the tradition of every game in a generation being on the same console. Hopefully the rumored Ruby and Sapphire remakes will also be on the DS and then if a Generation VI comes out, it will most probably be for the 3DS. Just saying. But overall I am extremely excited to see what else is in store for Generation V.

  27. Gray Version is possible because if you have Action Reply and select all items or key items you will see a God Stone into the Key item maybe thats the hint about Pokemon Gray version i hope my instinct is true hahaha xD

  28. Why dont they make one where you can travel to all of the regions from all of the games and keep the pokemon you trained from the beggining

  29. This hole thing on Grey is a fake the next game is coming on the Nintendo DS and
    is called…….
    Black 2 and White 2!!!

  30. PLEASE READ! Hey! it’s me again YES the
next 2012 Autumn games are black and white to
but Kyerum’s great secret is the mascot to those games
    BLACK KYERUM=BLACK 2
    WHITE KYERUM=WHITE 2
NORMAL KYERUM= STILL IN WORKING PROGRESS!

    1. not to be rude or anything, but did you try to read the date when this news article was posted? at the time of this article’s writing Nobody knows about Black version 2 and White version 2

  31. Everything is very open with a very clear clarification oof the challenges.

It was truly informative. Your site is extremely helpful.
